Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

Dutch paper this morning big article on EU coalition formed to implement UK sanctions due to Irish border agreement non compliance. Also France may limit energy flow to UK due to non compliance with agreed fishing boat access.

Grist for the mill though. I can see the headlines now NASTY EU BULLIES UK.

I was woken up to Rule Britannia playing on my local radio this morning. In Sweden! The presenters were pissing themselves about the UK leaving the EU and now having shortages of fizzy pop, fuel and ... CLOWNS. I wanted to ring in to correct them, that britain is experiencing shortages but the one thing we have an excess of is fucking clowns.

vera99 · 30/09/2021 14:57

Not true there is a shortage in Northern Ireland but as they still have FOM (don't they) then they may be able to recruit from the EU. To be fair it might just not be covid/Brexit but a demonisation of them in the horror genre. Grin

@DuncinToffee

To be fair, he also said he was 'open minded' about allowing asylum seekers to work as part of efforts to solve the labour market shortages.
But isn’t that one of the British remarks that mean exactly the opposite, like “I hear you” “That’s interesting” and “I’ll certainly consider that”.

UK electricity prices still very VERY high.
But worth noting UK is no longer the main outlier…just look at Italy.
A reminder that contrary to those who claimed this was all about Brexit, it’s got far more to do with soaring gas prices.

Day ahead electricity prices

GB 123.46 - 262.06
Italy 178.90 - 1250.00

Day ahead prices 15.00 - 15.30
Italy 337.77
Portugal 195.94
Spain 195.94
Hungary 191.99
Romania 191.99
Slovakia 191.99
Ireland 177.32
GB 177.01

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi on Thursday (23 September) announced measures worth three billion euros to keep gas and electricity bills down this winter as power prices soar across Europe.

He told the Confindustria employers association the measures would particularly target the poorest and most vulnerable.

“In the absence of government intervention, in the next quarter the price of electricity could increase by around 40%, and that of gas by 30%,” Draghi said.

“For this reason we have decided to eliminate for the last quarter of the year the system costs for gas for everyone, and for electricity for families and small companies.”

System costs are added to energy bills to cover measures such as incentives for renewable energy sources.

Ministers green-lighted the move at a cabinet meeting later Thursday.

Draghi said the government will also boost energy bonuses for the less-well off groups, in a package worth more than three billion euros, which followed €1.2 billion pledged in June.

The former European Central Bank chief said that many of the reasons for the energy price increases were temporary but called for long-term action, including at a European level, to address the problem, including through diversifying supplies.

the one thing we have an excess of is fucking clowns.

Sadly true. Shame we can’t export the lot of them, but who would want them? Even after veterinary checks.

Have we just had another delivery of "as long as somebody somewhere else is experiencing something that is less than ideal, therefore ToryBrexitannia is great! 🐿🐿🐿🐿"?

prettybird · 30/09/2021 16:13

Have we? Wink

vera99 · 30/09/2021 16:13

My local Shell garage (the one that had the knife pulled) out of petrol today and the Torygraph continues to pile pressure on our hapless drowning PM - only half in jest probably owing to that shortage of clowns.

"What with all the talk of lights going out, a three-day week and a Winter of Discontent, many people seem worried that we’re going back to the Seventies. But I really don’t think we are. After all, in the Seventies, people were at least still able to drive their cars. This is going to be more like the 1870s, with everyone having to travel everywhere by horse. Until, of course, we run out of grass to feed our horses with, thanks to an outbreak of panic mowing.

At any rate, our immediate future doesn’t exactly look dazzling. Fist-fights are breaking out at petrol pumps. In Scotland, the threat to Irn-Bru supplies now practically guarantees a vote for independence, if not a full-blown re-run of Bannockburn. And on Tuesday, in response to empty shelves in supermarkets, The Sun ran a full-page article urging its readers to eat mouldy food (Don’t despair – not all mouldy grub is inedible!). Next week: exclusive recipes for rat madras and squirrel stew."

2 years ago JRM talked about a 50-year timescale - but was quick off the mark when shifting his hedge fund HQ from London to Dublin and appointing his cronies to ministerial posts. It is so blatant, in your face looting they must think Brexitters are stupid or something!

To be fair - I filled up at lunchtime today (when I would usually have done - tank nearly empty and I was needing some stuff from Sainsbury's as opposed to just Lidl). No queues at all and the price was a penny per litre less than when I filled up a month ago Grin (inbetweentimes I'd filled in Aberdeen after taking ds up there and then visiting him on his 21st, as it's 3p/litre cheaper up there Wink)

I had enough confidence to go in to the big Sainsbury's, do my shop and then go and fill up - and had my choice of pumps as there was only one other car there Shock

LCP replied to Ed Conway with

For context, LCP Enact gets it's data from ENTSOE, who are sent it by the Italian TSO - Terna.
The day-ahead prices for Italy are published separately by region in the country.
The high prices seen on The Current are due to Italy SACODC (Sardinia/Corsica DC). t.co/XLBSJDeE3t

@vera99

Panic posting just in case ......

Ironically MN claimed my "I don't know what that posted twice" post hadn't posted and did I want to retry Hmm Fortunately I didn't believe it, so checked before re-trying and voila, there it was Grin

Now if only the app would tell you to retry those times you've written a really long post and it disappears into the ether when you press "post" Angry

vera99 · 30/09/2021 17:47

MN has been playing up today with timeouts and the like of course all down to Brexit! Smile

It's a race to the bottom apparently.

Clavinova, I think the point is that the UK keeps putting itself into even more difficult positions in very hard times. In other words, Brexit makes the UK more vulnerable when bad things happen, like energy prices rising.

dontcallmelen · 30/09/2021 18:11

vera99 yes the dot is for place marking or PMK which we used on westminenders threads can’t remember why now though.
I don’t contribute much as what I have to say is usually said much more succinctly by others, but these threads kept me sane & make me feel as though I’m not going completely mad, with the horror that has & continues unfolding around us.

Peregrina · 30/09/2021 18:17

Or you could wheel out the old Place Mat King .......

prettybird · 30/09/2021 18:24

PMK came from Place Mat King which was an Autocorrect for Place Marking. It then morphed amongst some of us to "Place Cat King" - hence the cat (and occasionally dog) pictures Grin

It's part of what makes the posters on here feel like real people and not bots and contributes to make us a wee community. Smile

Depending on how you access MN, some people find that a post (photo/PMK/.) is easier than accessing the bookmark function.
