Brexit mega thread part 8: platinum jubilee edition
quiteathome · 02/08/2022 10:45

Just read the 70 billion thread on Twitter and got the rage.

Then read a cost saving article about pay cuts for public sector workers outside the South East. To save 11 billion. (Truss idea)

DuncinToffee · 02/08/2022 11:02

www.cornwalllive.com/news/cornwall-news/small-company-cornwall-awarded-giant-7407664?

A company based in Cornwall has been given the job of overseeing a £70 billion contract to help deliver the country's transition to Net Zero

The small company is a "specialist consulting, project management and research company with 18 years’ experience in the field of education".

quiteathome · 02/08/2022 11:18

Yes, that is the one. It is possible that it is a badly reported story. However....

DuncinToffee · 02/08/2022 11:28

It's all very strange...

People getting what they voted for and still complaining.

www.farminguk.com/news/farm-unable-to-fulfil-150-000-of-business-due-to-brexit-port-changes_60840.html

As James Acaster surgically noted, the Brexit referendum was like choosing to eat in a restaurant where the menu was printed by someone who didn't run the place to order from a kitchen that had no idea how to cook. So if you ordered a fillet steak, but got a plate of shit, it's hardly a surprise.

DuncinToffee · 02/08/2022 14:35

Explanation about the 70 billion 'contract'

So the government has absolutely NOT awarded a 70BN contract to a random Cornish company to oversee the entire net zero transition. Here's the quite boring (but much less viral) thing that's actually happened:

Brexit would have been great if only the EU weren’t powerful enough to impose upon us the terms the UK had itself agreed to. Brexit would have been great if we could have kept freedom of movement for ourselves. Brexit would have been great if reality was fundamentally different.

HannibalHeyes · 03/08/2022 12:07

And look everybody! There's finally a graph that shows an upward trend after Brexit!

I am presuming the LHS scale is x1000 ?

Remember: this is Tory Britain. Companies going bust are also a classic scamsters tactic. Especially in a recession. Not all of those instances will be as genuine as others ....

www.scotsman.com/news/opinion/columnists/tories-hard-brexit-is-putting-people-at-risk-from-toxic-chemicals-dr-richard-dixon-3792319

Since Brexit, the EU has restricted five chemicals and has 20 restrictions in the pipeline." This includes "a group of eight chemicals linked to cancer" and a cosmetics ingredient that "can affect fertility".

"The UK has restricted only two."

So far the 'leadership' debates have reinforced a theory I have that British political discourse is gobsmackingly backward looking.

It's also becoming very clear that amateurism is alive and kicking in Westminster.

borntobequiet · 05/08/2022 07:12

It's also becoming very clear that amateurism is alive and kicking in Westminster.

And not as practised by gifted amateurs either.

Sunak kept on saying last night that the "root cause" of the predicted UK recession was "inflation". Confused

Fucking numpty: inflation is a symptom not a cause. And what is it a symptom of? Rising prices caused by mostly Brexit and rising commodity prices at the same time as massive profits by energy companies. It's a prime example of push-led inflation - and the problem is that trying to constrain people's spending to control it (eg via interest rates) will no nothing when you're taking about basic human needs; power, light, water and food Sad - and in the modern day economy, transport Sad

The elephant in the room is of course Brexit. Angry

Why else is Ireland experiencing lower inflation, lower power price increases and greater growth not recession ? Hmm

Why else is the UK projected for the lowest G20 growth bar sanctioned and pariah Russia? Hmm

prettybird · 05/08/2022 11:41

Another Brexit "win" which we've discussed before: difficulties for the Scottish salmon industry Sad

Scottish Salmon raising it as an issue again after the recent queues at the Channel, https://www.salmonscotland.co.uk/salmon-exports-border-delays and of course the only national paper to pick it being The Guardian Hmm

https://theguardian.com/politics/2022/aug/02/scottish-salmon-industry-urges-ministers-to-act-over-dover-delays

Note the curmudgeonly response from the Government Angry

A government spokesperson said on Wednesday: “Scottish salmon is an export success story worth hundreds of millions of pounds, and we are committed to improving the UK imports and exports process for traders.
"Prioritising specific consignments would impact other traffic movements. However, we continue to work closely with the Port of Dover, Kent Resilience Forum and the French government to ensure the flow of all goods is maintained.”

....this is the UK's single biggest food export Shock And the government chose to put barriers in its way Angry

That's so well-put, sums up what DH and I have been talking about this week.

There's no doubt that rising fuel prices and fears over food security are an issue globally at the moment, but we in the UK have imposed ("semi-voluntarily" at 48:52) additional pressures upon ourselves. Which nobody in politics is prepared to name. It's Brexit. Brexit. Brexit.

The elephant in the room is of course Brexit.

Absolutely not mentioned by anyone anywhere (well, very occasionally).
It’s so strange. I’m trying to think of a similar occurrence and all I can think of is a relative notorious for doing stupid things that have resulted in her life being difficult and complicated, but you can’t mention the fact that her circumstances are a direct result of poor decisions and pig headedness or she flies off the handle and engineers some sort of crisis to distract. (Actually I think it’s a pretty direct parallel. She has no diagnosed MH issues, but there’s definitely something going on.)
The problem is that it means she never changes her behaviour, so her life just keeps getting worse, and everyone else suffers too.

While the governor of the BoE is warning that inflation could become systemic, it's amusing that for the Tories Brexit is now systemic. It's not being mentioned because it's still Boris brexit.

I am suspecting they are hoping to pull a snap election once marie trussonette is coroned and with a fresh government move to pretend brexit is just part of UK life. Like wasps in summer.

When your only shot at continuing to exist is a choice between two high risk strategies that you have no expertise in, you really should be questioning your life choices.

For myself, the best shot they have is to pull an election hours if not days after Truss kisses hands. That's if the Palace are amenable and Truss can deliver the required VoNC needed to trigger a GE. Oh, and team Boris (which is more than Mad Nad) stay well out of it.

DuncinToffee · 06/08/2022 11:48

Unsafer roads, brexit bonus

Motorists could be allowed to drive lorries - up to 7.5 tons - without extra test in ‘Brexit bonus’ plan. Call for Evidence opens today...

They've repealed the FTPA so no need for a VoNC.

The Palace is on jobsworth alert ... they can query the need for an election with an 80 strong majority and over 2 years or term left. Remember they shot down team Boris plan to sidestep the Tory party shenanigans by calling a GE.

I think they've only now realised how close they are to being edged out. But if you are going full fat fascist you don't want a Monarch around too much.

Charles the Last has a nice ring to it.

FrankieStein403 · 07/08/2022 15:03

>they can query the need for an election with an 80 strong majority

Except whoever wins can argue that they want a radical new agenda to address the national crisis and need a 'mandate'

hey are more than welcome to argue it. Whether the Monarch agrees is another matter - remember Boris the great really queered the pitch when it came to advising the Monarch. Fool me once etc etc.

I see there are now a fucktonne of Tories that really want Boris gone to kill off the Partygate enquiry. Because that hasn't stopped and risks him being forced into a by election by recall. Ho ho ho. Now I don't think he will go (and am recorded here as suspecting that whoever wins the ever increasing pantomime of Tory leader, won't see Boris off).. But time will tell.

DuncinToffee · 08/08/2022 12:11

Keep brexit safe is Sunak’s latest slogan.

He promises to review every EU law on the statute book in his first 100 days.

Lala land.
