With the Windsor framework up & running, and the DUP having a "you could set your calendar by it" hissy fit, but Irish unification refusing to keep it's head down, what next in the long running sage of UK vs. the real world ?

The only thing worth taking from Globetrotters post is to ask how Brexit has not been delivered. If the UK is going to remain outside the EU, then it must have been.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 11/07/2024 12:51

@SerendipityJane

The Netherlands has had a similar system in place since 1960s. Foreigners can claim 30% tax relief on their earnings.

"Not that kind of Brexit"

@Peregrina

If you look on the Labour manifesto it reads:

With Labour, Britain will stay outside of the EU. But to seize the opportunities ahead, we must make Brexit work.

Brexit has been prevented from achieving it's potential for reasons such as:

2015
Cameron never wanted it. Hence no plan for a Leave vote.

2015-2019
T May never wanted it. Her deal was pay to remain until the end of time.

Liam Fox was tasked with seeking out new deals even though he was one of the MPs who voted against trigger of Article 50 in March 2017.

2020-2022
COVID took hold of the World. Governments around the World prioritized protection of their citizens and spent vast fortunes on; furlough payments and vaccinations. Talk about trade deals was not a priority for anyone at this time.

2022 to date
Conflicts in the World caused energy prices to rocket. So, governments are faced with tackling the cost of living crisis as priority.

Peregrina · 11/07/2024 13:53

Only thing worth picking up from Globetrotter's last post:

Governments around the World prioritized protection of their citizens and spent vast fortunes on; furlough payments and vaccinations.

No, Johnson's Government prioritised help to their mates - VIP PPE lanes to enrich their mates, eat out to help the virus, f* all help for the self employed.
Vaccinations - granted, delivered by dedicated NHS staff.

prettybird · 11/07/2024 14:22

Wonderful use of language by the Conservatives at the time to obfuscate who was responsible for what....

"NHS Test and Trace": not delivered by the NHS in England ConfusedShock but instead instead sub-contracted inefficiently to the private sector to enrich their cronies (NB: Scotland's "Test and Protect" was kept within the NHS, as were the other devolved nation's NHS Public Health structures).

"COVID-19 Vaccination Programme": delivered efficiently by the NHS. Hmm

Just think what that £1.9 billion could have bought
https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/23589801.mountain-dumped-ppe-packs-discovered-new-forest-farm/
but no, we had a bunch of politicians who were self serving
and decried experts

And their AI bots carry on the good work

VimtoVimto · 11/07/2024 20:10

Did Farage have any constructive plans to replace the various EU systems that were no longer relevant after Brexit or is his influence just destructive.

Talkinpeace · 11/07/2024 20:26

"Farridge" "constructive"

does not compute

Peregrina · 11/07/2024 22:07

Most MPs at the return to Parliament made constructive speeches. Not Farridge - he slagged off Bercow. Despite the fact that Johnson delivered Brexit.

Talkinpeace · 11/07/2024 22:19

FWIW I always call him Farridge
its the English pronunciation of his name
and I gather he hates it

prettybird · 11/07/2024 22:27

I prefer Garbage - a good reflection of his strategy thoughts approach plans rubbish Grin

HannibalHeyes · 11/07/2024 22:30

Fartage, because he hangs around like a bad smell...

All going swimmingly here then! 😂

Lets see how Reform get on when they've actually got some work to do representing people.

Similarly, let's see how Labour do now they've got the "to govern is to choose" problems.

On Brexit Labour seemed to get away with saying very little. Again let's see how their record in government stacks up in due time. You'll be unsurprised to learn I'm not hopeful

Labour have made a damn good start:

  • Ditched the Rwanda plan
  • Opened up discussions with the EU on better collaboration around defence, trade and security
  • Got stuck into the issue of prison overcrowding
  • Started taking on the water companies.
Not bad for 7 days in. I'm feeling a lot more hopeful than you.
Peregrina · 12/07/2024 18:15

I agree pointythings - you can add:
started talking to Metro mayors to work with them;
started talking to the Junior doctors to settle their dispute which wasn't just about money.

(I saw from another thread people complaining that newish doctor offspring - about 3 years post qualification, can't get posts, and many are thinking of emigrating. This is madness.)

What have the Tories done since 2019? Siphoned off taxpayers' money, i.e. our money, to their mates, and then squabbled among themselves. They deserved to get the boot.

I think we are probably in agreement about Reform. I hope that when the public see how little they bother to do that they give them the boot also.

SerendipityJane · 12/07/2024 20:59

I believe I may have hit upon a way to shut Brexiteers up.

Finally.

Just adopt a firm position that Brexit is done. The will of the people has been delivered.

That's it.

They very quickly realise that to argue against is to effectively validate the remainer accusation they had no idea what Brexit would look like.

Of course if they aren't happy, they can press for a referendum ...

OP posts:
GlobeTrotter2000 · 13/07/2024 09:50

@SerendipityJane

Article 50 prevented any discussion on trade deals until after the UK had left the EU 31 December 2020. This was confirmed by the Irish MEP, Mairead McGuinness, on the 4 April 2019 episode of Question Time.

Therefore, at the time of the referendum 23 June 2016 it was not possible to know what trade deals would happen.

If remainers don’t like Brexit, why don’t they leave the UK?

Spandauer · 13/07/2024 09:55

If remainers don’t like Brexit, why don’t they leave the UK?

🙄 so stupid I had to comment. (That's it - no further engagement)

IItisymoi · 13/07/2024 09:58

Which the Remain voters effectively KNEW before the referendum because they were not taken in by the LIES of the leave campaign.
I DID leave the UK but not because of Brexit.

DuncinToffee · 13/07/2024 10:01

But they were going to be the easiest trade deals ever!

As for

If remainers don’t like Brexit, why don’t they leave the UK?

Grow up Globe 🙄

pointythings · 13/07/2024 10:06

How original, never heard that one before... Come on, Globe - you can do a tiny bit better than that.
