Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

Having watched Kier Starmer's interview on Andrew Marr's show I'm wondering why there's any point voting Labour. No to common ownership of public services, you can't say 'only women have a cervix', he's putting the Trans agenda above women. It's all so dispiriting at a time that Labour should be well ahead thanks to the Tory Brexit shitshow. It's like he only opens his mouth so he has somewhere to put his feet.

borntobequiet · 26/09/2021 14:18

It's like he only opens his mouth so he has somewhere to put his feet.

Yes, sadly.

I can't even get my head around the fact that this is even a conversation that we're having now. WHY are we playing make believe? JK Rowling seems to have been the only person talking sense.
TipseyTorvey · 26/09/2021 16:13

I've just written a bit of a rant to my local Labour mp and councillor, basically saying if you can't support women's rights, and by that I mean acknowledgement of what a women is biologically then no vote. He'll probably come back as he has before with soft words around the situation being 'challenging' and 'delicate'. Good lord how did we get here where Labour, the workers party are now the party of nonsense with no ability to challenge the tories. Trouble with Angela R is, she also thinks being a woman is a feeling soo......

DGRossetti · 26/09/2021 16:34

Queues all over the place for fuel in SW Birmingham today. Not enough to gridlock the roads, but it was a little sticky trying to get by on the roads.

Mrs DGR and I took advantage of a beautiful autumn afternoon to visit Cannon Hill Park and bask in humanity for a couple of hours. As with so many public amenities ... use it or lose it.

Came across a stunning sculpture too - completely deserted, even though there were thousands in the park ... I particularly liked the amphitheatre feel to it ...

That is beautiful.

DGRossetti · 26/09/2021 17:12

@prettybird

That is beautiful.
It's actually a memorial to the victims of the 2015 attacks in Tunisia ... the serenity today would crush the scum that carried out the attacks.

If the Devil has all the best tunes, then Remainers have all the best memes ...

I suspect we could soon see Covid legislation being used to try to deal with the current meltdown in retail. If nothing else all these queues are like a mini festival for superspreaders ...

That's lovely DGR. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is also highly recommended.

On other matters: One of my best friends came round for dinner last night. She's 70 odd, and as it happens, a trans woman, having transititioned sometime in the 90s. Long before it became a thing, in other words.

Because she had a bit of a profile at the time, she was doorstepped by a snapper from one of the nationals part way through the transition process. Thankfully pre social media.

That was then. I asked her about the current trans agenda. She is horrified by it all, ( fussing about pronouns, put on a dress and you're a woman, etc etc) and says it's just insane and also diminishes her own profoundly difficult yet ultimately private experience.

She said despite what she went through, it was a personal thing she had to do. She feels there are far more pressing and important things facing our country and our planet, and all this marginal posturing is just a sideshow, a dangerous distraction.

Then we spent the rest of the evening talking a the fallout from Brexit, the woeful state of the Labour Party, and funny stuff my cats do.

Sadly and ironically though, I can see how the current agenda also undermines anyone genuinely needing to confront what she did and, oddly, trivialises it.

Love how Shapps is fiercely blaming RHA for petrol crisis. As if no one in the last 4 years was talking about the crap that would hit transport from Brexit. Least of all the RHA. Listeningquietly would have a thing or two to pass on about that.

I remember some senior members giving evidence to parliament a year or so ago and being surprised how polite they were being. It’s as though some people most of the Tory MPs are incapable of paying attention to any comment being reasonably made.

Anyhow, no petrol, literally no turkeys for Christmas, fewer but more expensive toys and our lot want to give visas that run out on Christmas Eve. And still our brexiteers stand firm in the righteousness of their beliefs… Hmm

Thread from Daniel Lambert. Lots of good replies. Yes, I know he's a pesky Remainer Wink but he's been describing the real-life problems for months Angry

fewer but more expensive toys

French DIY and toy shops increasingly affected by material shortages. A lack of raw materials means certain toys could be more expensive in the lead up to Christmas.

