Simon Clarke

Public sector workers should not expect a pay rise in line with inflation?”

Simon Clarke, Chief Secretary to the Treasury: “Correct.”

Kay Burley asking Simon Clarke if Brexit was to blame for airport chaos: answer, "the British people made it very clear they didn't want unlimited EU immigration and anyway, it's the airports' fault for not recruiting enough people" even though we're pretty much as full employment in macroeconomic terms Confused

Did we?
I don't recall a check list for why anyone voted Leave or Remain.

...and 17m people are not the "British Public"

prettybird · 20/06/2022 10:53

I also love the way that a narrow victory via 52% majority (driven by the English Hmm) = "very clear" Confused

....and that's even before the fact that it was purely an advisory referendum so we didn't know the detail of what we were voting for - and many of those promoting the Leave campaign were stating that "Of course we weren't going to be leaving the Single Market" Hmm

Peregrina · 20/06/2022 11:09

IMO though, Johnson got his real mandate when he won the 2019 election. He 'Got Brexit Done'. For the TrueBelievers that was enough. Any old deal was good enough. Even though his deal was worse that May's, even though he put a border down the Irish Sea, even though he negotiated in bad faith. This was still predominantly an English victory.

Now that they are finding that any old deal isn't actually all that good, it's everyone else's fault.

prettybird · 20/06/2022 11:35

But given the vagaries of the UK broken FPTP system, he didn't get voted for by a majority of British voters, so you still can't make the claim that "the British people made it very clear...." Confused

He only received 43.6% of the vote across the UK (only 25.1% in Scotland!).

Peregrina · 20/06/2022 11:53

Note that I am not making the claim about the majority of British voters. He didn't win in Wales, Scotland or NI. But he doesn't care about them anyway.

I'm just reiterating the actual numbers so that the facts are clear. Not that the cult followers care about pesky facts Wink

We truly live in a post truth world Sad

Essentially Labour wants to reestablish an alternative law making power base to rely upon when it doesn't hold the keys to No. 10. That's what the EU is about for them

Labour was and still is genuinely divided on Brexit. As were/are many actual and potential Labour voters.

However, establishing an alternative power base to No 10 to protect employment, consumer, citizen, and environmental rights etc was exactly what the EU was about for me.

All my fears and more coming to fruition now showing I was right to want Brussels as a counterweight to the vested self interest of Tories in power.

The problem with living in a post-truth world is that reality keeps intruding.

Very embarrassing.

DuncinToffee · 21/06/2022 12:38

"Brexiteers like me are realising it's impossible for Brexit to ever truly be done. Six years on, it's worrying to think we went through so much pain to 'take back control.'"

prettybird · 21/06/2022 12:46

In a post-truth, it's all the more important to keep re-stating the facts (aka reality, aka the truth Grin), even when if they're self evident to most of the contributors (and the lurkers who just read) of these threads Halo

If that's an "intelligent" brexiteer, imagine what the really dim ones are like.

Not only is this dweeb speaking for Louise and their elk*, they are drowning them out.

pointythings · 21/06/2022 13:48

@SerendipityJane I don't think he qualifies as intelligent. He actually still thinks Brexit could have worked and been beneficial to the UK. And if you read the article, he's like Louise - another idealogue who only cares about getting the word 'Brussels' removed from everything.

prettybird · 21/06/2022 14:14

Well, that was a waste of 5 minutes: an incoherent argument full of non-sequiturs and contradictions, which acknowledged that Brexit wasn't working but that it was still worth it Confused

SerendipityJane · 21/06/2022 14:27

I don't think he qualifies as intelligent.

He does, that's the problem. And he is not only speaking for the Louises of this world, but speaking over them too.

Brexit benefit! With the prohibitive cost of fuel, and the trains not running, we will all have to walk everywhere. Get fit the environmentally healthy way! Thanks Brexit!*

www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/how-did-brexit-do-so-much-damage-in-so-short-a-time

A project that was always irrational must grow more so in order to justify itself. And so the government is still justifying the basic lie at Brexit’s core. The lie that Brexit can work without causing harm.

Brexit is the new omertà: not only must its consequences be denied, they must never even be named.

How do we account for something that has caused so much destruction and misery in so short a time? Millions of words have been written but in the end, just three will do. Brexit is poison.
