Meanwhile while the government has been ruining the economy and social cohesion by pissing about with a failed Brexit for the last six years, the Uk is on course to miss our climate targets and the globe will experience huge huge global stressors which the UK could have taken a global lead on tackling. Globally we will miss the 1.5celsius limit.
We haven’t even put enough money in to fund our own UK commitments. This is absolutely devastating news and makes me very worried for the future.

Obviously the tories will lose the next GE. The big question is whether Labour under Starmer is actually going to do a better job. You might say, who could do worse? But I’m not bowled over by those advising, around him. Fgs, Keir Mather looks 12 years old to me. It’s not easy, but who does Labour represent now?

Have taken to listening to "Pod Save The UK"

Maybe not to everyones taste (I felt slight aggrieved to be told I was doing being white wrong on a previous episode). However they don't hold back from highlighting where Labour are going wrong.

The <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.ph/2023.07.21-002146/www.thetimes.co.uk/article/paris-hails-spectacular-success-in-luring-banks-from-london-after-brexit-978t6r5tf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">gift that keeps on giving. To France at least...

It showed financial firms that moved from London contributed €1.5 billion to France’s financial services surplus last year.

Hmm, doesn't see to like the link, although it works.

I hope it's not MN censoring anything anti Brexshit...

prettybird · 21/07/2023 17:55

I can see the link Smile

It's interesting that it mentions that Nonetheless, France recorded a record current account deficit last year of €53.9 billion, equivalent to 2 per cent of economic output as the high cost of energy imports offset the services surplus.

This is of course in contrast with the UK's deficit of £137 billion, equivalent to 5.4% of GDP. ConfusedHmm

Exclusive: Thousands of young European waiters, baristas & au pairs could be allowed to come to the UK for two years under plans to plug gaps in the British workforce

No10 has asked Home Office to negotiate youth mobility schemes with EU countries

Suella Braverman, the home secretary, and Robert Jenrick, the immigration minister, have made offers to a number of their European counterparts in recent months.

In particular ministers are understood to be looking at France, Germany, Spain and Switzerland (not in EU)

Lots of govt departments keen for this to happen.

Defra want youth mobility expansion for farming, fish processing and manufacturing

DfE back more mobility for UK/European youngsters

And HMT officials think good for inflation

But the catch is the European Commission doesn't want bilat deals.

It is arguing it falls within its remit and any negotiation must be with the bloc as a whole.

This hasn't been ruled out by UK-side, but govt feels this will lead to slow painful negotiation

Given the pisspoor conditions in the UJK, the wages will need to be spectacular.

That's not me, that's my Spanish chums.

DuncinToffee · 23/07/2023 15:37

Difficult decision, FOM in 27 countries or a 2 year visa for the UK 🤔

prettybird · 23/07/2023 15:42

"Exclusive: Thousands of young European waiters, baristas & au pairs could be allowed to come to the UK for two years"

While being allowed to come to the UK Hmm, will they be required to pay the premium to use the NHS? Hmm

£470 or £624 per annum (depending on how they are categorised) to be paid up front, plus the same again for any dependents Shock

https://www.nhsinform.scot/care-support-and-rights/health-rights/access/healthcare-for-overseas-visitors

...which would mean that their salaries would need to be all the more spectacular to make it worth their while Confused

Oh, and make sure not to fall in love with anyone while you're in the UK as it's highly unlikely you'll be allowed to stay after your 2 years (hostile environment and all that Angry).

Obviously the ability to speak English anywhere and everywhere is a big draw. However 2 years is more than enough for that.

So all this brainwave will do is embed the short term nature of these roles, removing them from UK citizens.

I was intrigued by the suggestion the EU could consider such a move falling under it's aegis which will piss (once again) on Brexiteer chips as it prevents the UK being able to splinter the EU. This falls into the category that the EU of 2023 is not the same EU of 2020 that we (finally) left. And that divergence will continue apace.

Why on earth would you expect people who've not been UK taxpayers previously to be able to avail themselves immedaitely of the NHS without making a financial contribution toward it first? The "up front" fee is just that. Good to see.

SerendipityJane · 25/07/2023 14:51

While that sounds vaguely sensible, you have to remember you are then effectively charging people who want to come and work in the UK.

Quite aside from the balance (is everyone we provide a visa to expected/requried to pay the same ?) is the question of how that will feed into the wages such people will require to come and work here.

Bearing in mind right now they would be doing us a favour - it's the UK that is short staffed.

And, of course Indias demand (after unlimited visas) is that there is none of this "NHS fee" for them. Possibly fair enough since most of them will be working in the NHS.