Swedish furniture giant Ikea [also] admits that 10% of its products are unavailable...

In France, mirrors, shelves, sofas, chairs, mattresses, kitchens and other small items are missing from the 34 shops around the country. ...

Ikea France would not comment on these shortages, for fear of creating a panic effect that could accentuate the problem.

Having watched Kier Starmer's interview on Andrew Marr's show I'm wondering why there's any point voting Labour.

I was listening to this on LBC last night;

LBC's Political Editor Theo Usherwood explains how he was forcibly removed from the Jewish Voice for Labour fringe event by Tony Greenstein - a man expelled from the Labour Party for "virulent anti-Semitism".
...

this was an event that was listed in the official fringe guide. Only a couple of hours earlier, I was listening to a debate about how Labour was going to adopt the final recommendations of the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

And yet here I was being kicked out of a fringe event just for doing my job. Perhaps, the clearest sign yet - to me at least - that the dark days of anti-Jewish racism in the Labour Party aren't yet behind it.

John McDonnell was there as well - not in the main text but listen to the interview;

That Brexit eh? Who would have thunk! Turns out that Project Fear was deludedly optimistic in retrospect. It's now Project Here smashing you in the face in every village, town and city of our country.

And far from the government owning it every day' spokesmen and women are wheeled out to deflect, lie and smear. Ministers look rattled and seem to have no idea of what to do or predict what crises will blow up next.

If we get to spring without power cuts then that will be a miracle, and if we don't have them then no doubt business will be heavily impacted with soaring unsustainable energy price rises to keep the home front lights and heating on.

From the comments section of the Daily Heil yesterday - that's the spirit!

"IF THERE ARE ANY SHORTAGES IN THE UK ITS BECAISE THE EU HAS BLOCKED THE PORTS TO TRY AND STARVE THE BRITISH PEOPLE. WE ARE STRONG. WE ARE BRAVE WE WILL NOT BE BEATEN"

Clav - unsustainable off-topic smears. But you don't care, do you... this is a Brexit thread just in case you have a problem reading. But I'll bite

1/2 We had an incident at JVL's fringe meeting involving an LBC journalist who was spotted at the back of the meeting using his phone to photograph members of the audience. The event was being live streamed and no one else had been given permission to film.
2/2 When asked to desist, he refused and was asked to leave. He was then escorted from the building by security. He was then spoken to by the meeting organisers was allowed to re-enter on the basis that he would not film.

It's now Project Here smashing you in the face in every village, town and city of our country.

You need to get out more - my local high street was lined with people sitting outside at pavement cafes enjoying the sunshine. Admittedly, dh did go out at 7am yesterday to get petrol (successfully!). Grin

prettybird · 27/09/2021 10:21

Anecdotal evidence from my db: but he was talking to my dad yesterday and even though he lives in deepest darkest rural South West France, which, as he puts it, is right at the end of the supply chain, they've seen no evidence of any shortages Hmm

I noticed again in Lidl on Saturday that the shelves of water, cordials and long life juices (Tetrapaks) are still empty Sad From what i can gather, it's because they are non-perishable but bulky so are therefore being de-prioritised and offloaded from delivery schedules.

to photograph members of the audience

Members of the audience? This was an official timetabled event - why was someone expelled from the Labour Party allowed to attend?

RunningOnFumes · 27/09/2021 10:30

@DuncinToffee

I keep getting messages from my Dutch family and friends asking if the stories about empty shelves and petrol queues are true.
Yes, friends in France are horrified/incredulous. How low we've sunk as a country - it is tragic. (And remember when Brexity types were wanging on about the "world beating" vaccines? Well, most EU nations have now overtaken us. Only our infection rates are world-beating now.) So what's left? Why are we doing this to ourselves? The Brexity types that I know have gone very quiet on this..Aarrgh.
