In the last 24H alone, the EU has made significant moves towards...

A) Forming a gas bulk-buying scheme, whereby EU countries can pool orders so that they have much greater clout with suppliers.

B) Sealing a trade deal with the USA that would help with EV production.

Granted, today's pace is slightly higher than average.

But the truth is, the EU is engaged in new initiatives and new partnerships all the time.

The EU we left has already evolved, and its members have greater benefits today than when we slammed the door on our way out.

Meanwhile in the U.K. someone in government has produced this.

Presumably they’ll still be able to access the old slavery system. Or just not being slaves at all.

Or perhaps the uk’s modern slavery system is going to be a new policy on public sector pay. Who knows?

It’s quite telling that the emphasis is on stopping the boats not the traffickers.

HannibalHeyes · 07/03/2023 21:16

And completely ignoring boats like that of Michelle Mone...

HannibalHeyes · 07/03/2023 21:19

Guess which Billy No Mates isn't going to be involved in this...

Illegal migrant bill can be read in different ways.

Illegal migrant bill can be read in different ways.

I might have avoided putting it the title of the bill and I would definitely have avoided splitting the illegal from the migration bill bit in that poster.

But at least they are honest about this I suppose.

Fladdermus · 07/03/2023 21:38

I didn't know Britain had a modern slavery system. I knew the old one had been abolished a while back. But when did they bring it back in?

Like the honesty about the single market benefits Wink

Feels like someone is trolling them from the inside but it's more likely they are that stupid

Having turned the clock back to golden days before we entered the EU, carried on going until we got to rationing fruit and veg, and increased pumping sewage into rivers, going back to before the abolition act seems like an reasonable step.

Think they’ve probably missed out workhouses but I’m sure there’s time to go back to them.

Someone should probably stop them before they start repealing all the late 19th C public health/education/factory acts.

The UN appear to be unimpressed with the illegal bill.

Well the traffickers pay the MPs that voted to continue their business model.

If the UK withdraws from the ECHR it can kiss goodbye to any data sharing from the countries that remain. Unless it's willing to negotiate, sign and honour individual treaties with them that confer the same rights on their citizens in the UK, or individuals deported to the UK.

And we already know the ECHR has to continue to apply in NI, thanks to the GFA.

I think we know where they've been testing.

Doesn't matter. This is all about timing for the next election. Withdrawal from ECHR will be a campaign slogan (and I'm sure popular with the stupid) to win votes it the next election. I'm hoping it'll backfire, winning the Tories enough votes to prevent Labour having a majority and forcing a coalition with the Lib Dems. The Lib Dems will then demand voting reform and a referendum on PR, PR will seriously limit Tory power going forward.

That govt poster has utterly made my morning.

Wonder what genius got paid to produce this?

Much as they did last time ? Sadly I know some people (not necessarily the brightest and best of their class) who voted against electoral reform last time because it wasn't "proper PR".

pointythings · 08/03/2023 10:46

@SerendipityJane it wasn't proper PR though, was it? It was a fudge with AV. We shouldn't settle for anything less than full PR.

My only small consolation is that even some died in the wool Tories such as my BiL is turning away from the craziness and stupidity of the current Tory party. One tries to live in hope for the pennies to drop.

Though none of the political parties currently impress me. Confused

Oh I agree. But don't let perfection be the enemy of progress. The non-dim view would be to get the principle of electoral reform accepted - even with a shit version - and the work to refine it.

Labour were fucking idiots to oppose it. But then most of my "support" for Labour is predicated on the rather esoteric "not Tories" test.

I wonder if the company will taunt the UK a second time (gotta love the French, they really know how to insult when they want) and farm that out to an even more remote subsidiary like they did with passports to Poland. The stated reason being "it's not that important a contract for us".

The drift into fascism accelerates...

Confidence in an apolitical civil service is one of the cornerstones of the British system.

But here we see the questioning of policy proposals by people paid to be the voice of reason being deliberately mischaracterised as politically inspired sabotage.

Scorched earth. But what would you expect from a government put in place by Russia ?

www.theregister.com/2023/03/08/uk_space_research_funding/

With the noble goal "to grow the UK as a global space superpower," the UK Space Agency (UKSA) has scraped together a princely £1.6 million ($1.9 million) to be divvied up between eight research programs.

(Note the comments section about the Rwanda plan having already cost £140 million)

At this point, they aren't even trying.
