The old thread is nearly full so as COP26 is in my home town, I thought I'd start the next one.

I'm not expecting anything wonderful from COP26. The selfishness that is Brexit will extend to the rich nations - or rather corporations, countries and cronies - not wanting to do anything that might actually cost them money or hurt their profits and having made their money on the back of the resources of the poorer nations (in some cases quite literally Sad), they'll expect them to pay the price for the riches of the West.

The deliberate mistranslation of France's letter to the EU will distract from real issues - but that's ok for BJ as he can then blame the perfidious French.

Nothing changes.

I’m still sad that we all have to suffer for the choices some people have made. It’s clearly obvious many didn’t know what they have voted for. I was cautiously optimistic because Brexiters seemed so confident that I just hoped that I was wrong. This article on tariffs just made me think of all the other things Boris failed to deliver with his Brexit promises, mistruths and convoluted lies.

I’m also curious whether the vast majority people of Cornwall will still vote leave? I kept on wondering what would happen now that they’d now longer receive EU subsidies once the referendum results came out and not a single Brexiter had addressed it. I stopped wondering because only a few months ago it was revealed that Cornwall will receive a few million pounds to replace the £100 million EU funding. I wish the people in Cornwall knew what they were really voting for. Would they have still voted that way? If Remain had actually risen above the claims of scaremongering by by Brexit campaign who were just selling hopes and dreams and they had actually put up billboards to counter Farage et al, would that have made a difference? If the eel farmers knew what their vote really meant, would they have still voted in favour of Brexit? Ultimately knowledge is key. And I have started to realise the vast majority of the people who voted for Brexit truly lack critical analysis skills. And yet I don’t blame them for their naïveté, I don’t blame them for their decisions because we all still have to suffer the consequences. The power of hindsight is a powerful thing.

Clearly in next 10 years if it continues like this, if another party does win or if there is a coalition, they will just be spending the time patching up all the mistakes by our current abysmal one.

There were many people who could not have voted in the Referendum because they were simply too young. I do think we should have another referendum but this time make sure everyone receives factual information on what they are actually voting for. The results were too close to call for a victory. This wasn’t our first referendum and I certainly hope that it’s not the last.

There was plenty of information out there at the time. Whether that was easily understandable and digestable to everyone or whether everyone was even interested in hearing it is another question, but the downsides were all discussed. That's why we got "project fear" bandied around and told we had had "enough of experts". But let's not pretend people weren't warned. They were. They chose to ignore it, for whatever reason.

jgw you should be ashamed of your taunting tone to someone whose partner is struggling with a wheelchair that doesn’t work.
Not really. I am sure there are plenty of shoppers who are grateful to have one less obstruction to deal with.

I wonder if destiny has decide to re-run the 1970s only with a Tory government ?

DGRossetti · 17/11/2021 07:48

Interesting.

I find myself thinking very little about Cornwall and it's peoples plight. For getting exactly what they voted for.

In fact, I have already probably given the people of Cornwall more thought in typing this than they ever gave me when they voted.

If I was taunting anyone it is Brexiteers who have created this situation.

Well yes. Because by doing so they can dodge tax and happily avoid environmental standards. And the UK government is giving them a nice financial bung too, what's not to like?

"jgw you should be ashamed of your taunting tone to someone whose partner is struggling with a wheelchair that doesn’t work."

"If I was taunting anyone it is Brexiteers who have created this situation."

I dont think jgw was taunting DGR's OH, rather she/he mistakenly took it as the spare parts were supposed to be sourced from Europe and in her usual ironic vein was slating Brexit.

Amazon to stop allowing people to use Visa credit cards from January, another Brexit bonus?

Visa is increasing transaction rates now the EU cap no longer applies.

Actually people stopping using both Visa and Amazon would be a very good thing, so this one is genuinely a Brexit bonus.

The Tories were in power for half of the decade. Of course, Ted Heath's brand of Conservatism, wasn't real Conservatism because he took us into the EEC. So obviously, that part of the decade has to be expunged from the history books.

But he did play the organ.

True but I can't see it happen.

(My bank just replaced visa with mastercard)

Lindsay Hoyle finally had enough

"Sit down... you may be the prime minister of this country, but in this House, I'm in charge"

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle tells Boris Johnson "it's not 'Leader of the Opposition's Questions'"

HannibalHayeski · 17/11/2021 13:45

Oh FFS, bloody Nadir Dorries is trying to claim credit for the work of LIVE and the Association for British Orchestras (ABO), alongside their Spanish counterparts Asociación Promotores Musicales and key industry players such as Live Nation Spain, in getting an agreement that musicians won't need visas for short term tours.

And if it's such a good thing, why did she vote to fuck it all up in the first place?

Muppet...

pointythings · 17/11/2021 13:46

Hannibal stop insulting the Muppets. They are a functional group of decent beings who cope well with life and don't go around fucking up everything they touch. Unlike our government.
Kermit for PM!

My own view on the parliamentary standards issue is that I don’t think most current Tory MPs should be allowed to have jobs as MPs.

jgw Sorry. I owe you an apology. I think I read your post badly.

HannibalHayeski · 17/11/2021 14:11

Oh, but I forgot. All the Quitlings that come on here think that the arts are some kind of "elite" nonsense and shouldn't be encouraged...
