SLOW CLAP FOR BREXITEERS (again).

I posted a while back about a ridiculous customs charge I had to pay due to the wonder that is Brexit.

So now, it’s a special birthday of a relative who has had a hard time recently. I ordered her a certain type of Murano glass vase (she collects these) and, hardly surprisingly, it comes from Italy where it is made. No problem as it’s free and fast delivery with this company.

Anyway, the vase didn’t arrive. Checked on UPS and hey presto - a customs charge of £170 for a vase that cost £450. This is “due to the inconvenience that is Brexit” that’s how it translates on the Italian tracking page).

So, it seems we can no longer order anything from Europe for to the genius of those who voted Brexit! Has anything more idiotic ever taken place in British history? Maybe reality will finally hit them at the same time as the customs charges hit?

It's a hard life OP. Just ask a relative of one of the 25,000 people who die of hunger and poverty every single day.

But obviously we should have stayed in the EU so that the vacuous can import their expensive luxury goods on the cheap.

TerribleTiming · 29/03/2021 20:13

Maybe it’s now obvious why the company offered free delivery, knowing that you would have a customs charge to pay. It’s not great for enticing repeat purchases is it.

Paquerette · 29/03/2021 20:13

@SnarkyBag

As PP said slow clap for the muppet that keeps ordering things and not checking new charges that they’ve already experienced before 🤷‍♀️
This.

Also a how many people will actually want to order a fairly expensive glass vase to be sent all the way from Italy (and expect it to arrive in one piece? Out of 67 million people, probably not that many. A pretty ridiculous argument to say that Brexit is shit.

Doris86 · 29/03/2021 20:14

So as a result of leaving the EU you’ve had to pay a customs charge for a £450 vase.

Meanwhile our covid vaccination program is leaps and bounds ahead of where it would be if we were still in the EU, and thousands of lives have been saved as a result.

Yes I’m certainly clapping those who voted for Brexit.

Libraryghost · 29/03/2021 20:15

On a side note I bought some beautiful murano glass from Etsy.. second hand obviously but who cares? I was glad I could support a local business and my pre loved vase is gorgeous. Also by buying local I was able to reduce my carbon footprint. Over to you remoaners..

TatianaBis · 29/03/2021 20:15
@kolo you can buy Murano glass quite easily from a British supplier thus negating the need to arrange your own transport provider etc. I mean wtf does that. Who buy direct from an Italian manufacturer? No one that’s who...
Funnily enough ranges of any kind available in the U.K. tend to be limited. You will get much more choice if you go direct to the manufacturer.

The price you pay here will include any transport and import costs.

It may astound you but I have been in the habit of buying direct from European (and US) suppliers for around 30 years.

NommyChompers · 29/03/2021 20:15

I don’t think most people were worried about buying pricey Italian vases tbh. For example I am yet to be hit with an EU customs charge.

PyongyangKipperbang · 29/03/2021 20:16

One good thing to come out of covid.....a WHOLE YEAR without Brexit crap all over the boards!

Kolo · 29/03/2021 20:16

@smigg

Murano glass is from Murano

I've bought murano glassware in London.

You may have bought it there, buts it's from Murano.
CushionsandCandles · 29/03/2021 20:16

You know the pandemic is settling when Brexit irritations raise their head again.

Get a grip. The rest of the country is worrying about jobs, mental health, income and the loss of loved ones. If the fact your very expensive imported artwork is incurring import charges is vexing you aren't you the lucky one?

Sansaplans · 29/03/2021 20:17

Do you think people are really arsed whether you had to pay customs on an expensive vase?

adeleh · 29/03/2021 20:17

You could have had an efficient vaccine rollout without Brexit. There was no compulsion or law requiring us to join in with the other EU nations.

Coconut2010 · 29/03/2021 20:17

@LemonRoses You’re making a good observation, I have also heard so many Brexiters moaning about the consequences of Brexit, notably amongst fishermen exporting fishes and live seafood to the EU and farmers. And secondary home owners who cannot visit their homes as often as they would like to and were caught in recent travel bans for non EU citizens Grin

Libraryghost · 29/03/2021 20:18

@TatianaBis no it doesn’t astound me. As I said before my job involves importing and exporting to Europe so naturally I am very clued up about Brexit. I guess you must be more particular about vases than I am...

Sansaplans · 29/03/2021 20:18

I remember when covid first started there was almost a longing for the good old days of people moaning about brexit. Now I'm not sure what's worse!

TatianaBis · 29/03/2021 20:19

Murano is an island near Venice.

alaia3 · 29/03/2021 20:19

Basically, too many people in this thread are demonstrating that they’re total loons of the highest order. Even if, as some claim, you don’t directly import anything directly from “abroad in the EU” ever, the point is that these charges now exist where they didn’t before and will manifest in the price of anything you buy which originates (or part originates) from the EU. You might not have noticed yet, if you don’t happen to have directly ordered something from Italy, etc yourself, but you soon will because importers will just pass on the costs to you. And no amount of chanting about vaccines will stop this.

Didn’t Italy and Germany try to go it alone with their vaccine programs, but the EU wouldn’t let them?
Parkermumma07 · 29/03/2021 20:19

My heart breaks for you, one could not imagine not having my imported Italian vase or my piece of imported art. You poor soul.

Kolo · 29/03/2021 20:19

Of course you can. But you can't buy British Murano glass. You're buying Murano glass from a British importer.

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 29/03/2021 20:20

It’s so depressing how many people think that the UK vaccine rollout has been successful due to Brexit.

I have a fear now that the tories will be re elected solely due to vaccine rollout, when they should have been ignominiously booted out of office due to Brexit and the economic hammering that we are going to have to endure

Erkrie · 29/03/2021 20:20

Gosh the Brexiteers really should have thought about the increased cost to you for your imported art shouldn't though. Selfish bastards.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 29/03/2021 20:21

Frustratingly when ordering the goods there was no mention of the extra custom charge, I just received an email out of the blue requesting payment when the goods were stuck at the boarder
Why would there be? It’s nothing to do with the seller. Did you know you were buying from goods from the EU? If so, why didn’t you work out the additional cost? Prior to Brexit most purchases from the EU would have included VAT and they would have had a GB VAT number they paid it to the UK authorities under. Now, there is no VAT added at purchase and the cost you pay to import, depending on the value and type of goods, is VAT plus customs duty plus the handling charge from the courier. The handling charge is the only part that you can’t work out before hand - although if you know the courier company being used you can find that out too.

Are you saying it being successful isn’t a result of Brexit?
