SLOW CLAP FOR BREXITEERS (again).

I posted a while back about a ridiculous customs charge I had to pay due to the wonder that is Brexit.

So now, it’s a special birthday of a relative who has had a hard time recently. I ordered her a certain type of Murano glass vase (she collects these) and, hardly surprisingly, it comes from Italy where it is made. No problem as it’s free and fast delivery with this company.

Anyway, the vase didn’t arrive. Checked on UPS and hey presto - a customs charge of £170 for a vase that cost £450. This is “due to the inconvenience that is Brexit” that’s how it translates on the Italian tracking page).

So, it seems we can no longer order anything from Europe for to the genius of those who voted Brexit! Has anything more idiotic ever taken place in British history? Maybe reality will finally hit them at the same time as the customs charges hit?

You're being ridiculous op. As you can see from my user name I love knitting and love some of the yarn produced by independent yarn dyers in the US. I don't buy it because postage and customs charges make it unaffordable for me. Sometimes you have to accept that you either can't have everything you want or accept that there's an added cost to getting it. It surely can't be beyond your intelligence to work out the costs before you buy.

DoubleTweenQueen · 29/03/2021 21:07

Brexit is irrelevant regarding the vaccine emergency approval and rollout

smigg · 29/03/2021 21:08

I buy a lot from the US, always have to pay a charge. I just factor it into the cost

riceuten · 29/03/2021 21:09

jobs were being put at risk by cheap Eastern European labour

The jobs that the average Brit didn't want, that is...

Crankley · 29/03/2021 21:09

And the whining continues. Still, it's good for a laugh.

StormcloakNord · 29/03/2021 21:09

Some people have lost their jobs and can't pay their bills considering we're amidst a pandemic, and OP comes on here bleating about having to pay extra to get a fancy vase from Italy.

Read the room OP Confused

DoubleTweenQueen · 29/03/2021 21:11

@alaia3 Despite the rude comments you've received, there are many who do understand where you're coming from

pottydimley · 29/03/2021 21:11

Has it occurred to you that it might not be Brexiteers' fault as this couldn't have been predicted but vindictive EU officials?

ExitChasedByAnImposter · 29/03/2021 21:12

@XingMing

There are some exceptionally talented glass artists in the UK. Despite your relative's fondness for Murano glass, it might be a good time to consider broadening the collection, in the interest of global quality.
I love glass art. Can you recommend any U.K. glass artists?
Doingitaloneandproud · 29/03/2021 21:12

I buy clothes from Australia, I get hit with a customs charge each time. It's just something I know will be there so I'm aware and ready to pay the charge.
Get over it, you've lost free imports, it's shit but you're not getting it back. If you don't want to pay, find an alternative. If you really can't find an alternative, you have to pay.

Andante57 · 29/03/2021 21:12

@Gemma2019

I hear you OP - I had similar issues trying to order Easter eggs for the kids this year. Faberge London didn't stock the type I needed so I had to buy pre-enjoyed from an online boutique in Italy. Now I have to pay £4999 in customs fees thanks to bloody Brexiteers.
Grin Grin Grin
MintyMabel · 29/03/2021 21:12

Why the bloody hell would I only order from Britain.

As if that is even possible.

Working in the construction industry we breathed a sigh of relief that the kind of estimated increases that tariffs would lead to in a no deal brexit were finally avoided.

Seems we were a bit previous on that, as we are now seeing the kinds of increases the additional red tape (the stuff we alleged came out of Europe because of), an increase in import costs and a shortage in materials is causing. Then there is the delay to projects.

I have two projects I’m in charge of which each are over 35m in value. We are looking at an increase in around 300k on each of these. The client has about 8 similar value projects ongoing at the moment, that’s 2.4 million in additional costs for one client alone. They already have a clause which insists the contractor use local materials where possible (something which already makes the projects more expensive) The stuff coming from overseas is unavoidable. And before you all say, well this is obviously a wealthy client with money to spend, these are not private sector clients. You will be paying for this overspend. I’d estimate there are another 20 similar clients across the U.K. doing similar types and numbers of projects. That’s 48 million. And that’s just these types of projects. There will be thousands of private sector projects where these costs will inevitably trickle down to hit people’s pockets in one way or another.

Also worth mentioning the problem with people avoiding buying from the EU means those who supply things from outwith the EU are having a tougher time meeting demand, which also drives prices up.

So go on everyone, berate the OP for being foolish and not realising there would be an additional cost, but the underlying point is the same. Brexit is already costing the economy millions and millions of pounds. Not ideal when we will be trying to climb out of the Covid recession.

newstart1337 · 29/03/2021 21:13

Newsflash: Some people dont like paying taxes on their expensive imports.

alaia3 · 29/03/2021 21:13

Storm - rather than telling me to read the room, why don’t you read the thread and the lack of comprehension therein.

It’s not about a “fancy vase from Italy.” It’s about how the cost of living and the price of all sorts of things is about to skyrocket. Read that room.

OP posts:
Sittingonabench · 29/03/2021 21:14

For those saying the U.K. vaccine success is independent of Brexit because you could opt out of the vaccine programme - as far as I’m aware all nations are part of it and I strongly believe we would have been which means even if by now we had realised we were way behind, we would be on the back foot trying to get any traction. Instead many have been vaccinated and many lives have been saved and mental pressure of worrying about loved ones has been relieved. I truly wish this had t happened and wasn’t the case but I really can’t see us having achieved this much without Brexit.

Etinox · 29/03/2021 21:15

@alaia3

“In my life I have only ordered one thing from abroad and that was from the US”

Yes because that’s totally normal, isn’t it.

It is. It really is you gert muppet. Can you not get your head round the fact that import taxes on luxury goods bought overseas is literally the very last thing the vast majority of people care about.
smigg · 29/03/2021 21:16

If the thread was my grocery shop has gone up then the OP wouldn't be getting certain responses. I'm a remainer & a European but as I said no one gives a shit about an expensive vase.

pottydimley · 29/03/2021 21:16

@AntigoneLost

I can honestly say that of all the things I hate about Brexit, paying duty on imported luxury items probably worries me the least.
Absolutely
DoubleTweenQueen · 29/03/2021 21:18

@Sittingonabench That's not the case.

alaia3 · 29/03/2021 21:18

Grounding - so you’re absolutely certain, that nothing on your home right now has ever originated or part-originated from the EU? Right then.

@adeleh

I have never seen this sort of attack on here on people who spend this sort of money on a holiday or a mountain bike. And there are quite a few threads about both. Don’t know why art attracts such bile.
Holidays don't attract duty, do they?

I've never known anyone to import a mountain bike themselves. Most people just go to a shop and let them deal with the actual importing.

I buy secondhand parts for my hobby, often from Europe. There is a specialist online marketplace for this. Before the end of the transition period, the marketplace registered for UK VAT on behalf of the traders and therefore collects VAT at the point of sale. Therefore no surprises from incompetent couriers.

No, not many do, as most people don't import £3000 art

Doingitaloneandproud · 29/03/2021 21:22

No one likes paying it. Some people just pay it without moaning about it. That's all.
