Brexit mega thread part 15a - looking forwards

Just rebooting the most recent thread

At the moment the UKs issues are rather over shadowed by events elsewhere
but maybe that is a good thing.

The German election on Sunday is worth watching
Right wing European politicians pulling out of CPAC speeches because they realise its not a good look
Farage floundering to stay relevant

and the possibility of the return of free movement for our kids if not us

Relations between mainland Europe and the UK remain a worthy topic for discussion

Of course, the other thing about all the Brexiteers wanging on about small boats is that it's because of their precious Brexit that we have so many.

We didn't have them when we were in the EU, because we could send them back to France. So, frankly, they should be shouting at themselves...

LouiseCollins28 · 07/08/2025 18:34

We shall see if that's true (or not) at a future general election.

Had President Trump been President when Brexit actually happened at the end of Jan 2020 then I suspect the trade deal with the USA would have happened a lot sooner than it eventually did.

Why you'd expect Farage to explain his vision for "new ties" when he has never yet been a serious candidate for Prime Minister (and still may well not be) is unfathomable. What was Starmer doing 4 years before the last election, his vision wasn't out there in full, was it?

Why shouldn't Farage explain his vision for 'new ties' - the EU is his obsession so it's reasonable to expect him to have thought about it.

Easier not to though, eh

@DuncinToffee

As per the talking policeman, polls are not relevant. It’s the ballot box that counts.

As for rejoining the EU, how will the rejoin campaigners convince UK exporters that joining a bloc that has higher tariffs imposed upon them by the US will increase their exports?

Not topic related, but three cheers for the Spanish guys on the beach who tackled the boat invaders. Sadly, had that happened in the UK, the attackers would have been arrested and possibly jailed whilst the invaders were taken to their free hotel.

The EU is far away our biggest trading partner, so businesses will need little persuasion.

Talkinpeace · 10/08/2025 16:54

This weekend I have driven up and down the M20.
What a blithering waste of money to close one whole carriageway
to corral lorries returning to Europe and get their paperwork done.

What an even bigger waste of money to have the Inland checkpoint at Sevington
that has sod all lorries in it and no way to check whether they do actually stop there.

Re immigration

Frothing about brown people in boats distracts those with short attention spans
from the millions coming to the UK on the legal route
and the fact that without a steady supply of immigrants
the NHS and care system would utterly collapse

No reason at all why he shouldn't, but to expect him to reveal his party's full programme up to 4 years in advance of a General Election is unrealistic IMO.

MaybeNotBob · 11/08/2025 00:46

HAHAHAHAHA!

The very idea that his private limited company has a "full programme"!

I think you're exactly right tbh, Refore don't have a full programme (nothing like) and if it comes to election time and they still don't that will undermine support for them significantly.

Let's hope so. I'm also hoping that they will use the time between now and the next election showing themselves up as the incompetent grifters they are in the councils they're running into the ground.

LouiseCollins28 · 11/08/2025 11:32

Personally I'm very much hoping not. "Unproven" it the word I'd use at the moment for Reform. To their credit, very few of them have held public office before which, IMO of course, in the current circs automatically makes them preferable to virtually anyone who previously has. We'll see how it pans out over the next 4 years

Who said anything about a full programme?

His entire political career has been based on hostility to the EU. He has admitted that the very Brexit red tape he is responsible for is damaging businesses.

Why is it unreasonable to expect him to set out a few positive ideas for a change?

Talkinpeace · 11/08/2025 15:04

Rupert - those long distance rowers are migrants - Lowe

Nigel - Dulwich College merchant banker with German Kids - Farage

they are an utter joke of a protest vote who rely on FPTP to ensure they never have to come up with the goods

OP posts:
LouiseCollins28 · 11/08/2025 22:53

Well, I guess we'll see around 4 years from now. At the moment, I think it is plausible to predict that the size of that "protest" vote will very large. Of course, it could all implode spectactulary...

