And instead of tightening relations with the closest neighbours sharing a European history, our government is seeking a FTA (and more visas for) India.

The country with the highest approval rating for Russia. That’s nice.

Not just "more" visas. Unlimited. The Indians aren't stupid and know how do do a deal with a customer whose testicles are in a vice. And as pointed out, they will not settle for less now they have got one of their own at the top. Although, they also know that window of opportunity is closing rapidly.

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/07/2023 17:47

You do have to wonder how stupid these people are that 7 years on they still don’t get that the EU doesn’t really do bilateral agreements. It’s sort of the fundamental point of union bit.

RafaistheKingofClay · 15/07/2023 17:55

Albania has candidate status for the EU. Having spent a year trying to scare us about Albanians in small boats it would be pretty funny if all their ‘bilateral negotiations’ with Eastern European states ended up with us trying to encourage immigration from young unskilled Albanians.

Fuck all. Not only funny, but certain.

"One of their own at the top" 😬Wowsers...I hope you're not suggesting that one Rishi Sunak, born Southampton, England, is for some reason primarily loyal to another country than the one of his birth and that he's PM of?!

I suggest you look where Mrs Sunak was born. And who her parents are.

DrBlackbird · 16/07/2023 09:51

Yes Rishi is British born, but his wife Akshata Murty is still a citizen of India and remains non domiciled in the UK. They both used to own Catamaran Ventures the London branch of the Indian firm owned by her father, until Rishi transferred his shoes to her. Rishi’s father in law owns the 2nd largest IT conglomerate in India with +250,000 employees. So it’s beyond naive to think that Sunak has not got skin in the game in any FTA with India.

But good try @LouiseCollins28 for jumping in with an implied racist dig at @SerendipityJane as fast as you could. Nice opportunity to show the ‘I never voted Leave because of my immigration fear’ credentials.

What's the score with Rish! green card ? You know - the one that requires he adheres to a foreign nations laws ? At least Boris had the decency to not be an American for his premiership.

DuncinToffee · 16/07/2023 11:01

Where are all the brexiteers celebrating the CPTPP deal, a whopping 0.08% UK GDP?

HannibalHeyes · 16/07/2023 12:06

Where are all the Brexshiteers complaining about Rish! selling "are sovrintee" without a referendum? Why isn't Fartage outraged by it? Why isn't KGBNews all over it?

HannibalHeyes · 16/07/2023 13:34

"The CPTPP agreement contains Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) provisions. These allow corporations to sue states... if government polices threaten their future profits – even if those policies are aimed at protecting human rights and the environment."

Sovrintee innit...

Sovrintee innit...

We can disregard those in a limited and specific way though ...

Kucinghitam · 17/07/2023 08:09

Thank goodness that Sovrintee tastes so good, is so nutritious, supplies so much energy, can magically transmute into any raw material and can flow frictionlessly across the Brexit border.

Oh, wait.

Meanwhile, in the real world.

Malaysia is happy

https://twitter.com/AlexTaylorNews/status/1680842191722233858?s=20

The Malaysian Press seems well pleased with joining CPTPP, notably, we read, because ...

1. UK will be "bound" by Malaysian rules covering palm oil

2. They are also insistingadopt a law preventing any "negative labelling of products from Malaysia."
You bet they are !

HannibalHeyes · 17/07/2023 13:44

Yay! More deforestation! Go Brexshit!

Ffs they really are intent on totally destroying this country.

DrBlackbird · 17/07/2023 19:38

Well that’ll be the end of any British efforts to promote sustainable palm oil. FFS is there not a single informed and knowledgable negotiator/advisor contributing to these trade deals? When the US was negotiating or considering whether to sign up to one multi lateral trade agreement they had 400 lawyers reviewing it for US implications. This govt causes me despair!

mirages08 · 17/07/2023 20:23

Leaving: a zero sum game
Utterly depressing yet utterly predictable

So much for sovereignty, eh ?

I notice the lack of any Brexiteers even trying to justify this now.
