Just rebooting the most recent thread

At the moment the UKs issues are rather over shadowed by events elsewhere
but maybe that is a good thing.

The German election on Sunday is worth watching
Right wing European politicians pulling out of CPAC speeches because they realise its not a good look
Farage floundering to stay relevant

and the possibility of the return of free movement for our kids if not us

Relations between mainland Europe and the UK remain a worthy topic for discussion

And now we can't check if they're criminals because of your idiotic Brexit.

Joined up thinking please!

GlobeTrotter2000 · 28/05/2025 09:32

At BobbyNoMate

Brexit was passed by an act of parliament in March 2017 when 498 MPs voted to leave the EU.

The current parliament has 538 MPs from parties who support Brexit. Remember Starmers statement that there will be no return to the customs union or single market.

Regards immigration, UK comes fifth after, Germany, France, Spain and Italy.

So, regardless of legislation, I can’t see any country who has a bigger immigration problem than the UK agreeing to take more by returns from the UK.

MaybeNotBob · 28/05/2025 10:21

More word salad, completely failing to address the point.

Just as we've come to expect from GlobalNoMates...

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has urged the government to strike a deeper trade deal with the European Union to improve growth and “minimize negative effects” of Brexit.

@DuncinToffee

Is this the same treasury that forecast

500-800K jobs would be lost just by a vote to leave in 2016?
4% drop in GDP by July 2018

if you look back at one of the links you provided in the past, it recorded that every forecast of disaster made by remain never happened.

On QT last night, Labour announced that UK was the fasted growing economy in G7.

If you believe polls, Farage has increased his lead over Labour.

DuncinToffee · 30/05/2025 09:06

Ah yes, I forgot, the sky didn't fall in 2018, all is well. Never mind the 5% loss in GDP.

Your mate Nige needs you, he has got a bridge to sell.

MaybeNotBob · 30/05/2025 09:57

I wonder what could have happened...

SerendipityJane · 30/05/2025 11:57

I think this thread (and indeed board) are highlighting the potential risk that instead of continuing to look forwards, people who opposed Brexit get dragged into all sorts of useless arguments about 2016-2020.

As Brexiteers mentioned, once. "we lost, get over it".

With Brexit firmly delivered and as shit as was expected, it's time to move on with the country, and leave Brexit behind. Just like Nigel Farage has.

We've had Brexit. Not only was it shit, but it blew the Tory party out of power and now out of history.

The UKs relationship with the EU is only going to advance, and as such "Brexit" - the notion of leaving the EU is moot.

So in the spirit of not being part of the problem, this is my sign off to this thread, and this board. I'll leave it to the defenders of Brexit to exchange wistful memories of the glory days when nothing had happened and they still had their dreams.

Goodnight and good luck. 🙏

Ah @SerendipityJane no! The more sensible people go silent the more everyone else gets exposed to lies and disinformation. The point of these threads is not to 'win' the arguments with those who defend Brexit. They always will. It's to keep providing counter-arguments and engaging in the conversation for the benefit of every lurker who's interested in a balanced debate. As you say, it's about the future and how we can boost our growth and safeguard our rule of law.
It's the same on any thread and discussion forum discussing the situation in the US. There's a lot of despair and the temptation to switch off from that tsunami of shit is very strong indeed - but that's not how reason will prevail. We really cannot let the MAGA cult & its local variants such as Reform or the guy who's just won in Poland win every time (what I call the remote-controlled populist international syndication).

LouiseCollins28 · 02/06/2025 13:23

The idea that you think this thread is balanced is hilarious. It's at the very least 80/20 against Brexit.

You're not engaging in a coversation either. Just about every post I make attracts the same, tired, insults. You want a conversation? Good, maybe start by engaging meaningfully with people who don't think like you do. Here's a hint, implying that "reason" only coalesces around the side of an argument which you support, but not it's counter, isn't a sound basis for a debate of any kind.

DuncinToffee · 02/06/2025 13:29

You won Louise, why not enjoy your victory?

Meanwhile the reset is betraying people by making fruit and veg cheaper

pointythings · 02/06/2025 13:39

@louisecollins28 the problem is that it is very difficult to debate rationally with a position that is fundamentally irrational. When people are wilfully supporting economic decline, increased poverty, reductions in working rights and environmental protections, increases in barriers to trade, finding common ground is difficult. The idea that replacing one law with another, which is absolutely identical but for its nation of origin is a good use of legislative time and effort is so off the wall that agreement becomes impossible.

Brexit is like religion: If you can't take the leap of faith and believe, it's an alien and alienating concept.

LouiseCollins28 · 02/06/2025 13:45

"Brexit is like religion: If you can't take the leap of faith and believe, it's an alien and alienating concept."

Since you assert this, you might also acknowledge that it's counter is equallly valid. The EU is an alien and alienating concept, to those who don't believe in it.

Do you acknowledge that?
