The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

We need to know which Tories rebelled or more to the point, which ones dutifully voted as they were told, regardless of whether they thought it the correct thing to do.

Interesting times. I wonder if COVID covered things for Johnson. Once he had been convinced to at least take it seriously and poor decision making at number ten was at least moderated by advice, there was just the one ( albeit major) thing to screw up.

Now his manifest flaws are becoming even more visible on multiple fronts, on straightforward issues hard to spin or distract from. ( sleaze, care financing for the less well off etc.)

DrBlackbird · 23/11/2021 08:10

Not sure if someone else covered this but interesting that Paul Dacre has returned to the Daily Mail publisher as editor-in-chief of the newspaper’s parent company. So Johnson has given up the fight to make him head of Ofcom and realised / decided he needed the DM back on side. Just so interesting to actually see how it works IRT as it were. Political and economic elites working closely together to try to manage the narrative for voters.

Peregrina · 23/11/2021 08:33

List of how MPs voted on Social Care Funding

The abstentions are also interesting - there are names that I wouldn't expect to see there.

@HannibalHayeski

More giggles...
If BlowJohnson is providing his own squirrels pigs now, does that mean our resident C&Per is out of a job?
HannibalHayeski · 23/11/2021 08:45

Well, Comical Clavi's whataboutery has been conspicuous by it's absence for a while...

DuncinToffee · 23/11/2021 09:20

Snapshot of how the Tories voted (from Best for Britain)

Worth noting only 13 of the 68 abstentions were paired. It looks like there were 30 full abstainers.

Pmk. Although the obvious reason behind this bumbling mess yesterday is to distract from the bills being voted through... but part of me thinks maybe he’s just had enough of being PM and wants to go. Too much like hard work.

Peregrina · 23/11/2021 09:32

Well, it's good to see some Tories at least trying to re-discover where they left their consciences. The trouble is that now they have begun to dig them out, they find that they are rusty, or have parts missing and don't work properly.

borntobequiet · 23/11/2021 09:42

That’s an interesting mix of Tory non-voters, and if allied against BJ, possibly very dangerous for him.

I’m not sure that the likes of Christopher Chope, Mark Francois, IDS and Peter Bone could muster up a full conscience between them!
KonTikki · 23/11/2021 09:58

I would add "Smug" and "Loathsome" to that list of reprobates.

Peregrina · 23/11/2021 10:17

No one is even thinking that Loathsome and Smug were searching for their consciences - they duly voted For as good little Johnson sycophants.

I agree - the others would have difficult in finding a conscience - so what was in an abstention for them?

pointythings · 23/11/2021 10:51

My spineless MP (Hatt Mancock) voted for. Of course.

Peregrina · 23/11/2021 15:58

So can we take it that Boris Johnson is unwell and has lost his grip?

HannibalHayeski · 23/11/2021 16:30

Is this the new Jeffrey Bernard?
pointythings · 23/11/2021 16:37

I reckon he was 'tired and emotional' as the euphemism goes.

prettybird · 23/11/2021 16:51

Or to re-purpose Doctor Who's query about Harriet Jones, "Doesn't he look tired,?" Wink

It's very telling that the satirical stories no longer seem satirical as they're too close to the bone SadAngry

Worth noting: the new import/export regulations with the EU aren't even in force yet

Jan 2022 looks like fun.

DuncinToffee · 24/11/2021 18:05

At least 30 people have died trying to cross the English Channel this afternoon Sad

Peregrina · 24/11/2021 20:10

That will bring out the absolute worst in Priti Patel and Nigel Farage.

What we need is a legitimate route for people to come. Not that either of the two above or a significant number of Brexit voters will agree to that.

He can't have lost his grip.

He never had any.

HannibalHayeski · 25/11/2021 08:40

Cutting from Angus MacNeil;

“The numbers the Government provides at the moment are for every £400 or £490 of Brexit costs, the New Zealand trade deal will make back a pound, so I look forward to getting those figures when you have them”
