(previous thread)

That's "king" as a suffix not a prefix. Also part of a phrase.

But again - how many farms did we all drive past with massive great posters telling us "no deal, no problem" and the likes. It is definitely a case of FAFO...

Yup, over half of them voted for it according to all of the stats afterwards, not that they'd admit it now it hasn't worked in their favour of course. I do wonder how much of the rest of the country would magically have voted remain now we can see what has happened to our rivers, seas, trade, economy, global standing and food.

Bit more on food post Brexit which seems to cover the famers and cheaper imports
https://kentandsurreybylines.co.uk/business/food-farming-fishing/fairness-for-farmers-dealing-with-the-damage-of-brexit/

Stories like that in the Express need to have people commenting underneath

"Good ! This is exactly the Brexit I voted for. Thank goodness we have the Express to highlight the good news the craven BBC will only disparage"

I find "disparage" a really good word to use in Express comments. I suspect they have trained their modbots to allow anything that could be "farage" past.

But if the UK diverges from NI on VAT, the screams from the DUP will shatter every window in Westminster, so they can't.

Is this the same DUP that have backed Brexit every step of the way ?

Who would have though that putting shit in a sandwich would result in a shit sandwich ?

Their slow fade into irrelevance is a parable for our times. Their wishful thinking not only won't prevent a unified Ireland. It will ensure they will never be able to speak up for the unionist population as it happens.

I smiled ruefully to myself reading about the VAT. What was that about "Take back control"

I thought the farming article was very balanced too. Regardless of how Catt voted, the Australia/NZ deal was particularly bad because of Johnson and co, and their shit negotiating. As Catt said, when British farmers are driven out of business, what will happen to prices? Even now, poorer people will have to buy the stuff - the MPs and Lords won't be fed on that.

Are they relevant any more though, enough for Westminster to care? I know Brexit hinged on them but since then...

So much needs to change with Ireland. They've really kicked that can down the road for Labour too.

I'm so depressed at the state of the UK - the hospitals, the food, our countryside and most of all the distrust in each other. I honestly still feel the rage about Brexit and boycott Dyson etc even now. I struggle to hear how badly the farmers feel they've been treated, despite knowing I would usually want to support them, because of their behaviour in the referendum and lack of action since. It makes me so angry when locals do nothing about sewage being put into the seas and rivers as a result of the referendum. Do they not see it?

The ERG seem to be particularly dense. David Jones, their deputy chair opines:
“The £5,000 increase is welcome but really colleagues were talking in terms of doubling the threshold. If it can’t be done because of the arrangements with the EU, then really the government ought to go back and start talking to the EU about it.”

Sorry, chum. Don't you realise that the UK had a privileged seat at the EU and could have easily talked about this issue with the the rest? But you and your pals threw that away. Furthermore, you did it with as much belligerence as possible.

Why on earth should the EU now want to come and sit at the table and negotiate with you, unless it's to their advantage?

SerendipityJane · 07/03/2024 10:48

The DUP have written themselves into oblivion. Their actions have created a demographic push for change that will see unification as a possible way forwards, with their entrenched position no help to the future.

The fact they ignored all the warnings should serve as a stark lesson to how far dogma can take you in the political world.

There are other unionist parties who are much better placed to handle a shift to a united island. Especially when it seems the population are becoming much more "meh" about it, and less binary.

As always the devil is in the detail.

Meanwhile, long term trekkie fans of woo are lapping it up ...

ERGium - used to start stellar reactions.

Wasn't there some twerp a few weeks back saying that because the UK was following EU regulations it should have a say in them ?

You do wonder if when they switched on the LHC, did we slip into an alternative reality ? It would explain a lot.

The state of the UK's roads is an embarrassment.
Cancel the stonehenge tunnel and fix the blerdy potholes

Ah, more "taking back control" news;

The Tories have very quietly rowed back another small Brexit change, namely the rules applicable to the certification of safety equipment.

Why? Because they had to admit EU firms weren't willing to go through separate certification just for the UK...

(Notice the article is a touch disingenuous. The UK can have whatever rate it likes. But NIs is bound up with the Windsor framework.)

Notice it's an SI, so no need for parliament to get involved.

Probably the best way to undo Brexit. By the time Brexiteers have found someone to explain it and translate any big words, it's a done deal.

It never ceases to amaze how once all of the rich white men screw everything up they turn to a woman to pick up the pieces (see May) and completely fade away. I see Farage on the advert for the C4 prog about Boris saying something like "He had the world at his feet and he screwed it up" - without the slightest shame that he actually set him up to fail. I mean, Boris went willingly thinking he could control it but still, the egos!

And what do we think Canada will make of this response? If they needed any further clues we are on the back foot, someone standing up and saying they are not trustworthy and that is why no deal was done, must be quite a turn off.

Oh. Dear.

I had no idea the infiltration of the Tories and their poodle press had worked so well. But coupled with their inherent arrogance and dimness, someone has played a blinder here.

Telling the nation how rich Brexit is making your mates (because the person in the street can't see a penny of it) is probably the best policy for a Labour victory on a narrative of "we'll make Brexit work for you" there is.

Has no one at CCHQ stopped to think why every single one of their "initiatives" theses past few months has resulted in the Tory vote dropping more ? They really need to stop using ChatGPT. It can't be trusted.

brexit means brexit Theresa May is stepping down

Talkinpeace · 08/03/2024 16:41

Theresa May created the "hostile environment"
and the "immigrant go home vans"
that caused the xenophobia that drove the Brexit result.

I will never EVER forgive her for that.

fabio12 · 08/03/2024 20:27

I do agree, she was a prime turd, but she did get us the best deal for Brexit which I still think she deserves some credit for. Not that Boris took it because : EGO.

Yes, I know, there was no way it was ever going to be good, but compared to what Boris got...She was much better at negotiating. I don't want to not give her credit for that at least. I can't say anything else nice about her though.
