Enjoying the irony of that article mentioning the possibility that UK citizens who own property in Spain might ask the awful, unwanted ECHR to defend their rights.

"The UK Government should take the issue of the property owners’ human rights affected by Schengen to the Spanish Government.

The UK government has fuck all interest in the human rights of UK citizens in the UK - why the fuck should they give a fetid dingoes kidney about some whinging foreign immigrants ex pats ?

I did like the tone of the article though. If you are thick as pig shit (which would be a prerequisite for reading the Express, let alone believing it) then you could be forgiven for thinking that they actually had some power over Boris. The way they were telling him what he will have to do ....

borntobequiet · 25/10/2021 07:35

In Portugal for a few days - just under a year since I got away to Madeira a couple of days before we locked down last November. Was very glad of Irish passport as 200+ people (British/English, many with young children) trying to get through the two “other” immigration lanes and about 20 through the one EU lane. Felt like a bit if a cheat but…
The general demographic of the passengers looked pretty Remainy to me. And very pissed off. My very nice Pakistani taxi driver was scathing in his judgement of the UK government. I’ll look out for supermarket shortages on the Algarve.

Peregrina · 25/10/2021 08:25

Now what exactly does a Remainy demographic look like?
When you think that Gove and Rees-Mogg were Leave, it can't be assumed that all Leavers are fat, middle aged/elderly men with beer guts. That is the stereotype the BBC likes to show.

We can't assume that looking pissed off is a Remainy look, because as we have seen the immigrants in Spain are also cheesed off with the situation and are demanding that their pal Boris does something for them. To be fair here, they may not have had a vote if they had been away for more than 15 years.

You mean ex pats

DuncinToffee · 25/10/2021 10:49

I would assume that leave voters would look more pissed off as they believed nothing would change other than the colour of their passport.

Enjoy your break borntobequiet

I have seen a lot of outrage about the raw sewage dump on social media but not much is reported in mainstream media

Peregrina · 25/10/2021 11:00

A list of those Tory MPs who voted for our rivers to be contaminated with sewage.

Peregrina · 25/10/2021 11:04

To be fair, not all Tory MPs want to see our waters contaminated with sewage.

DuncinToffee · 25/10/2021 11:09

I saw that list, our MP isn't on it for a change.

The view from NZ of our wonderful trade deal...Hmm

I think there was some discussion on the Today programme about the sewage shitshow - BBC are very late to this, however.

Peregrina · 25/10/2021 12:30

I just despair about the NZ deal. As someone says on the twitter thread - the supermarkets will drive the prices down so that British produces won't be able to compete. The Brexiters will then scream about opportunities to export lamb to the USA - not a country noted for its consumption of lamb.

DGRossetti · 25/10/2021 13:29

There's no reason the UK should stick to the NZ deal though.

DuncinToffee · 25/10/2021 13:35

It's still an "agreement in principle" isn't it so could easily go the 'Australia deal' way.

This is the modern way, isn't it ? A fanfare headline becomes "the truth" and any subsequent amendments are quietly forgotten. A tactic used by everybody now.

Timely reminder of the UK - Japan deal

www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/liz-truss-accused-by-emily-thornberry-of-lying-about-uk-japan-trade-deal-297928

RunningOnFumes · 25/10/2021 14:55

I keep thinking too about the climate implications of these deals...shipping lamb/produce thousands of miles... I think I read somewhere that one of the govt's climate advisers had been very critical of the deal - perhaps it will just quietly fade away!
Interesting comments on the Japan deal - there is a good thread about this, gist of which is that UK has failed to secure any additional protections, whereas EU has quietly got on with registering 28 additional names for protection twitter.com/CoppetainPU/status/1451847621384052737?s=20

Remind me again why we are now better off? Hmm Hmm

FatCatThinCat · 25/10/2021 15:03

I'm genuinely confused about the NZ lamb vs British lamb issue. How are NZ producing lamb, shipping it to the other side of the world, and still being able to price locally produced lamb out of the market while making a profit for themselves?

DGRossetti · 25/10/2021 15:18

Also how long before other countries "Do a Morocco" and turn away UK visitors ?

prettybird · 25/10/2021 15:28

@FatCatThinCat : part of it is because NZ is an underpopulated (relatively speaking) country compared to the UK, so they are able to "farm" sheep more intensively (or rather, over a greater arable area) that the UK, where sheep farmers tend to be hill farmers on more "marginal" land.

The UK farmers would say that the slower growing lambs from here are tastier - but it does mean that they are inevitably more expensive weight for weight.

Peregrina · 25/10/2021 16:23

tax breaks for ships flying the union jack.

Now I was under the impression that much of our shipping had been re-registered in places like Liberia. Nothing to do with getting round UK Labour laws of course. I wonder whether this bung will be enough to bring them back.

HesterAndPearlInBrightSunshine · 25/10/2021 16:36

What truly depresses me is that Brexit has turned into some kind of chronic disease, or a perpetual natural disaster we somehow need to cope with and no end in sight. No one likes it. No one wants it anymore. No one believes we're better off and yet it's somehow a law of the universe for us here now. Immutable.
Shoot me now.
