I posted a while back about a ridiculous customs charge I had to pay due to the wonder that is Brexit.

So now, it’s a special birthday of a relative who has had a hard time recently. I ordered her a certain type of Murano glass vase (she collects these) and, hardly surprisingly, it comes from Italy where it is made. No problem as it’s free and fast delivery with this company.

Anyway, the vase didn’t arrive. Checked on UPS and hey presto - a customs charge of £170 for a vase that cost £450. This is “due to the inconvenience that is Brexit” that’s how it translates on the Italian tracking page).

So, it seems we can no longer order anything from Europe for to the genius of those who voted Brexit! Has anything more idiotic ever taken place in British history? Maybe reality will finally hit them at the same time as the customs charges hit?

Would you really want someone like Ursula von de Leyen, involved in decision making for the UK? Now that's funny, if you do.

No need when we have clowns like Boris Johnson, Rees -Mogg, Raab and Patel in charge. At least von der Leyen as a gynaecologist trained for and worked at a proper job once which is what none of the others did.

Toseland · 29/03/2021 20:03

Look there are more important things in life than vases. Sometimes you have to leave and that might be at a cost to yourself but it has to be done for the long term good. Like leaving an abusive partner. In the meantime buy from the UK and keep calm and carry on.

HamFisted · 29/03/2021 20:04

@alaia3

Because of course, nobody on here has anything in their homes “from abroad” and nobody has anything in their homes worth over £135. No not one of you.

So you’ll all be fine and anyway... ‘vaccines.’

I didn't say I have nothing worth more than that, just that I didn't import it from abroad and, if it's from abroad, didn't import it myself. There are places that will do that for you, and they import in bulk so it costs less.
smigg · 29/03/2021 20:04

Murano glass is from Murano

I've bought murano glassware in London.

Bunnyfuller · 29/03/2021 20:04

My Brexit voting parents are about to sell their apartment in Spain as their long term tenant has to come back to England as she can’t get residency. They can’t get another tenant as the same is happening to thousands of not particularly well off Brits abroad so they’ll be selling at a loss.

They’re shocked and horrified. What part of Leave were you fucking voting for?

KerplunkingAway · 29/03/2021 20:04

@Eleganz

"Well you better get with the programme and get buying your relatives Edinburgh crystal ash trays rather than that unpatriotic European rubbish."

God, so fucking predictable.

Where is this from please.

You quote something not on this thread.

Sock puppet fail?

SofiaMichelle · 29/03/2021 20:05

@arethereanyleftatall

Lol. You bellend. Again.

I guess the people who are alive because they've had their vaccine probably would take that over your moronic import complaints.

Yabu

Are you quite mad?

Vaccine procurement by the EU wasn't imposed upon member states.

They were free to order whatever they wanted or to join the block procurement scheme.

That the 27 all chose to join it was up to them.

The UK could have run exactly the same vaccination scheme that it has, in or out of the bloc.

Libraryghost · 29/03/2021 20:05

@kolo you can buy Murano glass quite easily from a British supplier thus negating the need to arrange your own transport provider etc. I mean wtf does that. Who buy direct from an Italian manufacturer? No one that’s who...

smigg · 29/03/2021 20:05

Because of course, nobody on here has anything in their homes “from abroad” and nobody has anything in their homes worth over £135. No not one of you.

What's this got to do with anything?

DdraigGoch · 29/03/2021 20:06

@Aposterhasnoname

Are you the poster with the £3000 artwork?
The one from Russia where duty would have been due anyway?
sst1234 · 29/03/2021 20:06

Number of comments telling people to buy locally is really quite something. Some people really have limited imagination. They must think it’s exotic to buy a something from abroad. While we’re at it, why don’t we stop eating imported fruit and veg and only stick to potatoes. Little Britain at its best.

LemonRoses · 29/03/2021 20:06

@DesdemonaDryEyes

Posts I’ve seen bemoaning Brexit have largely been from second home owners who are concerned about how much time they can spend in their holiday villa, and those like the OP importing ‘expensive’ items from the EU.

I’m sure it’s a bit shit for them. But 🤷‍♀️

And those working in businesses that used to export, perhaps? And those wanting to study in Europe? And those wanting to travel and take dogs abroad? And those wanting to work in Europe? And those who enjoy the peace the GFA has brought? And those protected by shared security access?

