Brexit

to still be angry about Brexit?

I've mentioned this before and got shot down - 'move on', 'we won, you lost', 'red wall was justified', 'democracy' (although as Brexiter David Davis said, democracies can change their minds) etc etc. Anyway, if anything I am even more angry now than in 2016! Seeing queues at Dover/airports etc (I know not only down to Brexit, but it makes it worse) just reinforced it. I'm not going to rehash all the reasons here, but am just interested in whether other people are still as furious as I am. (And I do know it's not doing my stress levels any good!)

I think we'll continue to wait.

TurquoisePterodactyl · 01/08/2022 23:55

No Leave voter is going to want to engage in the face of constant vitriol

People are just asking for facts to support your views. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but without any actual facts to back them up, your opinions are worth no more than the flat-earthers' opinions.

Do you have anything to tell us?

Anti-English xenophobia.

Seriously? The earlier poster who said this is moronic was right.

Onlyhereforthebatshitneighbours · 02/08/2022 00:01

Ive been dipping in and out of this thread all day and haven't seen any vitriol. Have I missed it?

TurquoisePterodactyl · 02/08/2022 00:06

That was to @RaspberryParfait who said:

£ is stronger against the Euro than it was in the years before Covid

😆😆

TurquoisePterodactyl · 02/08/2022 00:08

Fact-free zone rant right there.

Nope. We are all ears. Waiting to hear about the Brexit benefits. Something actually based in facts, that compensates for the 30% drop in the value of GBP when we import a large chunk of energy and fuel: essentials. All priced in USD. Fun time to do that!

And collapse lots of businesses who used to export, making our balance of payments as a country even worse than it was!

And a myriad of other things. Labour shortages, much fewer opportunities and options for young people to work abroad, older people can't retire abroad, those who already have won't have their pensions uprated anymore.

And now we're getting to what the real goal was, where rights will start to be rolled back.

Please do tell us the tangible benefits and what Brexit has improved? We would all genuinely love to hear anything on this that wasn't fantasy. We've been waiting a long time.

You think the 30% drop in GBP Vs USD is because of Brexit?

What's the reason for the 30% drop in EUR Vs USD?

TurquoisePterodactyl · 02/08/2022 00:17

This was all about getting bitter people, or racist people, or nasty people, or thick people, or people who are easily manipulated and know nothing about economics and international trade, to vote for self-harm because it would make a small group of people incredibly rich.

Is nobody aware of the "blood on the streets" book written by Rees-Mogg's father? Do people seriously still at this point not get it?!

Much better to admit you've been duped and fix the problems than keep pretending that the worst plan in western political history - executed as badly as it could possibly have been - was a good idea. I mean, come on. Enough is enough now.

Which leaver will come and tell us how the benefits of this outweigh what is lost, which is huge in economic and cultural terms. Anybody, at all??

No it's a genuine question. why is the EUR Vs USD down by a similar degree to the GBP Vs USD if the GBP Vs USD fall is caused by Brexit?

ilovesooty · 02/08/2022 00:44

No one's going to admit they were duped - or very few people anyway.

Unfortunately they can't fix it either. I'll never forgive those who persist in supporting the results of that vote - not that many will be affected by that as I don't know many people who voted to leave.

Galvantula · 02/08/2022 06:43

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/08/2022 14:25

I voted for it but had I known about covid and the Ukraine war I wouldn’t have

Surely the pandemic was an opportunity where we could likely have reverse ferreted on the whole thing, without losing face to voters out anyone else.

But no, greedy fuckers who stood to make money while it all went to shit wasted time making sure it went through.

Cunts the lot of them.

Stop making things up please.

Thanks for posting that chart, I was beginning to think my memory was going.

Having some sterling income (e.g. pensions) whilst living in euroland means the STG/EUR exchange rate has been close to our hearts for a long time and the sterling income has to be declared in euros in our euroland tax return every year...

Imagine our complete surprise when we read how well Sterling had been doing vs. the euro since 2016....I actually went and looked at some old paperwork over breakfast...and guess what?....The reality is of course reflected in that chart, but hey, who needs data when you can chuck in some fact free nonsense to muddy the debate....

So in 2014 a massive deal was made that if the Scots left the UK, then they would also leave Europe. And they voted to stay in the UK and so also the EU.
Then you are saying in 2016 they voted to remain in the EU because of anti English xenophobia 🤔
I don't think that is correct

Yep this. The problems are just starting.

