It essentially depends on what you want.

If the focus is on getting workers here, charging more upfront in fees and surcharge makes us less attractive, particularly to those with other options. If on the other hand the priority is minimising the risk that any temporary worker costs the NHS more than they put in, charging more makes that less likely. It really depends what the priority is.

We do already exempt some categories of working visa from the NHS surcharge, so precedent for this kind of balancing exercise exists. Whether it's actually been engaged in as part of the decision to increase costs to the chargeable across the board is another question altogether.

Brexiteers want to have their cake and eat it. Nothing has changed there.

That's a given.

Do you know what Louise? Yes, I do expect the NHS to use my taxes to treat anyone that turns up needing treatment. Even if they turn out to be gasp forriners!

Taxes are the most efficient way of funding the NHS, and I personally am proud that the NHS doesn't check passports before treating those in need.

This selfish "I'm alright Jack" attitude seems to be particularly prominent among Brexshitteers. They know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

SerendipityJane · 26/07/2023 10:51

I pay my taxes. They buy me civilisation.

When people fetishize low taxes to the point of celebrating cruelty, they can Fuck ... Right ... Off. And if anyone wants to take that as a personal insult, then they can. If the cap fits wear it. Only wear it with pride and remember what it says about you.

HanannibalHayes and SerediptyJane appear to be pushing back at me for making an argument I'm not making.

  1. Hanibal, I agree, the NHS should treat whoever needs treatment, whether they are citizens, residents or just here on their hols.

  2. Jane. I haven't mentioned lowering taxes, far less fetishising of same.
ATM I don't think it is remotely realistic for taxes to fall, nor would it be desirable even if it were possible. We have COVID to pay for.

However, the NHS is exactly that, a National Health Service. It's paid for by all of us so all of us can use it when we need it. People arriving should expect to make some sort of financial contribution if they want to use it... Oherwise it's an International Health Service, paid for by UK taxpayers but available for free to anyone with the means to travel here. You might want that, I don't and I don't think saying so adds up to "celebrating cruelty"

HannibalHeyes · 27/07/2023 16:54

People arriving should expect to make some sort of financial contribution if they want to use it...

If they come here and work, as most of them would like to, then they will be contributing financially. QED.

In much the same way as I'd prefer not to have to be charged should I fall ill in another country, but unfortunately that's not always possible.

The miniscule number of people travelling here just for healthcare can be treated, as far as I'm concerned, because it was calculated that the amount it cost to do these checks and track these people down was far more than the cost of just treating them. I'd rather the money was spent on healthcare to the benefit of all of us, rather than on the health police. Particularly Braverman's health police...

If anyone can find a smaller one, I'm in the market ...

You really wonder about the critical thinking skills of some people

DuncinToffee · 28/07/2023 19:23

Yep another one who didn't realse FOM is a 2 way system. Confused

Peregrina · 28/07/2023 19:43

I could only read part of the above link. 'Never given the correct information' he moans. Oh yes you were, but Leavers chose to dismiss it as Project Fear and to call us Remoaners. Admittedly, Farage prior to the Referendum was extolling Norway as an example and Hannan decreed that 'No one was talking of Leaving the single market', so we could have had Brexit lite. But we then had May trying to appease the Brexiters and then Johnson came along.

HannibalHeyes · 29/07/2023 13:30

(As long as they're not forrin turnips)

SerendipityJane · 29/07/2023 14:43

Someone at work remembered their father bringing loads of stuff back from Italy every month in the early 70s.

Brexshit causes the end of London to Paris cycling event.

We can't stop winning...

Ah well, forriners will be cycling, and they might wear out a few millimetres (oh sorry, should I say fractions-of-an-inch?) of tarmac, and we can't have that unless they Pay Up Front lest they cost Brexshiteers even a fraction-of-a-penny... therefore it's better they don't come!

(Am I channelling the Brexshit argument correctly?)

HannibalHeyes · 29/07/2023 23:18

Yes, I think you've got that about right. It's very difficult to have to think about minimal negative results and ignore plentiful positive effects. I'm really not sure how they have the discipline to do it, given that they have absolutely no discipline in their general thought processes...

HannibalHeyes · 29/07/2023 23:21

And in "oh, is this the consequence of my own actions" news along with a load of shit about Meghan Markle ...

We just win at every opportunity

I would vote for any party that would be brave enough to say we need to look at returning to the EU.

Jackydaytona · 30/07/2023 19:38

Interesting post on another thread:

"See my proposal earlier in the thread about a Brexit tax. They said that it was "worth being poorer" so it's time for them to put their money where their mouth is and leave voters cover the cost. It's running at around £50bn lost tax revenue per annum now...

So each leave voter needs to cough up £3000 per annum (uprated annually) to compensate everyone else"