MaybeNotBob · 11/08/2025 23:19

But do you honestly want them to win? I would be a f*cking catastrophy for the country!

MaybeNotBob · 11/08/2025 23:19

No, I don't think I do want them to win. I've never voted for Reform UK, nor any of their predecessor "Farage and Co" parties.

On the other hand, it does seem likely that they may be most influential party after the next GE favouring the U.K. being outside the E.U., unless the Conservatives have a radical upturn in fortunes (lol I doubt that).

If the choice is between them and Starmer's Labour who clearly want to take us back into the EU formally or informally and Reform UK, well I'll certainly not be voting for Reform, but I'd want them to do very well.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 12/08/2025 23:33

@MaybeNotBob

Well, d'uh! But we didn't have to worry about those when we were in the EU, so it's down to people like you that we now have to deal with the extra expense and hassle involved. So thanks for that...

I travel in and out of the EU each week. There are no additional hassles and expenses at all. I was subject to biometric checks back in 2006 when I worked in Kazakhstan. Index fingers were placed on a scanner whilst the passport staff looked through the passport and added the entry/exit stamp.

LOOK AT THE BROWN PEOPLE IN BOATS to hide their looting of the treasury. Funnily enough, the owners of the hotels that are putting up the asylum seekers all seem to be Tory donors, or, more recently, Reform donors...

..all seem to be….

Please provide links or evidence that hotels used for asylum/boat arrivals are owned by Tory and Reform donors.

Boat arrivals have increased significantly since Labour took power. Maybe Starmer is looking to create work for human rights lawyer friends?

@hoopyvest

Again, you have forgotten that the TCA compliance requirements and regulations for goods do not apply to services. You also seem to forget that services are over 80% of UK economy and 83% of employment.

MaybeNotBob · 12/08/2025 23:39

At the risk of repeating myself; Well d'uh! The new rules haven't come in to effect yet,

FFS! If you have a brain, please try to engage it...

GlobeTrotter2000 · 12/08/2025 23:53

@LouiseCollins28

Maybe the protest has already begun? There is a petition posted on facebook to demand a general election. Almost 700,000 signatures.

@MaybeNotBob

But do you honestly want them to win? I would be a fcking catastrophy for the country!*

Labour has already been a catastrophe.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 13/08/2025 00:00

@MaybeNotBob

Netherlands has already installed the finger print scanners at the passport kiosks last year. The scan is done simultaneously whilst the passport staff check passports and add stamps. So, there is no added time due to biometric checks.

Even if there was, you would still have to wait at the luggage collection carousel after you have gone through passport control.

MaybeNotBob · 13/08/2025 00:53

Unless you travel with just hand luggage.

You really are getting desperate to "prove" a point that is so obviously wrong.

It's quite pathetic.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 13/08/2025 08:26

@MaybeNotBob

The finger print scan and the passport check (an action which is unavoidable regardless of which passport you have) are done simultaneously. I know this as I done this is several in countries such as Kazakhstan and Iraq.

More recently I have been passing through the Netherlands weekly. Typically there are five open kiosks at passport control. One for crew and diplomats. One for EU/EEA and three, or more depending upon the time of year, for all passports.

The key phrase is “all passports”. There are no kiosks which are UK only and subject to more checks than anyone else which is the impression you are trying to create.

DuncinToffee · 13/08/2025 09:01

Another petition calling for a General Election? 'cause the other ones did well 😅

The Telegraph wants Labour to sort out this latest Brexit bonus of being treated like a third country.

Services you say?

Export growth has been strong but not lived up to its potential'

@GlobeTrotter2000 AI could have provided you the answer

Several companies contracted by the UK government to house asylum seekers in hotels have seen significant profits, with some owners or directors having donated to the Conservative Party

Another small step

🚄 Paving the way for a direct 🇬🇧🇩🇪 rail link was endorsed as part of the Kensington Treaty last month.

Today, German Transport Minister Schnieder & UK Transport Secretary Alexander signed a declaration of intent and established a taskforce to lay the foundations for this link.