I miss being anle to go in the fast EU queue at airports. I miss being able to take a sanswich on the Eurostar without worrying I’ll get fined for importing controlled goods if it has butternon the bread.

Most of all I hate how we pissed off all our closest allies and wasted huge amounts of EU & British government time and money.

I reckon the whole thing was a project by Russian intelligence services in the run up to the invasion of Ukraine. They needed a weak EU.

You can take sandwiches on Eurostar and there's no ban on fillings.

I've noticed there is an apathy for the EU amongst Brits living in the UK. They have no appetite for FOM or a stagnating boss in Brussels. Most would warm to a return to the Common Market where it's about trade only. But the UK is on a new path and it's going to take timeto untangle from a 40 year relationship.

The people complaining are mostly non-Brits (esp Irish) and Brits who live in the EU or who used to spend copious amounts of time living in the EU without the need to return to the UK.

Tiggy321 · 02/08/2022 08:22

I will always be angry and sad about Brexit. Luckily for me, I managed to get an EU passport as live abroad. That makes me feel a bit better but still sad !

That style looks familiar..

"You can take sandwiches on Eurostar and there's no ban on fillings."

There's no ban on fillings on airlines either but FWIW the assumption is you'll consume the sandwich before arrival in the EU...I think Eurostar may use similar logic:

www.eurostar.com/rw-en/travel-info/travel-planning/travel-documents/customs

"You cannot take the following with you into the EU:
meat or products containing meat"........

"Sandwiches and snacks intended for consumption during the journey can include fruit, vegetables, meat or dairy products."

"The people complaining are mostly non-Brits (esp Irish) and Brits who live in the EU or who used to spend copious amounts of time living in the EU without the need to return to the UK."

Nice bit of stereotyping there..What you say might be true here but then again that group you mention will have more contact with the realities of Brexit in the last few years than many in the UK (in part due Covid travel restrictions) and can see a through a lot of the lies (e.g. exchange rates)....

I don't know about your claims that the whinges come from people not needing to return to the UK but Brexit certainly has made it more difficult for British citizens to return if they choose to do so....but I guess we're back to the subject of Citizens of Nowhere...

Because it's not, you need to look at some currency charts before repeating what you ve read in the 'Express.

Midnightblack · 02/08/2022 11:13

Where is your evidence toodlepip for who the majority of complainants are?

DameHelena · 02/08/2022 11:14

YANBU. I'm still angry, as the downsides of it continue to accumulate and there is no sign of any benefits.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/08/2022 11:46

Ironic that @JosephineGH goes on about anti English xenophobia- whilst simultaneously telling us they've all got EU passports anyway and homes in uk and I think its France- oh and on another thread appears to be boasting about their 4,000 sq ft new build in the UK.

An awful lot of Carrie Johnson types on here- I'm all right Jack, we've got pots of money and EU passports so can move anywhere really , who cares if it's killed your business /industry and now means you have to jump through multiple hoops to live and work outside the UK -- we've made money from it and are all doing totally fine thank you!!!

And whilst I have some sympathy for those on the lower end of the pay scales and their delight in getting £3 an hour more due to staff shortages- this doesn't help with rapidly rising prices for those who are getting 2% pay rises etc in non shortage occupations

Midnightblack · 02/08/2022 11:56

Indeed. And since Brexit is costing us all over £4000 a year, the benefits of their pay rises will quickly be swallowed up.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/08/2022 12:11

@ToodlePipYouLongHairedGit what a load of rubbish. I was sat in a cafe having a coffee yesterday next to 2 guys in their 70s - definitely 'old school ' British Tory types - both talking about the current shower of shit government and their absolute lack of economic common sense and the fact that Brexit had zero benefits whatsoever to the average citizen apart from a slight uplift at the lower end of wages but was a death knell to many business and industries apart from sheer shit like 'spam farms' - as one guy said to the other 'why would you invest here-I wouldnt- as apart from things like retail and hospitality, it's not a big enough market for most exporting businesses ' this lack of foresight is killing off higher paid work- it's like a race to the bottom- levelling down not levelling up-

It most certainly isn't just Irish and Europeans living here having a big deal about it- it's no issue at all if you are Irish- you've got 'all' the rights . Brits living abroad? Well I've done it and it's now a beauracratic pain in the arse in certain countries - hence why we've come back.

To be frank I can see why some low paid people voted for it given the bilge they were fed but longer term an underperforming economy with less tax take won't help them- it feeds into services (or lack of them) prices and business viability.
