Possibly more bad news for the government. Really hope the Tory rebels manage to get the votes they need and win this one. It was a pointless policy change aimed at a specific group of voters at the expense of people most in need.

But drives a coach and horses through the idea that Boris can Do What He Wants.
DGRossetti · 03/06/2021 07:47

@DrBlackbird

We were taking about this the other day, people with some quite extreme views, on allowing migrants to drown in the Med/English channel, would also dive into our local river and risk their lives to save a drowning child (who comes from Ethiopia etc)

I lived in Zimbabwe for a time and found this amongst the white farmers. They'd say the most horrendous racist comments about the general population/politicians but be unfailing polite and have friends with individuals. It's this individual/group separation, which is weird.

At the same time I find myself doing the same thing about Tories....

That reminded me of :

www.brainyquote.com/quotes/winston_churchill_161541

When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite.

I will continue to post on here politely and to say what I want to say. I won't and never have insulted other posters or called them nasty names

But you do, constantly, just in a rather "clever" way.
You post your thoughts and then insult our intelligence by clinging to your "We left the EU" comfort blanket, when asked to justify your right wing views.

As for the ECJ/ECHR, you don't know the difference at all, if you did, given your ideas on deportations, you'd be campaigning to leave the ECHR.

This was a good showing by Andrew Mitchell and others pushing back against Johnson's mendacity. By all accounts Mitchell was spitting nails at Boris breaking his promise over DfID (believing Boris would keep a promise was stupid naive of him). Though the Guardian article mentions a big 'if'...

"The amendment, if selected by the speaker, would introduce a new clause to... obliges the government to meet the 0.7% target in 2022"

DGRossetti · 03/06/2021 08:43

Maybe all is not well in Tory towers ?

Peregrina · 03/06/2021 08:46

We have thought that all is not well in Tory Towers before, but when the chips are down they toe the line.

yellowspanner · 03/06/2021 08:59

It was Jasjas who said this thread was like the lion's den. You clearly don't read the posts. If I were you I would ignore mine as well as the others. 😉
Hannibal, for all you know I may well be campaigning for us to leave the ECHR. I'm not but you can't be sure. I will ignore the rest of your post.

yellowspanner · 03/06/2021 09:07

Hannibal, I am sorry if you don't think these numbers are clear.
51.9 is greater than 48.1.
And therefore the result is clear. As I said...close but clear.
And on a 72.2% turnout.

Westminstenders: The New Era
jasjas1973 · 03/06/2021 09:09

Yes Spanner, i put it in quotes, its not like anyone with your extreme opinions is going to get an easy ride on a pro EU post is it?

Its a pity you don't actually engage to support your views.

It wouldn't surprise me if you weren't campaigning to bring back the Work house.

Irrelevant, that was 5 years ago, you won, show us the "wins" & why you were right... or is this going to be another "i don't have to, you can't make me blah blah blah"

So far, its an abject failure, with far more negatives than positives.

Possibly the last stand of the actual Tory party that has so far managed to resist becoming flybynight shysters, con men and carpetbaggers. Maybe a pivotal moment? We can but hope (a rather forlorn hope unfortunately).
Peregrina · 03/06/2021 10:11

51.9 is indeed greater than 48.1 and the question, should we Leave has been satisfied. We never had the follow up referendum, which Rees-Mogg once believed we should have, as to whether the deal negotiated was good enough, or whether we should go back to the drawing board.

However the Tories did win their 80 seat majority, so from that it might be possible to infer that the Brexiters were happy with what was negotiated - so good bye fishing - that's fine, that's what we wanted, good bye farming - also fine that's what we voted for, Wetherspoons not able to recruit staff - that's fine, this is an opportunity for him to start improving staffing conditions and paying decent wages. And so on.....

pointythings · 03/06/2021 10:36

I recall yellowspanner describing support for Brexit as 'overwhelming'. I don't dispute that 52 is bigger than 48, but overwhelming? Hardly.

But it was won with lies, proven cheating, and foreign interference.

If you think that is a resounding win for our democracy then you really are stupid...

Peregrina · 03/06/2021 11:08

I don't dispute that 52 is bigger than 48, but overwhelming? Hardly.

I hope that when the Scots next have a referendum on Independence the result for is greater than this, just to see the Tories try to talk their way out of why 52% is 'overwhelming' but a figure of say 59% is not.

wewereliars · 03/06/2021 11:22

In a democracy minorities retain rights and a say and deserve protection. All the more so when the result was 52/48 and was based on lies. Democracy is not rooted at one point for all time and events and opinions change.

On the winner takes all argument. a majority could vote away the rights of all minorites. That could and has of course happened in practice, both in the past and present. To cheerlead for it goes beyond stupdity.

Some 30 MPs have now backed an amendment threatening to inflict Boris Johnson's first Commons defeat since 2019 election.

What's the ratio between male:female in society ? Why do waste time bothering with the minority 48% ????

Le me guess ... "it's different" ...

Bojo will find a way of buying them off, there wont be a commons defeat, he'll promise another undeliverable target and they'll back down.

Calls for greater EU migration, as we move out of lockdown... and less able to deport failed asylum seekers who came via an EU country (the vast majority) you really couldn't make this stuff up.

thecatsatonthewall · 03/06/2021 12:00

We have a moral duty to maintain foreign aid, the cut is quite dramatic as it not only specifies a lower % of GDP, GPD is also lower due to the pandemic.
Its affecting the worlds poorest and is also damaging to the UK reputation and that will not help us forge new trade deals and exports.

What other countries do is beside the point.

DuncinToffee · 03/06/2021 12:03

It's not really a rebellion either, it was in the manifesto after all.

At least migrants, or asylum seekers, will not have to stay at the Napier Baracks anymore.

‼️The EU will soon adopt a “code of conduct“ for how 27 should interact with UK. Will force a level of transparency, co-ordination on EU capitals & their dealings with London

Unprecedented for EU to do this with a 3rd country. Shows how little 🇪🇺trust there is with 🇬🇧 at moment

Can we please stop and just spare a thought for @yellowspanner today ?

She must be absolutely seething at the latest ECJ ruling against the UK and in favour of Tesco (mainly female) workers and equal pay.

A very sad day indeed for her lol!
