Brexit

To ask what has improved since leaving the EU?

I’ve just had to pay customs charges on something I ordered from Germany - whilst we were in the EU there were no such charges.

Which got me thinking.

Leaving hasn’t been the disaster some predicted but, I can’t think of anything that affects me that’s actually improved since leaving.

What have other people’s upsides been? (And just being able to say we’re not in the EU anymore doesn’t count! 😂)

I think some things are pretty tricky to untangle from fall out from the pandemic. Many countries are also grappling with ridiculous rises in the cost of utilities and food, shortage of workers in some sectors etc- we aren't faring the worst although of course it has had an impact. I think it'll be a while before we truly know. The worst bit imo of brexit is NI.

Butterflyfluff · 20/02/2022 17:25

@fionnthedog I was looking for things that you and I think are better, not what Boris tells us has improved.

The example I used about having to pay customs charges on things I buy from the EU is a direct negative for me.

I’m looking for what offsets that.

@CorrBlimeyGG

clutching at straws but used cars?

Your new/ replacement car will be more expensive too I'm afraid.

I'd downsizing to a new Sandero - top of the (cheap) range one is the same price and the part ex for the Duster - I'm putting £500 in and getting it for £110 less a month

I'd still rather be in the EU!

ghostyslovesheets · 20/02/2022 17:29

Also look at the lovely new ‘ehic’ cards 😂 much nicer than the old ones and you can keep your sovereignty while you bleed to death in the car park

So not things that are too big and not things that are too trivial?

ghostyslovesheets · 20/02/2022 17:30

So patriotic

To ask what has improved since leaving the EU?
fionnthedog · 20/02/2022 17:31

@Butterflyfluff yes fair enough, I appreciate that. However in general I think what benefits society benefits me. So the debate is whether Boris’ claimed benefits to society are actually benefits…

Personally I’ve literally noticed no difference post Brexit, aside from the economic situation which I think is mostly thanks to Covid. But I wouldn’t want to equate my experience with everyone else.

Wineoclockx · 20/02/2022 17:34

Nothing

Nancydrawn · 20/02/2022 17:34

@OpheliaThrupps

I do think some of those things sound like benefits.

Now, some of those benefits are only made possible because the UK has less sovereignty and less say in what goes on in the EU (e.g. the tax havens, which it seems we were blocking). I'm not sure that's what the Leave campaign was arguing for, but honestly, as far as the world goes, I agree that's an upside.

Some of the benefits are risible. Pint glasses are a particularly silly example, but the wine one is very bad too. I suppose some people would rather import Australian wine more cheaply, but for my money I'd much rather have cheap French, Spanish, Italian, and even German and Austrian wines. (I suppose that's me being snobby and the fans of a very full bodied Cab Sav might be delighted.)

The factory one has to be balanced, I suppose, against all the factories have closed, but for the people of Wigan I'm sure it's an upside.

But even if some of these things are benefits, and I agree that some are, I'm afraid that I still think they are vastly outweighed by the drawbacks.

However, thank you for providing examples! And really they ought not all to be scoffed at--this is what people were asking for.

Nothing

Butterflyfluff · 20/02/2022 17:40

So not things that are too big and not things that are too trivial?

Please help me understand how having a crown printed on a pint glass makes any difference whatsoever to anyone’s life and is therefore worthy of mentioning when talking about benefits of Brexit.

It’s not difficult to understand why people might be interested in how their life might be improved by something that they’ve seen demonstrable downsides to.

@Butterflyfluff

Well, this has been moved to the Brexit thread now.

Absolute proof that the Brexit supporters want this hidden from general discussion.

Everything thread on AIBU would fit into a sub-category.

In the interests of consistency I hope any thread about gender ID will be moved to the Feminism section then.
ghostyslovesheets · 20/02/2022 17:42

still the NHS is thriving due to it's extra £350m a week - yes?

FourTeaFallOut · 20/02/2022 17:47

Well that poster included a lot of things other than a printed crown on a pint glass - you could have taken the time to agree or disagree with them, rather than dismiss them with a wave that they were all too trivial for you.

And then Fionnthedog linked to benefits which you dismissed as being too grand and not rooted in the everyday.

What kind of sweet spot are you looking for? Something absolutely equivalent to having to pay tax on your imported items?

fionnthedog · 20/02/2022 17:48

@ghostyslovesheets

I can’t believe I’m playing devil’s advocate on this topic (was remain!) but by 2024/5 the NHS will be getting around £1bn per week more than in 2016/17…

… however whether that’s because of Brexit is highly questionable… (ducks and runs)

Butterflyfluff · 20/02/2022 17:50

TBH yes - Brexit is costing me more in that instance and I don’t see what offsets it for the average Joe.

@FatFredsFriedEgg Not seeing like a fail... I managed to make a sentence without resorting to swearing so winning on that front. And that is the point I was making. If you chose to respond to statements without reasoned argument rather than throwing around expletives then that's down to you and what you believe to be right.
I'll finish my saying I don't assume that anyone in their right mind can believe that the suggestion of assisted dying is the answer to the current care crisies. But the answer to the problem is myriad - older population/family care/bloated NHS/care workers and status etc etc etc. It's not an issue that'll be solved with one arbitrary solution. Nor a few swear words.

TheUsualShitshow · 20/02/2022 18:00

I think what I'm looking for is something that is a tangible benefit to me or others around me.

Having a crown on my bloody pint glass, or it being slightly more tricky to shift a nicked bike to the European mainland isn't really doing it for me.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 20/02/2022 18:05

I guess losing EU labour will mean we can absorb more migration from Hong Kong, which I think is a good thing to do.

I didn't swear and I don't need your approval of my opinion. Run along.

The English countryside has changed... I don't know if for the better, but I'm seeing all sorts of land management changes in local agricultural fields. Interesting
