Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

they must think know Brexitters are stupid or something!

I feel confident that JRM knew exactly what would happen to the UK after Brexit but did not give one shiny toss for the nation as a whole. He has been working towards this for 30 years. First to reclaim The Empire, latterly probably realised there were nice economic gains for him and his ilk.

Fixed that one sentence for you…

Households and businesses in Italy will soon be paying more for electricity and gas with another steep price rise coming at the start of the third quarter, despite government measures to limit the increase.

Household electricity bills will rise by 29.8% for the typical family and gas bills will go up by 14.4%, Italy’s energy regulatory authority Arera confirmed in a press release on Tuesday evening.

The new national tariffs come in from Friday, at the start of the fourth quarter of 2021 (October-December).

The increase comes amid surging energy costs across Europe, and beyond.

The price rise passed on to Italian consumers could’ve reached 45 percent, Arera said, if the government had not stepped in to cap the new rise in rates.

I don't have the time or the inclination to post much tonight (or over the weekend - going away) but spotted this today;

UK growth revised up to 5.5% amid higher NHS spending and exports rise.

Higher NHS spending, stronger investment and a bounce back in exports helped the UK economy to recover more quickly from the lockdown at the start of the year, official figures have shown.

After shrinking by 1.4% in the first three months of the year, the economy grew by a record 5.5% in the second quarter as restrictions on activity were eased.

The Office for National Statistics said the contraction in the first quarter was smaller than the 1.6% previously estimated while growth in the second quarter was revised up from 4.8%.

Export growth in the second quarter was revised up from 4% to 6.2% while imports were revised down from 6.5% to 2.4%. Trade contributed 1.0 percentage points to the UK’s growth in the second quarter rather than subtracting 0.7 points as originally thought.

Ooh, more deliveries of 🐿🐿🐿! So kind! Perhaps in addition to eating them, we can burn them for fuel!

HannibalHayeski · 30/09/2021 20:01

Given that the UK's negative growth in 2020 was staggeringly apalling and easily considerably worse than any EU countries, a modest amount of growth is not as much of a celebration as Comical Clavi would have us believe...

Clavinova · 30/09/2021 20:06

The upgrade to growth meant gross domestic product was 3.3% below its level in the final three months of 2019 – the last period before the UK was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The shortfall from the pre-virus peak was identical to that in Germany, similar to the 3.2% in France, and smaller than the 3.8% shortfall in Italy

I don't have the time or the inclination to post much tonight (or over the weekend - going away) but spotted this today;

You do realise that about HALF the space on this page now consists of your carpet bombing.

Why don’t you start your own thread?

AuldAlliance · 30/09/2021 20:23

Gas and electricity prices are rising everywhere.

The French gvmt announced on Sept 16th that beneficiaries of its 'energy cheque' policy would all get an extra 100e cheque in Sept to help deal with the price increases.
People who qualify for the energy cheque receive on average 200e/year to help pay their gas/electric bills or for work carried out to make their homes more energy efficient. To be eligible, your energy bills must represent 10% or more of your household budget.

Perhaps Westminster will reveal plans for a similar policy soon.

(Apologies if this counts as an écureuil énergétique.)

prettybird · 30/09/2021 20:26

"Space" does not equal "being read" and does not equal "contributing anything of value" Wink

at least, I presume that from the comments of those who can be bothered wasting the time reading the squirrel's comments

prettybird · 30/09/2021 20:29

@AuldAlliance - that doesn't count as an energetic squirrel Wink You're pointing out something positive Grin

Oh, I do have time for you. You posted this yesterday as well;

I do wish Clav would take up less thread real estate with massive quotes.

  • posted directly after great chunks of c&p from mathanxiety, not me - not to mention vera99's ridiculously long article from Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant at 14:03 today.

Why don’t you start your own thread?

Tough luck - this isn't a private member's club and I like to pop in from time to time.

TheElementsSong · 30/09/2021 20:40

Maybe it's actually a really long cry for help using the medium of semaphore squirrels 🐿🐿🐿

@Brindle88

Regarding Mebyon Kernow I voted for our local candidate to be a councillor. Mainly because they campaign for more social homes. Also because he was the only one who had a chance of beating the Tory, which he did. MK also backed remain…
Dick Cole by any chance?

IMO a thoroughly decent chap who actually gives a damn about helping local people.

vera99 · 30/09/2021 20:44

One more. For someone who doesn't read any of my posts you spend a lot of time posting comments about me - quite bizarre really.

Peregrina · 30/09/2021 20:49

But vera99 has contributed one long article, which since few of us will be able to read Dutch saves us the bother of putting it through google translate. This is not the same as posting wodge after wodge of pointless cut and pastes on thread after thread to show how other countries have areas where they are failing or could do better.

prettybird · 30/09/2021 20:57

I found @vera99's long C&P of the Dutch article very interesting. I find it difficult to use Google translate on the phone so it was good to be able to read it (and notice the quirks in automatic translation Wink).

It's interesting that it hasn't had the same coverage in the UK (couldn't imagine why Hmm)

French articles I enjoy reading in the original, to keep my French going Smile

Boohoo's profits plunge thanks to post-Brexit rules and shipping costs - despite near £1bn revenue

In a statement to the London Stock Exchange, Boohoo said the hit to its profits included increased shipping costs, which were £26m higher than pre-pandemic levels.

The group also confirmed that the new rules following Brexit also saw profit margins reduce from 57.8% to 53.6% because of the extra checks required at customs.

...Boohoo indeed.

vera99 · 30/09/2021 21:10

I'm on a desktop so it;'s much easier to do the techy stuff. Find phones a bit too difficult for my 60-year-old fingers. Thanks for the thanks. I have ways around paywalls as well PM me if you want the dope. If I post about it it sets off MN alarms!
