So Grant Shapps' solution to the shortage of lorry drivers is to allow them to drive longer hours.

Leading to more accidents and deaths on the UK's roads. But Brexit is Job Done and all is well - isn't it?

I too would like to know what the Guardian link was.

pointythings · 09/09/2021 21:51

It was about people who had converted from pre-settled to settled status and how the system was showing the wrong information, i.e. people suddenly showing as having no legal settlement status at all and being refused mortgages as a result. Interesting that it's gone, I wonder whether they failed to fact check some of it?

Thanks, prettybird. I may have fucked up posting the link. Am very tired right now.

So much winning! Now PayPal is introducing a fee between UK and EU…

Chersfrozenface · 10/09/2021 07:48

@BettyAndFrank

So much winning! Now PayPal is introducing a fee between UK and EU…
Not just PayPal either, according to the London Economic, but also Visa and Mastercard.

www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/paypal-raises-post-brexit-fees-between-uk-and-europe-289640/

"From November, British businesses will be charged a 1.29 per cent fee for payments from the European Economic Area – and vice versa.

The current charges, which have remained unchanged since the UK severed ties with the EU, are roughly 0.5 per cent.

PayPal said it was changing its policy because it was incurring extra costs, like a rise in interchange fees between the UK and EEA.

European rules capping credit and debit interchange fees at 0.2 per cent and 0.3 per cent no longer apply to UK businesses – and both Visa and Mastercard have said they will raise them fivefold from October."

Freedom from EU rules = freedom to put up costs and prices.

Can I get a "Yay!" from the Brexiteers!

Follow-up to Prettybird’s Redwood ‘free the vets’ tweet.

A real vet now gives a few basic facts.

So why are some politicians so unaware? Or disingenuous?

Just the basic difference between farm vets and pet vets... It was known years ago that 90% of abattoir vets were EU nationals.

Another story about food shortages, some may be due to Covid but most of it is Brexit. It's a mess.

Apparently, Craig McInlay MP wants to send an aircraft carrier into the busiest shipping lane in the World to track migrant dinghies.

And we're not supposed to call Brexshitters stupid...

FatCatThinCat · 10/09/2021 17:12

@HannibalHayeski

Apparently, Craig McInlay MP wants to send an aircraft carrier into the busiest shipping lane in the World to track migrant dinghies.

And we're not supposed to call Brexshitters stupid...

So many questions ...

Does he know the UK only has 2 aircraft carriers?

Does he know they are currently deployed on the other side of the world?

How does a 72,000 ton, 240ft high aircraft carrier track a 20 kg 1ft high dingy?

What are they supposed to do if they do manage to spot a dingy? Call in the border people to deal with it? If so, why not 'track' from on land? A deckchair, flask of tea, box of cheese sarnies and a pair of binoculars is a bit cheaper than £3 billion aircraft carrier.

“The renewed threats against the media have coincided with the announcement by the new Taliban interior ministry Johnson cabinet that it was banning unauthorised protests.”

There, that fixed it….

Are there any Brexiteers left here? Has Clav gone to ground ?

Clav pops on every now and then to extol the virtues of Brexit, but not for long. We had a new one recently who berated us for not being nice to Brexiteers. Oh, how we laughed.

not really, Just a load of naysaying c'n'ping with zero critical thinking in evidence.

Peregrina · 10/09/2021 18:37

Clav pops up to tell us if something is going wrong in an EU country, especially Germany, or to tell us how this that and the other promises to bring in ££££ millions, at some unspecified time.

Then there was yellowspanner, not seen for about six weeks now, who was taking an EU citizen to task for not applying before a deadline, when the person concerned had done just that.

Clavinova · 10/09/2021 18:53

Has Clav gone to ground?

I've been on holiday again actually (last minute UK break) - and then otherwise engaged - although I posted on AIBU yesterday.

Another story about food shortages, some may be due to Covid but most of it is Brexit. It's a mess.

Food shortages ‘permanent’ seems unlikely to me. Lots of bargains in Waitrose - 'Autumn Savers' - '1/3 off' plastered everywhere - and I get a free newspaper.

Three brings in EU roaming charges and ends global scheme

I'm with O2 who haven't announced extra roaming charges (yet). I can't complain about my phone contract: I pay £10 a month with 7GB - and O2 buy me a free coffee in Caffè Nero every Tuesday or Wednesday - so in fact I am making a small profit at the moment (Caffè Nero is within walking distance of my house). I am unlikely to book holiday accommodation without free WI-FI and £1/£2 a day for a roaming bolt-on wouldn't bother me - less off-putting than paying for covid tests.

Freedom from EU rules = freedom to put up costs and prices.

Although the exchange rate has improved since last year - I spotted this in the FT for example:

Mark Hughes of The Real Wine Company imported two pallets from Laurent Miquel in the Languedoc. While his freight costs rose from £461 to £541 compared with last year, the improved exchange rate has meant the wine was actually 5p a bottle cheaper.

Might be back - I'm cooking dinner.

HannibalHayeski · 10/09/2021 18:55

Ah. More "I'm alright Jack".

About what you'd expect from a Brexshittier.

Peregrina · 10/09/2021 18:57

Was this cheap plonk at £3.99 a bottle, or expensive stuff?
Either way, don't spend it all at once.
Half a mark for trying though.

vera99 · 10/09/2021 19:06

I must have rubbed some demented genie lamp that was tucked away in my Brexit prepping storecupboard just in case the lights go out. (don't worry that's coming).

Clav I shall name you Comical Clavi out of respect for your indefatigability.

Chersfrozenface · 10/09/2021 19:08

The thing about mobile roaming is that people now use their phones for more than just entertainment. They use them on the move to navigate on Google Maps, check the weather and traffic conditions, use banking apps - and you can't guarantee being able to get wifi on the road, especially outside the cities. The networks wouldn't bother changing prices unless they knew how much data customers use and that they will make more money by doing so.

Peregrina · 10/09/2021 19:25

And May crowed about how the Tories had got rid of EU roaming charges. I know I have reminded you all of this before, but it's worth repeating.

HannibalHayeski · 10/09/2021 19:41

Comical Clavi!

I like it!

vera99 · 10/09/2021 20:52

THIS - keep smashing him into the face until there is nothing left.

Clavinova · 10/09/2021 21:15

Ah. More "I'm alright Jack"

Working class Leave voters thought the same about London and Home Counties Europhiles.

Was this cheap plonk at £3.99 a bottle, or expensive stuff?

Laurent Miquel starts from about £9 per bottle in Waitrose but it's not on offer at the moment. I always buy discounted wine - loads to choose from 25%/30% off. I might pay £9 for a wine that usually sells for £12/£13 but I usually look for something a bit cheaper.

Clav I shall name you Comical Clavi

This is more amusing:

EU’s former Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier demands French ‘sovereignty’ from European courts.

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/barnier-eu-brexit-france-sovereignty-b1917655.html

www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2021/09/09/michel-barnier-demands-return-frances-sovereignty-european-courts/

The thing about mobile roaming is that people now use their phones for more than just entertainment.

I would still happily pay an extra £1/£2 per day for an annual holiday especially if the exchange rate is working in our favour. More frequent travellers would surely upgrade to an inclusive phone package - and 'free roaming' doesn't mean you can exceed your usual data allowance in any case.
