Just rebooting the most recent thread

At the moment the UKs issues are rather over shadowed by events elsewhere
but maybe that is a good thing.

The German election on Sunday is worth watching
Right wing European politicians pulling out of CPAC speeches because they realise its not a good look
Farage floundering to stay relevant

and the possibility of the return of free movement for our kids if not us

Relations between mainland Europe and the UK remain a worthy topic for discussion

And of course I was not allowed to vote.
I was and am a US Citizen.
I most definitely DID claim benefits while living on ILR in the UK

If you're a US citizen who doesn't live in the UK, what business is it of yours whether the UK is or isn't a member of the EU?

Talkinpeace · 19/08/2025 17:04

Eh ?

Eh ?

Should have thought it was pretty obvious. If you're not from UK, not from the EU and don't live in either location either, why should you expect to have a say on whether the U.K. was a member of the EU or not? and why should I bother engaging with your opinions on the subject?

Talkinpeace · 19/08/2025 18:03

Have the batteries been changed in your AI ?

I have lived in the UK since the 60's and had a UK passport for over ten years.

You really haven't been paying attention, otherwise you would know that you're completely wrong about @Talkinpeace .

MaybeNotBob · 19/08/2025 20:36

Pfft! Facts! You know Brexiteers have more important things, like feelz...

I thought I read earlier that she was a US citizen, in which case I'd presume that she'd have a US passport.

There's this thing called 'dual citizenship', which many countries (sadly not mine) are happy to allow. My kids have dual Dutch/US citizenship (the Netherlands does allow it if it's through birth).

Have you been drinking Globe's drink ???

I was born in New York to an all American family (well since the 1600s)
I moved to the UK in the 60's
I have had dual nationality since 2012 when Theresa May brought in the 'hostile environment'
I lived happily on ILR status - as do many "forriners" for decades

No but I've clearly made a mistake. Sorry, I was working under the mistaken belief that US Nationals couldn't have dual citizenship.

Talkinpeace · 19/08/2025 22:30

Louise,
I have been posting on these threads since 2015
its the worst kept secret on here that I am a dual national.

The US doesn't prevent people holding two passports. I was (briefly) married to an American and after five years as a respectable tax-paying resident alien, I could have applied for US citizenship and kept my UK passport. I rather wish I had now!

It used to.

Until 1990 if I'd wanted UK I'd have had to give up USA
which was not feasible as my father was still there

I made the decision to return to the UK in 1985. And have only been back to visit since then.

Papyrophile · 21/08/2025 21:58

Actually I think the US only recognised US citizenship, but the UK recognised both and didn't object to dual nationality. I know I would have had to file for US taxation if I had pursued the US passport.

Talkinpeace · 21/08/2025 22:00

I was born in New York so I am resigned to always having an eagle passport.
The tax thing is a whole other ball game.

Those great post brexit deals

https://www.ft.com/content/9170d67f-d9a7-4619-8793-f9d8115ac75d?shareType=nongift

An influx of Australian steak into the UK is undercutting domestic beef production, British farmers have warned, as the livestock sector starts to feel the effects of post-Brexit trade deals.

MaybeNotBob · 25/08/2025 12:04

All that winning. How will we cope?

GlobeTrotter2000 · 25/08/2025 17:50

The ILR stamp includes the statement no recourse to public funds, but does not include a full list of what is and what is not public funds.

For information, Germany wants to stop legal aid for failed asylum seekers to speed up deportations. So, they are beginning to realise that such persons are not beneficial to Germany.

Won’t happen in the UK whilst Starmer is PM as he has made his millions from being a human rights lawyer.

Bullshit

(the holes are because its an expired US passport)

You should have left it at 'bullshit'

Talkinpeace · 25/08/2025 18:24

The best bit is that there was never EVER a record of how many of times those stamps were put in passports.

UK Gov never had the foggiest how many of us were here on them.
When Theresa May started the whole "hostile environment shit"
which leads directly to the current flag madness
she estimated around 400,000
to which the US Embassy was able to point out that there were more than that number of registered US voters in the UK at the time !!

The nearest estimate I ever saw that its about 2.5 million ILR holders
and because its "indefinite"
carrying an old passport with one in still works
see Clive James and Germaine Greer refusing to but the £££ 10 year visas

OP posts:
GlobeTrotter2000 · 29/08/2025 15:55

@Talkinpeace

The Visa you have posted is dated 1984, 41 years ago. Today’s ILR is a full page sticker in the passport which includes the statement “no recourse to public funds” as opposed to a stamp on arrival.

Also, comparing 1984 to 2025 is a non starter. The World has changed a lot in the last 41 years.

For example, in 1984 the EEC had 10 members; Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands and United Kingdom. Other than Greece, the members had comparable strength.

Turn the clock forward to 2006 and the destruction began. Weak Eastern European countries became members with nothing to offer other than cheap labour.

The outcome is that the EU is divided into two parts. The haves in the West and the have nots in the East.

Also, events such as attacks on the world trade centre in 2001 highlighted how lax security had become.
