With the Windsor framework up & running, and the DUP having a "you could set your calendar by it" hissy fit, but Irish unification refusing to keep it's head down, what next in the long running sage of UK vs. the real world ?

Further to the thread, it would appear that Ciotti has now lost control of the Les Républicains Twitter account: his tweet saying he was still president has been deleted and the account has been retweeting a load of posts talking about being grateful for their (new) interim leadership and the dangers of allying with Le Pen/the RN.

Dear Globe
Give over
Clavinova did your job better long ago
we are bored of you

Peregrina · 14/06/2024 09:23

For those who miss Clavinova, do go over to the Rishi Sunak and Sky thread, where she is batting hard for him. I think she's given up on Brexit - I assume she's happy with it.

MaybeNotBob · 14/06/2024 12:15

She's been given different orders.

We're left with the junior...

GlobeTrotter2000 · 14/06/2024 12:22

Is Frexit on the cards?

SerendipityJane · 14/06/2024 12:24

Betteridges law applies (as always).

@Talkinpeace

I suggest you watch the ITV Election Debate 2024 broadcast 13 June 2024. The following parties said they would not be campaigning to rejoin the EU:

Conservative
Greens
Labour
Reform

Polls, if you trust them, suggest the above parties will win 87% of the vote.

The seven parties represented were asked a direct question:

“raise your hands if you think the level of net legal migration to the UK needs to fall”

The following parties raised their hands:

Conservatives
Labour
LibDems
Reform

Polls, if you trust them, suggest the above parties will win 88% of the vote.

Surely not being in line with Europe is a benefit of brexit, and should be celebrated?

prettybird · 16/06/2024 11:59

Forgive me for being naive, but didn't those price differentials exist before Brexit Confused

Could it possibly be that we were able to set our own excise duties even then, because, Sovereignty and all that? Hmm

GlobeTrotter2000 · 16/06/2024 13:11

Duties on alcohol and tobacco have always been higher in the UK than in the EU. Goes back to the Thatcher policy of taxing what people spent as opposed to what they earned. Higher taxes on non essential luxuries is better than taxes on income and essentials.

Globe sweetie
I used to work in Dover docks
I processed hundreds of lorry movements a day
and checked T2 and C16 and C88 forms
I've seen more demurrage bills than you have had hot dinners

DO NOT tell me how UK import duties work

prettybird · 16/06/2024 20:51

@Talkinpeace - if you don't read his posts, they can't annoy you Wink

From what I can judge by the responses to him, they add nothing but word salad to the discussion, so why waste the time? Confused

Talkinpeace · 16/06/2024 21:01

Tee hee
I tend to observe their presence rather than making any effort to read !

GlobeTrotter2000 · 17/06/2024 12:10

@Talkinpeace

Talkin about duties added to alcohol and tobacco produced in the UK and sold domestically, not imports. The ones that are usually increased when there is a budget.

I've seen more demurrage bills than you have had hot dinners

George best saw more alcohol than most people in the World, but never made it to 60.

@prettybird

I stopped reading your posts after you posted:

Ireland is a net contributor. Impossible of course as the amount Ireland has returned to the EU is nowhere near the amount they had been given for free by the EU.

The 2016 EU referendum should stated that if one of the four members of the UK voted to remain, then the result shall be declared remain regardless of a majority vote to leave. ie, the 440,000 remain votes in NI shall take priority over the 17.4 million leave votes.

For someone who claims to have studied economics, both statements are a pile.

PS

Don't cry too much when Labour win on 4 July 2024 with a massive majority even though Labour policy is not to rejoin the; EU, customs union or single market.

borntobequiet · 17/06/2024 16:21

I can’t imagine that anyone who has followed and posted on these very well informed threads since before the referendum thinks that any campaign to rejoin the EU would be likely to be successful. For a start, the EU wouldn’t want us. We have persistently negotiated in bad faith and have an unfortunate habit of breaking international treaties.

It’s rather amusing that some posters, who have little understanding of the issues and are only able to regurgitate the same tired arguments over and over again, garnished with irrelevancies, don’t realise how silly they seem.

It does not surprise me, the only thing it misses off is the death rates between the two 😎

For a bit of pre election geekery
I admit that the Julian Desmond and Chris show is much much lower down the list than I expected
north Lincolnshire is where its at !

Latest BBC poll tracker is

General election 2024 poll tracker: How do the parties compare? (bbc.com)

If accurate (doubtful), 84% of the vote is forecast to go to parties whose policy is not to rejoin the; EU, customs union or single market.

@borntobequiet

that any campaign to rejoin the EU would be likely to be successful

I agree. The main parties are aware of that. Hence their policy is not to rejoin.

For a start, the EU wouldn’t want us

Agree. The main objectors would be:

France and Germany as it would be the same as saying the EU would be better off if UK was a member. National pride will not allow France and Germany to make that admission.

Spain will want Gibraltar and rent to be back dated

We have persistently negotiated in bad faith and have an unfortunate habit of breaking international treaties

If you are doubtful about the BBC Poll accuracy, plenty of other polls to choose from.

Spoiler, they are roughly the same
