Brexit mega thread part 15a - looking forwards

Just rebooting the most recent thread

At the moment the UKs issues are rather over shadowed by events elsewhere
but maybe that is a good thing.

The German election on Sunday is worth watching
Right wing European politicians pulling out of CPAC speeches because they realise its not a good look
Farage floundering to stay relevant

and the possibility of the return of free movement for our kids if not us

Relations between mainland Europe and the UK remain a worthy topic for discussion

Later ILR for information

Ah, so 9/11 was due to Eastern European countries joining the EU.

That's a bit of a stretch even for Global's weird delusions!

DuncinToffee · 29/08/2025 21:28

and Globe is retiring to one of those 'weak' countries

I think it’s called “clutching at straws” Grin

Pharmacists rate Brexit as the biggest issue when it comes to UK medicines supply problems, in a survey of The Pharmacist readers.

I had forgotten about the Downside Dossier.

I note from a quick skim of the upsides that we could now buy champagne in pints. Has this happened?

That was a really good Marillion album on the theme of alcoholism.

Talkinpeace · 01/09/2025 15:12

Globe needs to understand the word "indefinite"

Those of us with ILR never needed to get the visa
because we could carry around our old passports with the ILR in it.

Since I got my UK passport the ILR became irrelevant

@Talkinpeace

Once citizenship is obtained, the ILR has no purpose. Citizens are entitled to work and claim benefits. Those with ILR are not entitled to either.

That your 1984 ILR did not contain the no recourse to public funds does not mean that all ILR issued after that year did not.

@DuncinToffee

Convert the building to house immigrants. The amount not spent on hotels (estimated at £8 million per day) would soon be recovered. Also, it would go towards Starmers target of closing all asylum hotels by the end his term.

It would cost an additional fortune to convert a building intended to checking lorries into something fit for human habitation.

And if you did, and did it half decently, it would be far better deployed to provide low cost housing for individuals and families.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 04/09/2025 13:20

@pointythings

And if you did, and did it half decently, it would be far better deployed to provide low cost housing for individuals and families.

There would be costs to install; sleeping, cooking and sanitation facilities, but that would be recovered quickly when compared to daily cost of £8 million for hotels.

Current government wants to build 1.5 million homes over their term, but remains to be seen.

Globe

Do stop talking utter drivel.

I had full use of the NHS, NHS dentistry, unemployment benefit, housing benefit, student grant, maternity pay, maternity allowance
and worked for many years
all while living here on an ILR.

As do the hundreds of thousands of other people on ILR status.
There are NO restrictions on life or work for those still in possession of one of those old stamps.

Old stamps being the key words. In your case, a 41 year old stamp.

I am talking about more recent stamps such as that issued to my stepdaughter in 2010. She had been in the UK long enough to apply for an ILR, but it included the caveat

“no recourse to public funds”

Five years later, she was able to apply for citizenship.

Same as her mother, but in her case she had to wait three years before she could apply for citizenship as she was married to a UK citizen.

Talkinpeace · 06/09/2025 20:17

Globe

You are not comprehending the vile changes brought in by Theresa May - the Hostile Environment -
which led directly to the Brexit Vote
and the current flags on lamp posts everywhere.

ILR status was very civilised.
Theresa May tried to fully shut it down with her silly ten year visa (£140, no thank you)
that caught people like your stepdaughter.

Those of us with the stamp that said "indefinite" carried on using it regardless.
The two highest profile people to do so were Clive James and Germaine Greer.

Making people unwelcome caused the UK to shoot itself in the foot.

The USA just did the same with the blitheringly stupid ICE raid on the Hyundai factory.

Again, you are referred to:

This lists the top 5 most anti migrant countries in the World in order as:

Austria
Germany
Netherlands
France
Sweden

The common link is that they are all EU members.

I found the article @GlobeTrotter2000 is referring to with the help of google as it is from 2023.

But I do now know that Germany has Europe's fastest supercomputer called Jupiter

How do you know that? Has there been referendums in those countries whether they should remain in the EU?

A question that is not asked can’t be answered.

pointythings · 07/09/2025 16:56

I can't speak for all these countries, but polling for Nexit has been consistently low in the Netherlands, and even Geert Wilders is no longer advocating for it, because he is not entirely thick.
