So Grant Shapps' solution to the shortage of lorry drivers is to allow them to drive longer hours.

Leading to more accidents and deaths on the UK's roads. But Brexit is Job Done and all is well - isn't it?

The US decision to pull out of Afghanistan underlines the fact that the UK is very much the junior partner in any alleged transAtlantic partnership. America snapped its fingers and the UK followed it in initially, and now has to hastily cobble together an exit, once again in the position of taking orders.

Apparently "Kabul" translates as "Suez" in the Al-Qaeda dictionary. Who knew ?

DGRossetti · 20/08/2021 07:41

The US is too big a country to do "soul searching" unless it's a reality TV show intended to bleach black music for mass consumption.

And I now see that no calls were made from the appropriately monikered FO. Oh dear, Mr. Raab.

DGRossetti · 20/08/2021 07:42

Incidentally why has the Daily Mail suddenly decided Raab must go ?

Still waters etc ?

Seems Irish eyes are smiling at the Nandos pickle ... as well they might.

Last posting for today ... anyone else notice the thread in the CV section about "Surely this kills vaccine passports", and picked up the unmistakable attitude of some posters (plural) that they should be allowed to go whether they like in the world as some sort of God given right, rather that acknowledge the fact that other countries are well within their rights to set entry criteria ???

In a lighter vein;

God denies laughing at UK as first Brexit chicken to come home to roost is lack of chicken...

Tanith · 20/08/2021 09:55

Why does Raab's pretend-telephoning photo have the Chinese flag as well as the Union Jack in the background?

prettybird · 20/08/2021 10:02

The discussion about the US fear of "socialism" and the slippery slope of "socialised health care" reminds me of the story my dad likes to tell......

He was at a "high society" wedding in the States a number of years ago. The guy he was sitting next to, on finding out that he was a doctor in the NHS, asked him, horrified, "You're not one of those socialists are you?"

My dad took great pleasure in saying, "Yes, and proud of it" Grin

By picking up their phones and tweeting, the ass-kissing backbench tories have made more effort to save the job of Dominic Raab than he did to save the actual lives of Afghan translators

Vote Leave cabal official response to their Brexit causing supply chain food shortage nightmare:
"You voted repeatedly to end freedom of movement. Suck it up."
Amazing.

Just shows what pleasant people these Quitlings are...

Par for the course for the people who were led by Boris Johnson. When has he ever taken responsibility for anything?

But that's now the narative. Brexit was inevitable and our fault.

And even as I type the story is shifting to how brave Boris was to take on the "challenge of Brexit", coupled with "imagine if Labour had managed it ?"

DGR great minds think alike - I had that lyric stuck in my head yesterday while I was cooking dinner and thinking about shop shortages. Such an apt description of too many people here.

Also I am old, but we already knew that. Grin

Odd how Dire Straits were arguably the biggest band of the 80s (I suspect that people climbing Everest went past the cover to "Brothers in Arms" with that guitar on the poster) and are now ... nowhere. Seriously nowhere.

That said, I still think "Telegraph Road" is as good as anything people keep voting into the "Top 100 of a thing" things they have these days. Especially that mournful bell against the railroad sounds.

Telegraph Road is one of the best things ever recorded. I saw Dire Straits live in Rotterdam as a teenager and they performed it. They were proper musicians, it was stunning.

I loved Dire Straits.
< re lurks>

DGRossetti · 22/08/2021 19:35

I had a friend who had an unerring ear for the shit Dire Straits songs ("Love Over Gold", "Brother in Arms") while dismissing their real masterpieces ("Telegraph Road", "The Mans Too Strong")

He also had the same approach to Fleetwood Mac (who he thought were an 80s band ....)

HesterThrale · 23/08/2021 07:13

I think buyers’ regret might become a thing DGR.

I recently saw some relatives who I’d not seen since before the pandemic. He used to go on and on about the advantages of Brexit, but he didn’t mention it this time.

I didn’t say anything; no need.

Peregrina · 23/08/2021 08:35

Hester, should you not have asked him about how Brexit was going for him? Wink

DrBlackbird · 23/08/2021 09:01

Shame that the UK’s domestic workers don’t want to take the Home Office’s advice. Still, after hearing about how nasty EU workers ‘took’ jobs from poor British citizens, all the Beleavers must now be relieved to give those jobs to prisoners.

“Much of the food industry is facing a recruitment crisis…The advice we have received from the Home Office is that the UK’s domestic labour force should take priority. However hard we and many of the members have tried, staffing remains a challenge.”

Tony Goodger of the meat suppliers’ association said that last week he had contacted HMP Hollesley Bay in Suffolk, but the rehabilitation officer said there was such a big demand for inmates “we’ve reached our quota and we are not allowed to let any more out to go to work”.

JomeeSot · 23/08/2021 10:28

DGR and your fans, you really get on my nerves.
Report me I don't care, so bloody entitled.

Peregrina · 23/08/2021 10:34

Another Brexit fan, I see. Can't say what they like about Brexit, just insult a poster. Why come on the thread if what is posted gets on your nerves?

There are loads of threads that I don't even look at because they don't interest me. I don't waste time posting about how those threads are a waste of time and I don't agree with the posters' opinions.

pointythings · 23/08/2021 10:37

It's hilarious how some people don't seem to realise that this is a forum where people are actually allowed to express their opinions freely, within the rules for that forum. Apparently not being a Brexit supporter is now being 'entitled'. GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin
