Now that Johnson is toxic, which of his Cabinet qualify as not being toxic?

Hence my view that the party is dead whatever.

The further into the future we travel, it becomes harder to believe it wasn't by design. It really is starting to look like the Tory party - and the electorate that gave them life - have been "had".

All of a sudden we find ourselves recalling how much a certain D Cummings (forwarding address: Barnard Castle) detested the Tories and blogged in quite megalomaniac terms about destroying them.

DuncinToffee · 25/06/2022 18:23

Brexiteers have to keep shifting the goalposts not to look stupid.

Oven ready deal actually was too "optimistic" and Brexit now becomes the start of a journey, rather than the final destination.

Easiest ever trade deals, we hold all the cards. Government now quietly drops ‘human rights’ and ‘rule of law’ from list of goals in Gulf trade deal

DrBlackbird · 25/06/2022 19:24

If he stays - the Tory party dies. If he goes - the Tory party dies

One can only hope.

But also agree with @prettybird that the permanent damage he could do to the UK and its constituent nations in the interim and would only amend that to the damage that he is doing to the UK.

prettybird · 25/06/2022 19:51

You're absolutely right @DrBlackbird - I got the tense and conditionality wrong Blush.

He - supported by his cabal - are doing tremendous damage. Sad

And he doesn't give a fuck. Angry

DrBlackbird · 25/06/2022 20:22

Yes he’s seemingly doing as much damage as he possibly can @prettybird

Including to peace in NI, pushing Scotland to independence, to the economy, independence of journalism and judiciary, human rights, principles in politics etc etc etc (!)

On 23 June 2016, Geoffrey Betts, the managing director of a small office supplies business in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, had high hopes for his firm, and the British economy, when he voted for Brexit

“I thought we would be like … ‘here we go, here we go. We are going to become the most competitive country in Europe and we are going to be encouraging business.’ Now I think: ‘What have we done?’”

Another example of how Johnson and his brexshitters achieved this chaos aided by those failing to connect the dots…

Ben Wallace Defence secretary is having a 'good' war. Doing his job saying nothing about Boris. Definitely a good outside bet ...

prettybird · 26/06/2022 09:12

....and a bit "grey" like Major was Wink

prettybird · 26/06/2022 09:17

According to the BBC on the R2 news, BJ's comments about staying on to the mid 2030s should not be taken seriously. Confused

Now, is that because you can't believe a word that comes out of the liar's mouth? Hmm

It's the ongoing riddle: how do you know he's lying? .....his lips are moving. Angry

SerendipityJane · 26/06/2022 10:32

Those of a certain age will recall that what did for Thatcher was her messiah complex. Which reached it's apogee when - without consulting anyone - she announced she was "obviously" putting her name forward for the second ballot.

That was the point at which she had to go.

I wonder if yesterdays announcement from Boris - "This is me" - might have a similar effect. Given we know 148 of his own MPs wanted him gone before he pissed away 2 seats.

Thatchers downfall came not long after she suggested to the Palace that no. 10 with details of Thatcher would wear to functions so as not to clash with the Queen. (The palaces reply being "Her Majesty doesn't consult others on her choice of wardrobe"). I can see Boris and Carrie trying the same stunt Charles and Camilla. After all, Charles has to be bought to heel. And damn quick.

Just found on twitter;

Tory Insult Generator

DrBlackbird · 26/06/2022 16:21

Johnson on his expectations of being PM for 3 terms: "we have got a massive agenda of reform and improvement, a plan for a stronger economy, whereby we have to reform our energy markets, our housing markets, the way our transport networks run, our public sector – we’ve got to cut the cost of government.”

Code for "we plan to privatise, privatise, privatise as then we’ll regain our Tory donors so it’s not f#ck business going forward but f#ck the little people and oh by the way austerity is back as that was clearly a vote winner and everyone is well used to crap public services now for our low wage, low productivity economy."

Great….

Couldn’t agree more, sums up the last twelve years in a nutshell.

Menomadness · 27/06/2022 21:14

I am still lurking and trying to keep up. Thanks for all that keep us informed on these threads. I just popped in to say Teressa May and Simon Hoare are not very impressed! Teressa May in her best power beads and having eaten at least two weetabix

I am absolutely no fan of Teressa May but I did enjoy Truss getting a bit of a take down.

DuncinToffee · 27/06/2022 23:07

She abstained in the vote

Boris Johnson’s bid to unilaterally override parts of Northern Ireland’s Brexit deal clears its first Commons hurdle after MPs backed it 295 to 221, majority 74.

I know!! I have no idea why those that say they are so opposed to this don't let their vote be counted! She has nothing to lose from voting it down.

DrBlackbird · 28/06/2022 00:24

interesting to see some of the leadership contenders abstained and I was pleased to see my MP had also abstained, but how do we account for Nadine and Pritti doing so??

HannibalHeyes · 28/06/2022 07:52

Apparently, quite a few MPs weren't there. Obviously breaking International law wasn't something they considered important.

Lonelycrab · 28/06/2022 07:59

Well my MP abstained. That’s probably down to pairing though, isn’t it? Can’t imagine he’s suddenly grown a backbone..

DillonPanthersTexas · 28/06/2022 08:01

I accidentally stumbled across the MSN message boards the other day. My god what a cesspit, seems to be site where the wing nuts too extreme for the express and Mail pages end up. The general claims now (beyond 'we won get over it') is that Brexiteers always knew benefits would take several years to materialise and those unicorns would arrive earlier if only remoaners would stop 'talking the country down'. Complete collective dissonance. The language used is straight from a world war 2 film.

DuncinToffee · 28/06/2022 08:34

I thought my MP had found his back bone but he voted yes. Probably needs if he wants to bid for leadership.

quiteathome · 28/06/2022 09:46

My MP voted yes. I also thought he had grown a partial backbone.

Stupid question alert- what are the additional ramifications of a trade war? (Prices of everything are going up anyway. Brexit already crap for a lot of people- a friend was talking about all the additional paperwork needed at his engineering company- every component needs a pieces of paperwork. Sorry I am unclear of the details)

Trying to decide if there is any prep that can be done?
