Brexit

to still be angry about Brexit?

I've mentioned this before and got shot down - 'move on', 'we won, you lost', 'red wall was justified', 'democracy' (although as Brexiter David Davis said, democracies can change their minds) etc etc. Anyway, if anything I am even more angry now than in 2016! Seeing queues at Dover/airports etc (I know not only down to Brexit, but it makes it worse) just reinforced it. I'm not going to rehash all the reasons here, but am just interested in whether other people are still as furious as I am. (And I do know it's not doing my stress levels any good!)

to still be angry about Brexit?
Pipsquiggle · 04/08/2023 06:21

Yep still pissed off about Brexit. I thought I might have mellowed by now or at least become less irked.
I have been actively trying to cling on to any positives to make me feel better but there simply aren't any.
I think what most annoys me is that all the liars and the charlatans have got away with it. They conned so many people who believed all the unsubstantiated claims, they haven't delivered on any and nothing is happening to them. It boils my piss

Pipsquiggle · 04/08/2023 08:14

Just noticed my first post on this thread (page 6 if you are interested) was over a year ago and everything on my list has got worse over the last 12 months - so sad yet predictable

SJDoubleU · 04/08/2023 09:44

Agree absolutely. The anger never leaves me. People still trying to justify it are infuriating too. I was called an "f*ing traitor" by Leavers when I tried to warn them. I lost the small property I had in Spain when I had to return to this country because of Brexit. Not going to forget or forgive. Ever.

I agree, absolutely nobody is holding the liars that sold Brexit to account and least of all the fools who voted for it. The only people that seem to be blamed for Brexit failures are Remainers who warned against it, blamed for not 'believing in Brexit' hard enough. It's like a fucking cult.

The bit that really got me was in the weeks and months following the vote (when we had decided to leave but hadn't actually left) the brexiteers were saying that "all these predictions of doom and gloom haven't come true have they"? Morons.”

This. We’ve not had the half of it.

Even now, trying to get Brexiteers to agree whether Brexit has actually happened or not never produces a single consensus. There's another thread running as I type proving this.

Brexit seems to be that example of pornography - people can't define it, but they know what it is when they see it ....

beguilingeyes · 04/08/2023 12:40

I'm totally with Danny Dyer on David Cameron. He should have been made to stay up and clean up his mess.
The fact that these fuckers have destroyed the country and can just swan off Into the sunset with no repercussions is infuriating.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/08/2023 14:14

I'm afraid all us '' experts' who have businesses trading in EU and have travelled all over- not just beach resorts once a year- well problem is we were 100% correct and that pisses off those who realise they were totally sold a pup as most are a bunch of numpties whose 'research' came courtesy of Farage and the Express/Sun and the seriously well off don't care because they can afford to have multiple places abroad as well as here and do their 2 months here and there etc- see Sunak for details.

SofiaSoFar · 04/08/2023 15:09

I'm still periodically enraged by Brexit for various reasons:

It completely screwed up the business I work for in terms of investment, a planned sale (which was imminent in 2016), and now a complete mess of visa requirements and extra careful planning of projects due to consultants running out of EU travel days.

It became impossible for us to keep our home in France. (Smallest violin, I'm sure, but still...)

Friends lost their business entirely due to plummeting EU sales because of increased costs and bureaucracy.

DD (20s) and her generation have had their free-moving, multi-cultural futures ripped from them.

It sickens me that something so important was put to a bloody referendum.

Why on earth did any government think that a massively important decision on membership of the EU should go to the polls to be voted on by any numbskull who can wield a crayon in their wank-crippled claw, but something like nuclear arms strategy would be deemed too critical to see the light of day in public?!

Crikeyalmighty · 04/08/2023 15:32

@SofiaSoFar absolutely - at least with a general election you have a chance of reversing shitty choices- even if it's 5 years- this you didn't!!

Parky04 · 04/08/2023 22:45

Time we moved on!

Parky04 · 04/08/2023 22:45

Time we moved on!

Well, I would move on if we didn't have to live with the impact of the decision. But we are living with it, so I don't quite know how we are supposed to move on from that.

What does "moving on" look like to you? In my head, it would involve acknowledging that Brexit was a mistake and asking the EU to take us back. For some people, I guess that "moving on" might mean pretending that Brexit hasn't been a disaster and studiously avoiding any mention of it. What do you mean by it?

Crikeyalmighty · 04/08/2023 23:23

@Parky04 I'm sorry - people who have had businesses hugely impacted, relationships impacted, had to sell homes, had retirement plans decimated- they simply aren't going to just feel like 'moving on' and are entitled to rant away as much as they like.

SofiaSoFar · 05/08/2023 00:38

Parky04 · 04/08/2023 22:45

Time we moved on!

As PPs have said - how do you see 'moving on'?

Do we pretend it never happened? Pretend it's all ok? Pretend we're not all poorer economically, culturally and politically?

Highlyflavouredgravy · 05/08/2023 00:46

I am/ was fiercely anti- brexit. I signed all the petitions, went on the marches, wrote to MPs. All to no avail.
I now I have a child studying modern foreign languages at University who is just about to embark on their mandatory year abroad. To say it is a shitshow would be an understatement. The hoops they have had to jump through to obtain a visa have been awful, the cost is eye watering, the Erasmus funding is no more. The university support is much less than expected because nobody knows how it all works under the new system.
I am absolutely FURIOUS.

I thought i would feel better as time went on but no. I just get more angry.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 05/08/2023 00:48

AND....my brother's business has gone to the wall because of it.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 05/08/2023 00:50

The people that I know who voted leave are all complaining now.
Schadenfreude

That's the only tiny bit of pleasure that Brexit brings.

I'm not ashamed to say that I inwardly smile whenever anyone I know who voted 'leave' mentions any hardship they're suffering that's attributable to it.

I never used to be like this but I could honestly disown even close family over Brexit at times.

I can't even find black humour in it...They're now getting stuck into a death cycle of blame, hate and zenophobia. I can't bear it.

fullbloom87 · 05/08/2023 01:03

I didn't vote in the referendum but from everything I've gathered about remainers is that their anger stems from having their travel conditions changed, and it's ironic since so many of them are climate activists too.

Really? You don't seem to have listened or read very much, then.

fullbloom87 · 05/08/2023 02:02

@Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours well it's true that the main anger points are usually based on travel issues. Not saying there aren't other issues.

Can I suggest that you develop your research skills? You might be able to start "gathering" some real facts if you try.

Pipsquiggle · 05/08/2023 08:23

@fullbloom87 maybe develop your critical thinking skills and research techniques.
Start by reading this thread.
Logistics, trade, employment opportunities, productivity, red tape, businesses closing are all cited ...................

But yeah it's all about 'travel.' FFS