Rather amusingly, the people who are really moaning at the moment are the pro-Brexit numpties who have been booted out of their homes Spain because they don’t have the brains to fill in a residency application or sufficient funds to remain. They’ll get a nice little flat in Grimsby after they sell their place in Spain’s, I’m sure.

smigg · 29/03/2021 20:07

Lol. You bellend. Again.

🤣🤣

Sillyduckseverywhere · 29/03/2021 20:08

If you can afford a £450 vase, you can afford the duty.
It's no big secret that the charges began in January. You didn't have to order it and it's been made pretty clear that you may have to pay charges.

vinoandbrie · 29/03/2021 20:09

YABU. Learn from your mistakes and stop buying goods from overseas without checking the import taxes if it bothers you that much!

smigg · 29/03/2021 20:09

I don't think that's what posters are saying they just have little sympathy for someone who is moaning about an import tax they were aware of.

Sittingonabench · 29/03/2021 20:10

While I share your frustration about the world getting smaller/ less access to Europe both impacting people’s freedom and imports, I have to say the success we have had in regards to the vaccine compared with our neighbours has given me pause as to the unforeseen (impossible to foresee) benefits -really never thought I’d say that!! Most of my family is now vaccinated and i for one am happy to pay more import tax on rare purchases from abroad for that peace of mind and extra safety right now.

Bunnyfuller · 29/03/2021 20:11

I wanted to order some wall tiles from Spain, via their UK website. Brexit paperwork takes shipping from £35 to £140. It isn’t to do with the cost of the item.

Coconut2010 · 29/03/2021 20:11

YANBU
I fully agree with you @alaia3 and have actually experienced the same. Frustratingly when ordering the goods there was no mention of the extra custom charge, I just received an email out of the blue requesting payment when the goods were stuck at the boarder. And by the way it did not just happen with goods sent from the EU to the UK but also on stuffs sent from the UK to the EU.
What makes me sad reading this thread is that people don’t realise it is going to result in significant inflation for them given so many basic (food and healthcare) staples are imported from the EU.
This is sadly one of the (many) inconveniences of Brexit I have experienced since January 1st.
Fortunately we have dual British + a EU country citizenship so we are going to emigrate. We’re done with this country and its short sighted mentality, so are most of our friends. Pity for the UK as we’re all big tax payers whilst not using free resources (children in private schools, private health insurance etc).

TheGlassBlowersDaughter · 29/03/2021 20:11

@alaia3

Why the bloody hell would I only order from Britain. What utter nonsense is that? Who does that? It’s not even possible.

I’d this is the mentality of people it’s no wonder we are where we are.

Who does it? Let's see - people who care about the environment. People who believe in climate change. People who consider Italian glass/handbags, etc less important than trying to limit the carbon footprint of the goods they buy. Possibly even people who aren't raging capitalists and think it's important to nurture local communities and artisans. I can't quite believe you are posting here trying to 'educate' people when you seem to have missed the entire environmental and anti-consumerism and anti-globalisation campaigns that have mobilised hundreds of thousands of people across the globe. But yy please do update us every time you get confused by the customs and tariffs on your high-end purchases. It's quite amusing Grin
Alsohuman · 29/03/2021 20:11

@chocolateorangeinhaler

Well how stupid are you to get your fingers burnt once, do it again then moan that it happened.

You do realise the definition of insanity is doing the same things and expecting a different result.

Oh, you beat me to it.
Sillyduckseverywhere · 29/03/2021 20:12

Oh, and I work in import/export.
It's nowhere near as bad as the doom mongerers would have you believe.
Covid did a bigger number on us than brexit did. Brexit seems small fry in comparison.

TheJerkStore · 29/03/2021 20:12

Maybe we just like to support local businesses?

That doesn't make us small minded or limited - certainly where I live a number of businesses import goods /produce as well as sourcing things locally.

Bouny · 29/03/2021 20:12

I’ll take an efficient vaccine rollout over European bureaucracy any day. Slow hand clap for the vaccination programme in Europe!

redpurplebuttons · 29/03/2021 20:12

Is it really that unusual to try and buy British? I've been doing that for ages for environmental reasons.

I certainly don't think the PP who has only ordered one thing from the US is unusual. I don't think I've ever ordered anything from the US 🤔
