Can you explain why you would like the UK population to fall, @LouiseCollins28?

And would falling by just about 2 million or approximately 5.5 million be OK? There are easy ways to accomplish either drop.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jul/04/population-crisis-britain-paul-morland

An interesting article in today’s Graun on the UKs population crisis. all the gains are in the 70-74 age bracket, closely followed by the over-90s. The birthrate is dropping off, which you might not notice now, but the you who needs your bin emptied in 20 years’ time might

We need active contributors to the govt purse in order for pensions to work. Shame we’ve kicked out young, hard working Europeans contributing to this country.

borntobequiet · 05/07/2022 08:38

I’m not happy about the Labour position but understand their reasoning. Manifesto commitments are time limited and perhaps this could lead to a longer term effort to be part of a wider EU, EEA or EFTA.

We are noticing the changes right now. There's a lot more demand for social care and fewer people to do it. That particular crisis is going to accelerate.

TheElementsSong · 05/07/2022 10:56

I'm puzzled, surely there should be 17 million patriotic eager beavers desperate to Make Brexit Work?

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2022 11:07

No patriotic eager beavers for seasonal work

news.sky.com/story/food-costs-soaring-as-farms-are-crushed-by-visa-shortfall-12645764
Labour shortages on British farms have left tonnes of food unpicked, costing millions of pounds and pushing food inflation as high as 20% at the farm gate, the agriculture industry has told Sky News.

No idea. In the same place as the 40 hospitals we were promised and the easy trade deals.

I think - when we eventually look back at Johnson's tenure - he will be remembered as 'the guy who fucked around, fucked up and fucked off.'

I am constantly underwhelmed by the public's voting choices but I just can't see how he will hang on for a second term.

Chevyimpala67 · 05/07/2022 16:22

Well, the price of lurpack has made the national news....

pointythings · 05/07/2022 17:09

I never buy Lurpak, can't stand it. I just buy own brand butter in 250g packs. Unsalted, obvs.

Chevyimpala67 · 05/07/2022 17:22

Bloody love salted lurpack :(
I've switched to the aldi version :(

Chevyimpala67 · 05/07/2022 17:29

Sorted our remortgage out - 1.27% so pleased with that
Planning on moving our savings to a higher rate account - ISAs are a bit shit atm
Not using the car as much
No idea what else to do other than shop around more for food :(
We don't drink really, no takeaways, no pets (thank god if what my friend pays out in pet insurance is normal!!!)
I'm rather dreading new uniform shopping next month 😫
It's a fuckfest tbh
I'm going to offer ds2s old uniform on fb I think.
His "nice" trainers were stolen from the pe locker rooms a couple of months ago
:(

pointythings · 05/07/2022 17:52

Well, at least we aren't eating each other's butter!

I'm lucky not to have a mortgage, but I do have 4 cats. Right now they're young and healthy and instead of paying for insurance, I'm putting money away each month in a vet bills fund. This will have to change as they age.

No uniform, but 2 kids still in uni, fortunately they are v frugal, have savings and get the max maintenance loan.

Ha! Yes, that's true. No butter wars 🤣🤣

Oh gawd, yes, ds1s university allowance too. That'll have to go up...

Tbh I think your way of putting money aside is better re: pet Costa. My friend pays an eye watering amount and yet the cat still wasn't covered for its last op (£850)

Chevyimpala67 · 05/07/2022 18:50

Sajid javid just resigned!

pointythings · 05/07/2022 18:52

Rishi Sunak too!

Chevyimpala67 · 05/07/2022 19:12

Hmmmm
Who's next?
Raab?

SerendipityJane · 05/07/2022 19:12

So who can Boris appoint to be Chancellor and Health Secretary - now that it's been admitted his judgement is cack ?

Obviously someone as thick and venal as MadNad would jump at the opportunity, but you have to wonder who could continue in a cabinet where that happened ?

Clearly the dream ticket of Javid and Sunak has arisen to be protected from whatever further degradations Boris has in mind for team GB.

Presumably those left behind are expendable ? Makes sense when you look at Raab.

I find myself wondering if these resignations are in advance of knowledge not yet public, but easily divinable if you know who to listen to. Priti Patels latest wheeze has really put some backs around the world up, and that's before the UK commits itself to treaty breaking. Which is such a toxic brew that Sunak and Javid needed to be well clear of.

Chevyimpala67 · 05/07/2022 19:20

Ds1 and I have just had a,rather depressing conversation

I predict a snap election which De Pfeffle will win :(

mathanxiety · 05/07/2022 20:01

Is there really anyone venal or stupid enough left who would accept the poisoned chalice of an appointment at the juncture?

Chevyimpala67 · 05/07/2022 20:04

In the current tory govt?
Yes

borntobequiet · 05/07/2022 20:57

Blimey. Out all day but - blimey.

Steve Barclay it seems.

TheElementsSong · 06/07/2022 07:56

Pfeffel won't resign, he entirely lacks a sense of decency. And he's surrounded himself with loyal nodding dogs. That's in his government and his voter base.

HannibalHeyes · 06/07/2022 10:36

So it looks like "Operation Save Big Dig" is going about as well as Brexit then...
