This guy thinks it's a good thing:

Got his arse well and truly handed to him on a Twitter plate, though.

borntobequiet · 25/10/2021 18:17

Now what exactly does a Remainy demographic look like?

Youngish, middle class, educated professional looking/sounding, grumpy. Older, middle class same. Sometime travelling as large family group.

FatCatThinCat · 25/10/2021 18:27
@FatCatThinCat : part of it is because NZ is an underpopulated (relatively speaking) country compared to the UK, so they are able to "farm" sheep more intensively (or rather, over a greater arable area) that the UK, where sheep farmers tend to be hill farmers on more "marginal" land.

The UK farmers would say that the slower growing lambs from here are tastier - but it does mean that they are inevitably more expensive weight for weight.
That sounds believable but I googled it and the UK has 7 million hectares that it uses for non arable farming and New Zealand has 8.5 million hectares.

And the main breed of sheep in New Zealand is the Romney which is an English breed. So that won't account for the difference either.

Are our farmers just a bit crap at farming?

prettybird · 25/10/2021 19:06

Population of the Uk: 67 million
Population of NZ: 5 million.

That's a lot of excess lamb (and beef and dairy) Wink

FatCatThinCat · 25/10/2021 21:34

But producing more than you need just means you have more to sell. It doesn't explain the price difference per unit.

Peregrina · 25/10/2021 22:44

This is from thick as mince David Davis. Not often I agree with him, but what's the betting that when it comes down to it, he will toe the party line?

julieca · 26/10/2021 01:11

No sheep farmers in the UK farm intensively. Land in the UK is expensive. So farmers in the UK have more sheep on less land and care for them. So help them with lambing, treat diseases, etc.
Land is much cheaper in NZ. So farmers have large flocks of sheep turned out to more or less look after themselves. You need far less staff with this approach and accept higher mortality rates.

mathanxiety · 26/10/2021 04:17

NZ farmers have bred native crosses to suit the terrain and climate better than the original imported breeds, and also to eliminate health problems notable in certain breeds. The Romney is an English breed - the NZ Romney has been a separate breed since the early 1900s.

It’s the height of concern when a Tory MP like Davis of all people is warning us about intended legislation.

Plus, that legislation seems very personal.

A ‘you can’t tell me what to do’ response connected to a certain person’s illegal prorogation of parliament? IMO a sociopath would have the same reaction to having their will thwarted and to being publicly humiliated.

Maybe Eddie Mair was right…

More on the raw sewage

I noted that the Lord's Amendment which the Tories voted down was introduced by that raging Leftie the Duke of Wellington!.

It's also notable that this hasn't been brought to the public's attention by the MSM - it's been a spontaneous protest.

prettybird · 26/10/2021 09:43

No - the MSM (I'm looking at you BBC) has been very slow in highlighting the concerns. Angry

It was only when they couldn't away with ignoring the public's furore that they started to include it in their reporting Hmm

Peregrina · 26/10/2021 11:48

A hope that another rule breaking Tory MP can be given the boot.

DuncinToffee · 26/10/2021 17:30

#PooTitlesForBoris is trending, the raw sewage issue is not going away anytime soon.

Brindle88 · 26/10/2021 17:58

Off to look up pootitlesforboris…

Brindle88 · 26/10/2021 18:06

That hashtag is so funny. Grin

Peregrina · 26/10/2021 18:06

It's being reported in the local paper that of the six Oxfordshire MPs the four Tories have duly voted to have our rivers and beaches polluted with sewage.

In the comments someone ,who is almost certainly a Brexit stalwart, is trying to blame the pandemic. He's not getting away with it though, but then this was a Remain area. Nor is the MP Robert Court (who replaced David Cameron). He apparently goes on and on about how Thames Water needs to clean up its act (literally), but when it comes to towing the party line, this is all forgotten.

Peregrina · 26/10/2021 18:08

But the Queen is not attending the COP26 summit. I don't know whether this is good or bad. I don't begrudge her not going though.

In my social media neck of the woods leavers accept that this is a consequence of brexit, however it's because remainers effectively forced the hardest of brexits on us. If remainers had been more accepting of the result and more willing to compromise we could have had a much softer brexit.

I've tried to follow the logic thread through their reasoning but I've got nothing, I can't do the mental gymnastics to work it out.

Having just heard of friends of DWs family who passed away Sunday (aged 86) just a few months after his wife passed, I am reminded of how many couples do seem to pass very close to each other.

It's just pure statistics that the older you are, the more likely you are to die. (Although I can see the BBC having to have someone on to argue against that for "balance".)

Anyway, it gave Putin the chance to quip (in Russian) that he dislikes attending such events as you never know who's going until you are there.

Brindle88 · 26/10/2021 19:45

@FatCatThinCat really?! Own your vote, it’s all on those who voted to leave.

The food shortages, food price inflation, companies moving to the EU, farmers and fishermen screwed, lack of water treatment chemicals etc were all foreseen.

This is on the leave voters and the Tory voters who believed Boris had an “oven ready” deal, and on them only.

Own it!

Own my vote? I would if I could but I didn't get one. I just get to suffer the consequences.

DuncinToffee · 26/10/2021 20:04

Looks like there is another u-turn, or is that u-bend turn

New legal duty promised over sewage as Lords forces issue

Brindle88 · 26/10/2021 20:16

I wonder how their u-turn solves the issue of the shortage of water treatment chemicals, which is a massive reason this kind of dumping has increased in recent years.

Is this all going to get swept under the carpet?

Brindle88 · 26/10/2021 20:20

I think it will be swept under the carpet as the mainstream media were not reporting this until the Twitter outrage. The BBC, as usual, very sympathetic to the government when they finally picked up the story, I thought.

Peregrina · 26/10/2021 21:08

I mustn't be too mischievous but just over two weeks ago Clavinova was making light of the sewage discharge situation. Where is she now to tell us that France, Netherlands and Belgium are also busy pouring filth into their waters?

The French must be so glad that they don't have to take fresh UK shellfish. Except of course, the filth is just as likely to end up on the French coast - despite what the Brexiters appear to think, there isn't a fence in the middle of the channel.
