Brexit Megathread - Part 1 because it's not over by a long shot

Started a new thread for all things Brexity as the last generic dumping ground reached its 1000 post limit. As this developing shitshow unfolds it's going to be important to share and unload. Clav of course will punt a contrarian view along with unrepentant 'taking back control' so-called Brexiteers. I look forward to seeing the benefits.

Ooh, that sounds good. Although I now use the Pinter which is actually quite good. But I'd suggest waiting until they release the "Pinter 2" next week if you're thinking about it. I want to know if my equipment has suddenly become obsolete...

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 25/09/2021 22:24

Have you seen the thread in Trending, "To panic about the dire state of the UK?"

Get your bingo card ready:

"other countries have it worse"
"at least we don't have Corbyn"
"immigrants"

They're all in there. Along with some, er, familiar C&P names.

vera99 · 26/09/2021 07:07

I haven't got the stomach anymore to wade into those threads this feels like a safe space to vent and share in comparison. There's a new bot line as well "I voted Remain but......" followed by some usual duplicitous Brexit defence line. Or maybe I'm just paranoid...

Alan Partridge is back - trigger warning don't be eating when you watch!

I’d be so grateful for a reason to take Labour seriously. At the last GE I did actually vote for them (first time ever) on the back of “free” fast broadband for all, which I thought a serious “levelling up” policy. I was ambivalent about Corbyn though disliked many of the people he surrounded himself with. But then I detest Johnson and his cronies and hangers-on. I wouldn’t consider LD or Green for multiple reasons.
What I would like to see from Labour is a five page, ideology free, summary of positive actions they would take on the issues causing most of our problems right now. Brexit, Covid, the NHS and social care, education and energy, along with an outline of how it would be paid for (increasing income tax on the rich/cancelling nonsense projects like HS2 and diverting money elsewhere/borrowing). Unfortunately their default position seems to be fannying around and promoting internal divisions instead.

WatchWait · 26/09/2021 07:43

I feel the same way born. I really want to be able to vote Labour.

Quite!

WatchWait · 26/09/2021 07:44

internal divisions
Apologies. A bit early for a Sunday morning Blush

@borntobequiet I'd buy that Starmer and his essays just don't read the room. Angela Rayner looks good though and she's lived a real-life to boot.

I’m alternately very impressed by and very disappointed with Angela Rayner. She can talk absolute tosh at times, and is easily wrong footed by fairly straightforward questions that require short, sensible answers - goes off on one instead. Still, Starmer does that as well, except you go to sleep before he’s uttered ten words.
I don’t know about Johnson, Gove etc any more as I just turn the radio off. I listen to Sunak, he’s unconvincing but sounds rational.

TipseyTorvey · 26/09/2021 09:46

Agree re listening to Sunak. He sounds like an intelligent adult and answers questions quite directly for a politician. I don't remember anything Kier Starmer ever says and Boris makes me so angry I have to turn him off. What a mess.

The sad thing about this tweet, as the replies point out, is that people can't work out if it is satire or not, as it is based on the true fact that the temporary visas are only until 24 DecemberConfused

"special privilege" really there are no words!

pointythings · 26/09/2021 10:49

This government still thinks people in the EU can't read English. This tweet will get out, will get rightly slated and how many lorry drivers are going to take up this 'privilege'? Honestly, I'm gobsmacked.

All that will happen is companies in the EU will up their wages and conditions and drivers will stay there. That's how the spunk-stained free market the Tories relieve themselves over each morning works.

All the petrol-panic threads popping up are a symptom of a slowly dawning reality where the government failed to limit the temperature rise and we're being dipping into boiling water*

*-Yes. I know. Don't write in.

prettybird · 26/09/2021 11:14

I don't think that Patel actually said that - i think the tweet is satirical.

But the point really sad point is that the Hostile Environment that the HO has deliberately created for potential immigrants means that we can't be sure Shock

Whether or not she actually said it, that is definitely the sentiment. And making Christmas Eve the deadline for validity reinforces that view Angry

DGRossetti · 26/09/2021 11:15

At least the UK hasn't run out of humour :)

If you can't tell at first glance, the damage is done.

DGRossetti · 26/09/2021 11:17

Just seen the headlines. All of a sudden I could vote for Angela Rayner.

DuncinToffee · 26/09/2021 11:26

I keep getting messages from my Dutch family and friends asking if the stories about empty shelves and petrol queues are true.

borntobequiet · 26/09/2021 11:26

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer told the BBC's Andrew Marr show: "Angela and I take a different approach and that is not the language I would have used."
Pressed on whether he would asking her to apologise, he said that was a matter for her but added: "I will talk to her later."

Weirdly this sums up why I can’t warm to Starmer, though maybe I need to see the clip for his tone and expression. But not expecting much…

DuncinToffee · 26/09/2021 11:30

Is that the news that she won't apologise for calling Johnson scum?

Good on her

wewereliars · 26/09/2021 11:38

He is scum, about time we had some honesty from politicians

DGRossetti · 26/09/2021 11:41

Is that the news that she won't apologise for calling Johnson scum?

It's a tad more nuanced than that. Her apology is conditional on his apologising for just one of the horrendous things he's allowed to be quoted as saying over the years.

Not that she needs to apologise for calling a turd a turd. Or - in more Brexiteer friendly language - a spade a spade.
