Hi,

Longtime lurker and poster (under various nn) on Westminstenders and these threads.

I'm afraid the other thread op pissed me off a lot so here's another option for those of us that want one.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and good luck for 2022.
People who are British citizens but were not born British can now be made stateless and not even told about it, apparently, and past illegal behaviour by the government in this context will be deemed legal. I hate to think what they plan to do with these powers:
www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/priti-patel-s-new-powers-to-remove-citizenship-would-turn-ethnic-minority-brits-into-second-class-citizens/ar-AARzfWb?ocid=msedgntp
this one will be a biggie I suspect.
especially for those who a 'newly' british. or those where the children are british due to being born to a long term resident. i.e. many europeans that live(d) in the UK for a good few years (5 years iirc).

My very Tory BiL calmly insisted to me that free at point of need was a broken system and ‘too expensive’

That's what always bugs me when people say that the NHS system is "too expensive". The costs don't go away if it were privatised: they just get transferred onto individuals with or without insurance Confused - only now with a profit margin added on top Angry What do they expect to happen to the "costs" to make them lower - that people just don't get treated? Hmm And that's even before you factor in the extra/unnecessary tests that medics are incentivised to do (and charge for) to increase their own profits (my dad, as a medic himself, has seen that happening with relatives' treatment in the US and South Africa).

But like Brexit, those that are in a position to benefit from the privatisation don't care about the "little" people Sad

My dad, at 84 (85 in a couple of weeks Xmas Smile) is at the point of considering self-insuring for his travels abroad. When he can next go to South Africa, he would go for longer than the single trip limit - and anyway, insurance quotes are over £3,000 Shock He's prepared to use his GEHIC card for cover in France and because he can afford it put aside a large amount of money in case he fell ill (or died! Sad) in South Africa. He's not bothered about flight or possessions insurance. I'm twitchy about it but respect his choices. But that is someone who has significant savings and recognises his privilege - and during Lockdown has seen his savings increase as he can't spend his income gallivanting Wink Most people are not that fortunate Sad

Contrast this forward thinking and preparation, including funds, to the support given by WM to, say, Cornwall Hmm

@Opal8

...they have an 80 seat majority and no opposition to speak of...

They can - and will - do whatever they want

Sorry but all you are doing is the Tory parties work for them.

Feeding the narrative that there is no alternative, so keep voting for the status quo.

Its not the Labour parties fault that the printed right wing media are leading on "boris to save xmas" instead of the disasters that are Afghanistan, NHS, Ambulance service or his lying over this party.

Europilgrim · 08/12/2021 09:01

Placemarking. I don't have a cat or a Christmas tree up but here are some festive decorations I saw last week!

@AndreaC67

...except that its the job of the opposition to present a viable alternative.

Labour IS NOT doing that. If Starmer et Al aren't 30 points up in the polls NOW they will never get into power

But as I've said before, I predict an early election, and labour or a coalition will win the next GE
The tories won't stick around once they've stripped the UK of its assets

Expect a stand in for PMQs?....

So we carefully studied the Nazi playbook, and finally are able to quantify how "British" you need to be to stay here. Paving the way for children to be born as crimes. Not criminals. Just crimes. With some on this thread almost unable to contain their excitement at the prospect of blond blue-eyed children flooding the land.

pointythings · 08/12/2021 09:32

This came up on my newsfeed. I don't always rate Brian Bilson, but he nails it here.

Painfully accurate, pointy.

The party story is not a deliberate distraction from something else. It really isn't. It's a disaster all of its very own.

No govt ministers on parade on news programmes this morning means either they cannot find a line to defend themselves. Or ministers are refusing to step up for Downing Street - which is a huge development if that's the case.

It'll be interesting to see how the Conservative benches look at PMQs - how many MPs will turn out to roar for Johnson? And who will pack around him on the front bench and just behind. Absence will speak as loudly as being present.

*

One thing about the Allegra Stratton video is how the whole context of the discussion is 'what lie do we tell? what excuse can we get away with?'.

They know what happened was wrong. None of the chat is around correcting, apologising or trying to put right. It's all focused on 'how do we get away with this?'. It's very revealing of the mindset in No.10.

Perhaps most here would assume that to be the attitude and the way things work - but it's interesting to see it played out before your eyes. It confirms for me how utterly entitled they feel - so much so they are not even aware of it.

They genuinely do not seem to register that trying to get away with doing wrong things is wrong. Totally relaxed about it, like it's the most natural thing in the world.

Exactly

UltimateFoole · 08/12/2021 11:11

Plan B measures for Covid control reportedly to be introduced (FT reporting). There's your distraction story.

Disgusting.

DuncinToffee · 08/12/2021 11:16

Sky News reporting the same

DGRossetti · 08/12/2021 11:16

If you think Johnson is on his way out, you would steer well clear of getting tainted by association if you wanted a shot at being PM.

Also, after the mauling Kit Malthouse got on R4 with zero support from Der Fuhrer, I can't see anyone apart from the terminally dim breaking ranks.

As a Tory MP noted on R4 Today - basically any future lockdowns are now voluntary. No matter what the law.

No wonder Cummings was so brazen about Barnard Castle - he must have known it would eventually pale into insignificance.

DuncinToffee · 08/12/2021 11:19

After 16 years as chancellor, Angela Merkel hands over to Scholz today

Disgusting.

Entirely voluntary now.
AuldAlliance · 08/12/2021 11:27

Was Allegra Stratton pissed in that video, or is she always so skittish and giggly?
I've not seen her much, but can't quite believe it's a guilty conscience making her flop around and titter that way.

AuldAlliance · 08/12/2021 11:28

Or had she been sniffing the loo seats at Westminster?

Opal8 · 08/12/2021 11:40

Plenty of Colombian marching powder readily available in Westminster....

How on earth can they instigate plan b? Or is it that now they know no one will adhere to it?

"They genuinely do not seem to register that trying to get away with doing wrong things is wrong. Totally relaxed about it, like it's the most natural thing in the world."

Ultimate I worked for someone exactly like that (I called him John the Bastard). I explained to my line manager why I was uncomfortable being asked to take certain actions, and she gently persuaded me to doing them, as she knew the top man would support JtB and any objections would backfire on me (and, crucially, her). It's one of the reasons I retired when I did. Principles can be a burden!

DoctorTwo · 08/12/2021 12:38

Of all the shit things that could have toppled our corrupt government down it would be fucking hilarious if it was a party. Fucking useless bunch of wankers.

It appears they can't even organise a party...
AuldAlliance · 08/12/2021 12:54

DuncinToffee · 08/12/2021 12:59

Oh come on now, whatever happened..... err or didn't happen, was last year, Labour is playing politics, Vaccines!
