I'm sure all those Brexshitteers struggling to pay their mortgages are still absolutely delighted though. As they kept telling us, it's not all about money...

I suspect the intersection between "people with mortgages" and "rabid brexiteers" is very low.

Which is another pernicious legacy of this disaster. It will continue to feed resentment between factions for decades to come.

At the time it was so clear that Brexit would be economically a disaster. But ‘Project Fear’ and the unsexy reality of an economic argument just didn’t seem important against the mythical allure of ‘taking back control’. Until, suddenly, struggling to pay a mortgage does become important.

I’ve never understood Farage’s motivation. But I completely despise Johnson. Pushing a Brexit he never really believed in, he’s left this country a mess. And would willingly take it down further to feed his monstrous and insatiable ego.

Depends what you mean by "rabid brexiteers" I suppose.

It feels often on these threads that every leave voter is in that group and if that's so the number of them is so huge that I'm very confident a significant portion will have every type of housing tenure there is.

So, Private rented; Rented from LA/Housing Assoc; have a Mortgage; Own outright. I'd have thought the intersection between "people with mortages" and "voted to leave" is large. Maybe more of them voted to remain, sure someone has run some numbers on it.

A rabid Brexiteer ? The sort of person that has to ask what a rabid Brexiteer is, I guess. Find a mirror.

And it's not just people with mortgages who will have reason to despise their fellow voters. Anyone whose job has gone because the employer they worked for can't export to what was their biggest market will probably think ill of them too. As will the yet to reach the age of 18 kids who start asking "why can't I go round Europe for a year like big brother/cousin/uncle/mum/dad did ?

mirages08 · 17/06/2023 19:45

My sympathy knows no beginning...

The only crumb of comfort I have is that some tories/truss supporters will be suffering too

Historically, tory voters have been insulated against the consequences of their vote. Only the poor and vulnerable suffered.

Once brexshitters realise the true extent of the lies peddled vote leave I imagine they will become rather angry...I forsee a mass exodus to the US of the vote leave architects...

Farage is already distancing himself from brexshit "you did it wrong "

Except there was never any plan ever

Despite decades of campaigning

It's almost as if it wasn't about leaving the EU at all....

Probably not very low, but given the age breakdown, people who've already paid off their mortgages and who live in social housing are liable to be overrepresented compared to the general population.

quiteathome · 18/06/2023 08:50

A lot of people I know who were Brexit voters were the older paid off their mortgage demographic who said along the lines of the following 'oh it will be tough, but we will have been through tough times before like the war.' (that they were not even born in) 'abd we had 15 per cent interest rates but we scrimped and we managed'

Blah blah.

Anyway seems like by taking back control we have completely lost control.

DrBlackbird · 18/06/2023 09:35

Okay so not directly Brexit related, but indicative of Johnson’s duplicitous and narcissistic nature. Just watching LK programme and seeing the video clip of the party at no 10 (one of them anyways) with, what appears to be, Charlotte Owen dancing and I feel annoyed all over again.

There must have been something that went on between him and this women. Why the hell else would a junior Spad be worthy of being made a baroness / life peer aged 29? It’s a page right out of Henry VIII. Shame on the appointment committee for not rejecting it.

Right, I’ll stop gossiping but it really pisses me off that this rule breaking nobody was made a life peer because Johnson fancied her. At least, I can’t see any other explanation but hey, who knows, maybe she was giving him some vitally important technology lessons?

Charlotte Owen: The intern who became a Baroness in 6 years

She was just 23 when she became an intern in Boris Johnson's office. At 29 she will become the youngest ever life peer.

When the Beatles were awarded MBEs, some people allegedly returned their honours in disgust.

I don't really see why I need to respect anyone with an honour now, as it's clearly a corrupt system and they are wearing it's badge.

So that's the laws of the country that I don't need to respect, and people with honours. Obviously Tory party members.

Way to go Boris. And Dom. This is starting to look like the destruction of the Tory party he has made his lifes work.

DrBlackbird · 18/06/2023 10:21

it's clearly a corrupt system

Simon Schama bringing up the ‘dreaded B word’ as a reason for rising interest rates and soaring mortgage rates as the ‘mastodon’ in the room. Only to have all those failed and failing British businesses be easily, casually and oh so indifferently dismissed by Samuel Kasumu as ‘we’ve left, so we have to move on’. But I liked Schama’s response: that ‘moving on’ requires admitting the truth of the mistake. Quite impressed with Schama here banging on about how ‘democracy depends on the acceptance of truth’.

Wasn't Hesletine's greatest fan when he was in government, but I had a certain amount of respect for him (unlike any of the current lot), and he does speak basic common sense about Brexshit.

Brexit has failed - we must now return to the centre of Europe, Lord Heseltine says

You mean you weren't a Heseltinie ?

I was happy to see Tory party activists quoted by the BBC saying: "What we need is Boris Johnson to go away. And most people want Covid and Brexit to go away. He represents both of those."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-65938334

Yes. If Tories have a new Johnsonian Toryism scapegoat that will allow them to Uturn on their previous support for Brexit then that is completely fine with me.

When it comes to Boris Johnson, Tory activists form three distinct groups, writes Laura Kuenssberg.

He does! Obviously he very successfully associated himself with Brexit and that was intentional. Plus because of Partygate, he's subsequently managed to make himself the focus of a lot of grief and anger people feel about the pandemic generally. Hence he's fucked.

The FT again not mincing words.

Can't see the FT article (Paywall)
From the Hesteltine article clearly the pro-EU forces in Parliament continue to agitate for a return to captivity as they've done ceaslessly since 2016.

FrankieStein403 · 20/06/2023 09:40

pro-EU forces in Parliament continue to agitate for a return to captivity sanity.

Fixed that for you.

DrBlackbird · 20/06/2023 11:19

for a return to captivity

See, it’s comments like this that indicates a lack of understanding about international trade. And several years into leaving the single market, anyone who reads the news really ought to know better / more. Leads me to despair.

On the plus side, it was heartening that a parliamentary majority did the right thing in endorsing the privileges committee report on Johnson’s mendacity.
