Dh and I have been trying to work out how much more we'll be paying this year for NI, food and energy.

We reckon £3k.

We can (just about) afford it. But we've reduced the virgin package, the heating will get turned off in a couple of weeks and there won't be many "treats".

If you are already counting every penny, how will you afford it? If you are already in debt how will you afford it?

It's gonna be rough.

New Tory Slogan

"Heat or eat!"

it's worth reminding ourselves that Nadine "should I get my shotgun ?" Dorries is one of the more lucid brexiteers around

We are all doomed…

We well and truly are, I have tried to hold onto a small vestige of hope over the last few years that some sense would prevail clearly I am totally deluded & Nadine Dorries has pushed me over the edge these last few days. We are going to hell in a handcart. Sadly “heat or eat” will many peoples reality.

Yep.
Foodbank will be busy.
Luckily I've secured a new store.

I’m glad you have Opal but sad that’s what will desperately be needed by I would imagine so many more people than even last year.
Opal8 · 05/02/2022 18:57

Yeah
I'm concerned tbh
During the 1st lockdown our usage went up tenfold

In some ways foodbanks are a sticking plaster helping maintain order. Imagine what would happen if they didn't exist?

DGRossetti · 05/02/2022 19:10

As an indicator of things to come, we've put some home improvements on hold. About £5Ks worth that a local firm quoted for.

Not sure how many people following suit would be enough to push the already stretched small businesses over the edge, but I suspect it will be a non trivial number.

I'm well aware.

But no one in my community will go hungry if I can help it.

There is a very good argument to be made that charity - or the need for it - is a failure of society.

At least the minted Victorians had a strong protestant ethic of helping others. (In the case of wealthy women it was enforced as a product of their exclusion from society).

This lot ? They'd keep a drowning man under to rifle his pockets.

We've done quite a bit this year (£18k) but it was stuff that desperately needed doing.

The kitchen needs updating but it'll wait.

Praying the boiler lasts a couple more years

In 2010 there were 400 Trussell Trust foodbanks

In 2022 there are over 4000

The austerity of the Coalition and 2015 tory govt has another to answer for

I suppose my main concern is that with the increase in food prices - even the basics that foodbanks ask for - people won't be able to donate.

No donations, no foodbank.

That’s my worry as well, I donate regularly but tbh I won’t be able to do as much.
HappyWinter · 05/02/2022 20:17

Congratulations on the new job, DGR.

It feels bleak at the moment, a lot of people are going to struggle, everything is getting so expensive. Some items on my food shop have gone up 20% and energy bill has doubled in a few years, how can people absorb that if they are at the limit already? We're ok but it's going to be tough for many. It's bad enough as it is, horrifying to think it will get worse.

I can't believe Boris is still here. There's a headline every day and still no shame, he doesn't have any.

HannibalHeyes · 05/02/2022 22:19

And what is going under the radar is that all the changes to NI, Tax, IR35, obviously Brexshit and exporting/importing costs etc. etc., are killing small businesses.

Nobody notices when one small business goes under.

When thousands go under, there's not much left...

borntobequiet · 06/02/2022 07:42

When Johnson said Fuck Business, he meant all business. I mean, why the CP didn’t drop him there and then is astonishing. What is it with people that they just don’t listen?

Peregrina · 06/02/2022 07:59

Fuck Business is one of the only things he has said which is true. As also Brexit being a Titanic success.

borntobequiet · 06/02/2022 09:06

Peregrina I’ve just read Fall the bio of Robert Maxwell and thought of you as I think you worked for Pergamon in the 1970s? It must have been very interesting. He was clearly an immensely talented and immensely flawed man. The book is eye-opening (and very funny in places. The British Establishment is pure comedy in many ways).

Was there not a persistent rumour he was an ex-SS member who used the allieds terror of communism to sneak into the west ? With a list of atrocities to his name ?
Peregrina · 06/02/2022 12:00

I did work for Pergamon, for a short while. Thankfully I didn't have much to do with him. He was not a nice man, he would come and give managers a bollocking in front of their staff and humiliate them. But the work itself was interesting, and I got a decent promotion in the time I was there.

There’s been stories of No 11 blocking No 10’s plans to tackle NHS backlog and waiting times. Apparently people’s lives and health doesn’t constitute ‘value for money’ in Sunak’s eyes. Followed by Dishi saying that the Tory Party has always been "the party of sound money" and that’s the only party that he’s interested in 🤮 but I think he’s left a bit out there. Surely what he means is that the Tory Party is the party of taxpayers money that’s being handed out to Tory donors and MP’s mates and families? And that as long as someone is getting rich off taxpayers money that does constitute value in Tory Party eyes.
