.....and if we move our food standards away from the EU that creates and even bigger hurdle for Northern Island. I suppose if the situation explodes it creates a wonderful distraction and Johnson gets his war.....

Clavinova · 21/05/2021 16:47

It's all part of the Brexit delusion that harking back to the war and the Empire.

Jacinda Ardern seems quite gushing about the relationship between New Zealand and the UK - she previously worked in London herself;

www.nzherald.co.nz/business/ardern-whatever-britain-decides-about-its-new-place-in-the-world-nz-stands-with-you/GYP2RJPKWR26RBUPUJODLLLAXA/

Lord Mandelson stated last night that Australia don't even use up the quota for sheep meat they are allowed now - we are unlikely to be flooded with Australian sheep meat.
@mrslaughan On a completely unrelated topic.... anybody heard from LQ?

I'm in touch with her. She was blocked because of some (non-Brexit related) posts and won't be back Sad She's well though - and enjoying her extra free time Wink
Oh that is such a shame..... but I do understand.

mrslaughan · 21/05/2021 16:50

Of course she is Clav - the diary and sheep farmers in NZ will be desperate to get a free trade deal. PM's are always gushy about that stuff....... but no one in NZ has forgotten about how the UK treated NZ ....... so they will be very careful about the terms.

Jesus Clav - are you really that naive?

mrslaughan · 21/05/2021 16:51

And I can tell you it is being discussed in NZ - that we can't let them (the UK) to fuck us over again......

Weren’t trans related were they? Wrongthink, indeed.

Peregrina · 21/05/2021 17:14

I fail to see how we can export high end cuts of meat if we drive our farmers out of business. You can't bread half a cow! That's so obvious it shouldnt need saying. The local farmer used always to have Tory posters up on his fences, not recently though!
I wonder if he will go out of business.

prettybird · 21/05/2021 17:15

I believe they were - and a lot stronger (similar) statements were made subsequently by others that were allowed to stand Confused

MayYouLiveInInterestingTimes · 21/05/2021 17:29

These bans are getting ridiculous. When mumsnet has banned all of its core audience, actual women and mums no less, who is going to be left? Just a bunch of chatbots, and those who don’t dare dissent?

Those doing the attacking are a group of Tory MPs calling themselves the Conservative Common Sense Group who seemingly wish to pull funding from groups that criticise the government.

Governments of various stripes have been pulling funding out of such activities that could since 2006 and before that I know of. I would argue that forcing everything into a private market model effectively co-opts and corrupts even more - most obviously the media. I don’t think it’s been a deliberate conspiracy all along, but if anyone isn’t familiar with the term ‘inverted totalitarianism’ look it up. I wasn’t impressed to see archaeology on a list of ‘useless’ arts subjects that were proposed for a 50% funding cut. History itself wasn’t mentioned in the short reports I saw. Is it a bit too big a target at this moment? A bit too close to book burning?

I think you forgot the women that aren’t adult human females.

HannibalHayeski · 21/05/2021 18:33

Ah, the Conservative Common Sense Group.

A group as badly misnamed as the ERG, who were not European, and did absolutely no research...

I was wondering about LQ the other day and glad to know someone's in touch and that she's well. I've missed her on this thread and on one or two others I sometimes dip into. An interesting, versatile and knowledgeable poster through whom I've learned a lot Smile

All good wishes to her please, prettybird, when you're next in touch.

Peregrina · 22/05/2021 05:37

Usually when people start spouting about "common sense" it's shorthand for "they don't agree with me"

mathanxiety · 22/05/2021 06:05

@Clavinova, Wrt your post of Thu 20-May-21 17:36:51

So why did you quote the Irish farmers' association representative, and why mention EU-Mercosur, if it was all hot air about a non-existent trade agreement?

Confused

Liz Truss is hell bent on securing an agreement with Australia, and since there is nobody to speak up for British farmers without having to field accusations of insufficient belief in Brexit or being a closet Remoaner, British farming had better prepare to be shafted.

(Unlike European farmers, who have not yet had to contend with a market flooded with Brazilian beef, and who have managed despite EU membership to sell agricultural produce everywhere there are forks to stick in it, and some places where there aren't).

mathanxiety · 22/05/2021 06:19

Lol @ the excitement about Elon Musk arriving.
Be careful who you wish for as your overlord.

www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/brits-uk-france-travel-document-270447

The British Embassy have confirmed that UK passport holders travelling to France will now have to waste time and money filling in Brexit-caused paperwork.

The measure applies to private visits to friends and family in France, where travellers do not have hotel or Airbnb accommodation booked.

(contd)

DGRossetti · 22/05/2021 08:35

Can we have a sweepstakes on when the first story from someone with no medical insurance gets into problems in the EU ? I'm going to say by end of July.

borntobequiet · 22/05/2021 08:52

My EHIC card expires in 2024, I renewed it when I last went abroad. I believe it’s fully valid until then. At least I hope so, I have flights booked to Portugal in October. (EasyJet has been very good in managing Covid postponed flights.)

prettybird · 22/05/2021 08:55

I've forwarded that on to my dad so that he is aware that my db will need to get the attestation for him when he next is able to goes to France to visit him. Dad likes to do everything by the book even if my db is more casual Wink

DoubleTweenQueen · 22/05/2021 10:38

Yes, visiting friends and family in France now requires a permit from the local Marie in advance via the hosts. I think also proof of insurance and financial independence during the defined period of visit.

I'm wondering about employment at the moment. It seems it's becoming more common for employers to coerce employees to move over to new contracts of employment, or they have been deemed to have chosen to resign. No flexibility, no redundancy. It has happened gradually, and now in larger organisations and higher professional sectors - it's happening in big pharma. This was seen in the US more often. Didn't think our employment law allowed it but clearly that was wrong. It happened recently in British Gas. Anyone with any knowledge of the area? I'm wondering if our laws always did allow it, but employers didn't go for it where they thought their employees had other options so would be likely to simply walk away? Or is this a stealth development, legally?

Just an observation.

The Refugee Camp is coming along nicely Wink

As we're in skanky Glasgow, our neighbours can't have anyone inside for a big birthday celebration. They're following my example from April of having people around in one hour slots, to stay within the guidelines Grin

Looks great, and I'm envious of your weather. Cloudy, showers and grey in this bit of Surrey Envy

prettybird · 22/05/2021 12:16

It's a single day of respite - the sun is coming and going. We painted the furniture and rose arch a month ago and haven't been able to do 2nd coats because it's been either (or both Hmm) raining or the temperature has been below the required 10C Sad
