@DuncinToffee

NEW: Jacob Rees-Mogg has been appointed to minister for "Brexit Opportunities and Government efficiency" in the Cabinet Office. He will attend Cabinet, but it's a demotion to Minister of State.
And this was the moment that I knew satire was dead. It sounds like a joke job title! Most of all as no one has found any opportunities in the last 6 years
HappyWinter · 08/02/2022 22:20

Thanks for the food bank list @Opal8.

it is clear that EU exit has had an impact, and that new border arrangements have added costs to business

In the old days we could post something like this and have fun watching the brexiteers squirrels.

Sadly they've gone the way of the UK GDP. (R4 more or less has been doing a good job recently on refuting pfeffel claims of fastest GDP growth, crime reduction and employment growth)

@Opal8

If any of you want to donate food to your local foodbank they sometimes have shopping lists in their Facebook pages.

Otherwise I'd suggest any of the following:

Uht milk
Uht fruit juice
Tea
Coffee, hot chocolate
Sugar (we can give this if its requested )
Cereal
Tinned veg
Tinned fruit (not peaches! We get tonnes of peaches!)
Tinned meat such as chicken in sauce, meatballs, hot dog sausages
Tinned fish
Baked beans, noodles, rice, pasta
Pasta sauce, cooking sauces such as sweet and sour
Smash or similar
Biscuits, Crackers, chocolate
Jam, marmalade, Nutella etc

Other items needed are toothpaste, soap, Sanpro and deodorant. But, I always prioritise food when I donate.

It's not exciting but it'll keep body and soul together for 3/4 days.

Some nice ideas for family's are those cereal mini packs of different cereals, lunchbox packs of raisins, Crackers, Crisps etc

Thank you x

Thank you for the list. It is useful although as you said my local food bank collection point does have a list of suggestions.

At Christmas and Easter I always put some things in for treats for children, easter eggs or selection boxes or a bit earlier Advent calendars. Do foodbanks think that is a waste of time, I just think kids need a bit of joy as well as food in their bellies.

I hope the things have been useful but I would like to know if i'm just being a silly old woman and should stick to more practical things.

Just to be clear I don't buy them instead of something sensible, I just buy a bit extra.

Frostie is giving JRM ideas

We have to put up with EU controls. But we don't have to replicate them ourselves. We should have a light-touch border to the whole world. That's a Brexit opportunity.

The EU believes in protectionism. We don't, and our controls should reflect our philosophy not theirs.

@ancientgran
Treats are great but sadly we are often inundated with chocolate and mince pies etc
They are often also short dated

Does Frost not realise that each country that is outside of the EU, the single market and customs union has import controls?

Isn't that a normal state of affairs?

I thought the guy was meant to be know about these things.

Honesty from a brexiter, well I never. Yes the EU believes in protectionism, protecting its business and citizens from cheap and dangerous imports. The UK government don't. Hormone treated beef anyone? Toys that are unsafe? Any old shit other countries won't allow in? Bring it all on.

Particularly odd, given that many of the EU standards originated in the UK in the first place.

Thanks for that. I won't do that then if there is plenty of chocolate (can you tell I'm a chocoholic?) I'll just do the basics. I wonder why they are short dated?

Sorry to keep asking, I just wondered if there are any treats for these occasions that would be useful or should I just forget it and put a few extra bits of the normal stuff?

I suppose what I'm thinking about is if there is a group that gets forgotten?

Opal8 · 09/02/2022 12:34

Easter eggs, mincepues etc are generally short dated

We get A LOT of out of date items too :(

It's nice to buy chocolate at Xmas but generally if donors want to buy "treat" items I advise them to buy things like lunchbox fillers, Cereal selection packs, maybe nesquik or similar

OP posts:
Opal8 · 09/02/2022 12:34

....the most out of date item we ever recieved was dated 1991....

The food bank that I donate to regularly puts out updates of what they need and what they are well stocked with.

Thanks for the information. If we are giving we might as well give the right things.

We do normally give to the Salvation Army Christmas Toy Appeal, not sure if it national or just our local branch but I like to think that is help to give some joy to a child/children.

HannibalHeyes · 09/02/2022 13:17

Particularly odd, given that many of the EU standards originated in the UK in the first place.

But but but ... the Brexshittiers were adamant that Brexshit would be wonderful because we could improve on EU standards!

See also shit in rivers etc...

TheElementsSong · 09/02/2022 13:42

Our local food bank collection group sends updates of things they're in urgent need of. I also put treats in at festive times (and I check to make sure everything I donate is in-date).

purplesequins · 09/02/2022 13:46

when we cleared my uncles flat (rip) we found lots of out of date tins - and plenty in date too.

a soup kitchen was happy to take those as lkng as the tins were not dented. the foodbank got anything in date.

prettybird · 09/02/2022 15:29

Opal8 · 09/02/2022 17:06

Oh!
And can I suggest cans with pull openers?
Many clients don't have tin openers
Pot noodles/savoury pots are handy as they only need hot water
Thank you :)

Hmmm
MET "reassessing" decision not to investigate party De Pfeffle definitely didn't attend...

I think Eton/Oxbridge may need to start providing courses on how to discern whether they are attending a party or not....
