So Grant Shapps' solution to the shortage of lorry drivers is to allow them to drive longer hours.

Leading to more accidents and deaths on the UK's roads. But Brexit is Job Done and all is well - isn't it?

Trust Comical Clav - so a person saves 5p on something which usually costs at least £9.00. As the saying goes, it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Not a genuine bonus of being out of the EU.

Yet again something about France apparently going against the EU. I would have to work hard to read it in the original, so I question if it is as reported in the UK. Not about how wonderfully 'Global Britain' or possibly (within the next ten years?) Global England is faring.

As far as the chemicals are concerned, I remember a Question Time when an audience member who was involved in importing them, said that post Brexit this would be a problem. A Brexiter on the panel, I can't remember who, rudely put her down.

I remember the episode as well - it was Jacob Rees-Mogg - but the chemicals were imported from non-EU countries (China, India etc.) and then exported to the EU.

Non-anecdotally, the fact that Nando's and MacDonald's don't have any problems on the island of Ireland is pretty telling as to where the real issue is.

Although KFC Ireland/IE had some problems in August;

www.spin1038.com/news-and-sport/kfc-warns-of-supply-issues-1238173

Nando's is interesting - probably a combination of factors:

Northern Ireland surely didn't have problems because it has a poultry population of 25 million birds (and a poo problem!) - and only 7 branches of Nando's;

www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jun/23/poo-overload-northern-ireland-could-be-forced-to-export-a-third-of-its-animal-waste

There are 12 branches of Nando's in Ireland and 430 branches across England, Scotland, Wales - 40/50 branches were closed for about week.

Reports that Nando's were having supply problems surfaced on the 15th August. Looking at their website they had a 'free' 1/4 chicken promotion for 2021 GCSE and A Level students collecting results - and also for 2020 students because they 'missed out' last year. So how popular was the promotion?

Avara, one of Nando's suppliers (quoted in an article up thread/difficulties attracting new staff) are featured here as well;

23 June 2021 -
Previously operating five days a week, the Dudley plant is now running seven days a week, following a huge increase in consumer demand.

Production records have been smashed, with the factory producing hundreds of thousands more units of product than in 2020.

Production capacity has increased by 30%...

Nando's doesn't source it's chicken from Poland but avian flu might have had a knock-on effect;

April 2021-
One of the UK’s leading poultry suppliers has warned of a chicken shortage over the coming months after an outbreak of avian flu in Europe.
Birtwistles, which supplies butchered poultry to thousands of hotels and restaurants across the country, said stocks of some cuts, such as small breast fillets used in chicken burgers, are down by 40 per cent.
In a letter to customers, seen by i, the managing director, Glenn Eastwood, said it was “urgent and necessary” to alert businesses to potential shortages of poultry from Europe into the UK, which could last up to 12 weeks.
The letter said that Poland, the largest supplier of European Poultry into the UK, has had an outbreak of avian flu that resulted in the slaughter of more than 20 million chickens last week to reduce the spread.

I haven't even mentioned the 'pingdemic' or the HGV driver shortage yet...

No, it wasn't Rees-Mogg - I would have remembered him. I do remember that he was talking out of his arse, which Rees-Mogg also does, so he could have been on another programme were he was spouting rubbish.

My reference to the wine was more to do with the exchange rate on holiday.

Peregrina · 10/09/2021 23:19

always a cop out hey?

Yes. And look how that's going for them now!

Day ahead electricity prices

Spain and Portugal are showing slightly higher prices than GB in the chart for this hour and in fact Spain are not happy with the EU;

MADRID, Aug 12 (Reuters) - The European Commission has rejected a Spanish request to change the rules that underpin member states’ electricity markets as power prices in the country hit record highs, Spain’s Energy and Environment Minister Teresa Ribera said on Thursday.

Surging natural gas demand and the rising cost of European Union permits to emit planet-warming carbon dioxide have pushed up electricity prices in many countries and sparked a political blame game in Spain.

Clavinova · 10/09/2021 23:55

Yes. And look how that's going for them now!

Must be going quite well I think - apparently the Good Law Project are suing again because they think the Government are funneling several billion pounds into regions and towns of political benefit to the Conservative Party.

HannibalHayeski · 11/09/2021 00:19

Funny.

And finally a YouGov poll showing that the cunts are not in the lead.

Ah, maybe that's why Comical Clavi has been sent out!

WanJames · 11/09/2021 02:20

BrexSHIT Britain…don’t swim in the Rivers kids!

Peregrina · 11/09/2021 06:37

So political corruption is OK in Clavinova's world. Just imagine the screaming there would be if a Labour Government was channelling money to their friends or to Labour held constituencies.

What's this then? Immigrants in Spain who didn't regularise their position before the deadline are now being told to leave.

Barnier is to the right of French politics, as I may have pointed out before. In his role as Brexit negotiator for the EU, he was representing the EU and did so to the best of his considerable abilities.

Now he is gearing up to run as a French presidential candidate and is adopting his tone to that context, stating that he thinks EU member states should be free to set their own immigration policies without worrying about ECHR or ECJ rulings. Immigration will be a major issue in these elections, with Le Pen doing her usual schtick, and Barnier is setting out his stall.

He is able both to hold this opinion and also to believe that remaining within the EU is desirable for France, just as he is able to have worked as EU negotiator and then readjust to his domestic political context.

Remarkable though that may seem to some.

I thought Barnier did an impressive job as Brexit negotiator.
I probably wouldn't vote for him as French President.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/sep/10/minister-nigel-adams-refuses-to-apologise-swearing-westminster-protester-stop-brexit-man

France has Barnier…. We have this ilk of politician who’s height of linguistic skill and dazzling intellectual ability is to tell someone to F off when confronted in the street.

Can we also remind the faithful that a) the UK did have years to impose stricter immigration controls and opted not to and b) Barnier is not talking about internal EU migration correct me on that as needed Auld

Peregrina · 11/09/2021 10:48

Barnier is not talking about ending FoM for the other 26 EU countries either. Just saying you know, for our one time keen Brexiters who have been pretty quiet of late.

DrBlackbird · 11/09/2021 10:51

When Johnson admires Churchill for his ‘short, clear Anglo Saxon words’ do we think he had ‘boosterism’ in mind?

God the man is such an utter prat in this video. Why is the interviewer laughing at his non existent humour… And this was / is the man the Tory voter so admires. Sigh.

DrBlackbird · 11/09/2021 10:52

Exactly Peregrina. Though such niceties of distinction are not useful for a ‘gotcha’ argument.

Peregrina · 11/09/2021 11:03

You remember the quote attributed to Mark Twain:“It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than open it and remove all doubt”

I think most Brexiters are a bit stupid. I read their posts or see videos/TV programmes of prominent Brexiters and they confirm it.

yellowspanner · 11/09/2021 11:12

Barnier is talking about freeing France from the decisions of the ECJ and regaining sovereignty.
If France is already a sovereign nation why would he do this?
And if the ECJ is the be all and end all of courts why does he want France to leave its jurisdiction ?
Just saying 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
