Me either such joyous beautiful sunlit uplands, albeit with filthy water.

I don't think I can take all this winning...

It's only pity that prevents the rest of the world from standing on their coastlines, making an L on their foreheads and chanting "LOSERRRR" in the general direction of Blighty.

PokeyLaFarge · 28/10/2023 17:52

Long time lurker here

I went to a talk by Anand Menon last week.

Very interesting, and he pretty much said what I've been thinking for some time.

But, fuck me, I hope we are wrong :(

He's only saying that now because he's worried about the possibility of an Irish reunification vote winning now more likely because of the Brexit clusterfuck . Hmm

He's also implicitly encouraging hardliners in NI to refuse to accept the idea that a vote to reunify is a vote to reunify is a vote to reunify, end of.

They have now been given carte blanche to argue that a majority of all constituencies must vote for reunification, or a majority of 75% (or whatever) province-wide must vote for it. You would think someone would have looked over irresponsible bilge like this before it was spoken in public and told this loose cannon that he should bin it.

And there's always the implicit acceptance of 'trouble' in NI from people who don't want to accept reality. This is what led to the division of Ireland in the first place, then to the Troubles.

"since we left the EU and lost membership of the European Investment Bank, comparable investment has been running at only a third of previous levels under the substitute lending institutions set up by Brexit Britain, and a mere eighth in the case of infrastructure projects."

Taxation is not a ‘burden’. It’s Brexit that weighs Britain down | William Keegan

Taxes spent wisely improve lives and attract investors – and in fact leaving the EU has made cutting them harder than ever

'Words people used to describe Britain in 2023 included: broken, mess, expensive, struggling, disaster, poor, divided, shambles and corrupt.' Nothing in Britain works anymore, say overwhelming majority of Red Wall voters:

God this is so true, and it's got even worse since May!

I'm sorry but I have absolutely zero sympathy for red wall voters who voted Brexit and Tory and are now whinging. They got what they voted for.

Jason118 · 03/11/2023 16:40

To be fair, they didn't get what some of them voted for, levelling up (whatever that was supposed to be) was a carrot but all they got was the stick.

verdantverdure · 03/11/2023 17:40

It certainly hasn't improved @CherryMyBrandy

wildfirewonder · 03/11/2023 18:37

So enraging watching them wind back the stupid things they did! But it is the right decision to encourage more school trips to visit, of course.

I wish just once the Brexity bastards would say sorry.

Peregrina · 03/11/2023 20:33

Yes, it's the right thing but it won't help those businesses which have already gone under because they depended on school trips.

But where are the Brexiters to tell us that we don't need school parties from the EU - we must reach out to China? (Well except that even they know that week long trips from Chinese school children are a stupid idea.)

A journey of a thousand miles and all that ...

From memory, Louise has already stated that there are no circumstances - foreseen or unforeseen - in which they would change their mind. For them Brexit is an article of faith, as much as papal infallibility for Catholics, and the belief in the healing power of cake for Anglicans. Much as they slide the word "democrat" into discourse, it's more an aspiration than a definition.

Having just read through this entire thread including all of Louise's "arguments" I think you've hit the nail in the head there! Phrases related to buttons and slices keep popping into my head. Not sure why 🤔

I see Starmer has been - quite rightly - slapped down by the EU over trying to float a hippo over "renegotiating" Brexit.

Keir Starmer says he would negotiate new Brexit deal (telegraph.co.uk)

Weird innit ? When the EU similarly slapped down Rishis puff about it, the reporting was reversed and suggested that they would roll over and lap it up.

However, this siren reporting so early on really serves to show that if Labour can't renegotiate Brexit, then neither can the Tories. We may as well try and "renegotiate" the treaty of Paris.

It's reported by the Telegraph who are in Tories beds. They are complicit in tidying truths and lies

The TCA deal will be revised in 2025, so what Kier is saying is true.

It was written into the Brexit deal that it would be looked at again in 2025

The little snag being the UK hasn't really implemented the first bit to start with.

And so it continues...

The Canadian farm lobby’s campaign to force Britain to lower food standards has added leverage.

The temporary “rollover” agreement agreed after Brexshit which allows British cheese exports expires on 31 December 2023, and the two sides are locked in negotiations to agree a permanent replacement UK-Canada trade deal.

But negotiations have stumbled over issues including whether the UK will accept hormone treated beef.

UK government either has to throw food standards, public health, and the British cattle industry under the bus, or the British cheese industry, or hope the temporary agreement can be extended to kick the decision down the road.

Might be a good time to learn to like venison (like I did 35 years ago).
