So Grant Shapps' solution to the shortage of lorry drivers is to allow them to drive longer hours.

Leading to more accidents and deaths on the UK's roads. But Brexit is Job Done and all is well - isn't it?

Sorry to disappoint, definitely left wing and remain voter.

JomeeSot · 23/08/2021 10:40

How hilarious Hmm

pointythings · 23/08/2021 10:48

OK, so if you're not a Brexit fan, it must be DGR's taste in music that you object to? Is liking Dire Straits 'entitled'? Confused

You can't just come on here and randomly throw names at established posters without being questioned, especially when you are completely unclear about what it is you are objecting to.

JomeeSot · 23/08/2021 10:50

Definitely the Lidl version of de Pfeffel.
Good night and good luck.

Peregrina · 23/08/2021 10:53

OK so you are a Remain voter - but why come on a thread just to tell another poster that you don't like what they post? I personally have no opinion whatever on Dire Straits so didn't bother to post.

Why not just hide the thread?

JomeeSot · 23/08/2021 10:55

OMG established posters, how dare I.
Plus Brothers In Arms is bloody brilliant Grin

pointythings · 23/08/2021 10:55

peregrina if I spent my time objecting to every poster on MN that I disagree with, I'd never get anything done! I mean, it's just so random!

Peregrina · 23/08/2021 10:56

I see from a facebook post that I am following that R4 had an item this morning about a IoW care agency not being able to provide any carers. So they would like a special visa exemption for care workers.

It begs the question, would EU workers who have been made to feel unwelcome in the UK want to come back? One poster on the thread made exactly that point - in the time they have been in the UK conditions in their own countries, especially Poland, have improved so why bother to return.

pointythings · 23/08/2021 10:58

So now we want visa exemptions for

  • Agricultural workers/pickers
  • Lorry drivers
  • Care workers
  • Hospitality workers

I mean, why did we bother leaving?

Cool story bro
prettybird · 23/08/2021 12:59

We know you're a genuine Left wing Labour voter @JustAnotherPoster00 Wink I often disagree with you - but there's a lot that you post that I do agree with and whatever it is is well argued and worthy of discussion. Smile

Ploppers rightly get excoriated Grin

AuldAlliance · 23/08/2021 14:08

Ian Botham appointed a trade envoy to Australia.
Hmm

Peregrina · 23/08/2021 14:49

I laughed when I saw that Ian Botham had been appointed as a Trade Envoy. What does he know about trade? Last time I heard a Brexiter pontificate about exports it was Leadsom going on about jam, not cricket bats.

prettybird · 23/08/2021 15:03

Just checked out Botham's profile. He has zero business experience Confused, unless you count owning a grouse moor and trying to get Chris Packham fired by the BBC for highlighting the illegal killing of birds of prey and admittedly very admirable charity fundraising. I don't think a media career and being a member of the House of Lords count to normal people unless you're a Conservative crony Hmm

I'd like to have found out that he did contrary to my expectations have proper business and trade experience but I wasn't surprised to find that he did not, given the track record of this government Angry

pointythings · 23/08/2021 15:45

prettybird I reckon the thinking is that he's a well known ex-cricketer and that the Aussies will give him good trade terms because they are so impressed with his legendary cricketing prowess? Or something.

I loved Dire Straits.

Me too !

HannibalHayeski · 23/08/2021 20:31

Frankly, anyone who knows anything about trade knows that Brexshit is a complete load of bollocks, so they have to get rabid Brexshitters in.

You know, "we've had enough of exports experts" and all that.

I suspect he was only appointed so they could use the phrase "batting for Britain"...

DrBlackbird · 23/08/2021 22:45

Plus Brothers In Arms is bloody brilliant

Ahh so the offence was the insulting of this particular Dire Straits song Wink.

DGRossetti · 24/08/2021 08:35

I see the Telegraph is doubling down, and being forced to open their Kimono of Brexit. Punning aside, it's the sheer snobbery of the subtext: We don't want EU workers coming and doing low value jobs as that raises the expectations of our own riff raff who need to get back to - and remain - firmly downtrodden.

I'm reminded of a boss who once remarked childcare was too cheap as it allowed too many women to go out to work.

Meanwhile no milkshakes and soft drinks in McDonalds and the meat industry asking to use prisoners on day release and school pupils to supplement their workforce.

So much Brexit winning!

Getting ready to play the far east at their own game ?
Peregrina · 24/08/2021 10:24

But as you will see from the FT front page, British industries have given a Brexit bonus - they can use the CE mark for another year. Am I alone in wondering if the idea of our own mark could be quietly ditched, except I assume that firms will have to send a sample of goods to an EU certifying place.

So we get to use EU approved stuff without having any input into how those rules are made. I am not sure that this was what the Brexiters wanted when they talked of making our own rules.

AuldAlliance · 24/08/2021 11:53

I've made it to Scotland to see my parents.
No comment on the utter bollocks that is a Day 2 DIY test and the origami PhD required to fold the envelope to post it. Nor on the ambiguous language of the NHS site, even for a native speaker.

Idle observations following yesterday's shopping experience, which highlighted differences with France.

Shortage of sugar, some fruit juices, and other random items. Lots and lots of signs on very threadbare shelves, saying that there are issues with supplies, yada yada.

All the freaking fruit and veg is in a plastic container. My recycling pile will be over double the size of what it is at home by the end of the week.

Also, met a friend for coffee. Café shut due to "unexpected maintenance", which he told me had happened before. When it reopened that time they told him it had shut because of supply problems.

The sun has just come out, though, so I'm off to look for some uplands. Smile
