SLOW CLAP FOR BREXITEERS (again).

I posted a while back about a ridiculous customs charge I had to pay due to the wonder that is Brexit.

So now, it’s a special birthday of a relative who has had a hard time recently. I ordered her a certain type of Murano glass vase (she collects these) and, hardly surprisingly, it comes from Italy where it is made. No problem as it’s free and fast delivery with this company.

Anyway, the vase didn’t arrive. Checked on UPS and hey presto - a customs charge of £170 for a vase that cost £450. This is “due to the inconvenience that is Brexit” that’s how it translates on the Italian tracking page).

So, it seems we can no longer order anything from Europe for to the genius of those who voted Brexit! Has anything more idiotic ever taken place in British history? Maybe reality will finally hit them at the same time as the customs charges hit?

There are some really good Etsy sites for second hand Murano (missing the point...)

TheGlassBlowersDaughter · 29/03/2021 20:42

@alaia3

Basically, too many people in this thread are demonstrating that they’re total loons of the highest order. Even if, as some claim, you don’t directly import anything directly from “abroad in the EU” ever, the point is that these charges now exist where they didn’t before and will manifest in the price of anything you buy which originates (or part originates) from the EU. You might not have noticed yet, if you don’t happen to have directly ordered something from Italy, etc yourself, but you soon will because importers will just pass on the costs to you. And no amount of chanting about vaccines will stop this.
Maybe dial back the 'loons' insults. You're the one who keeps being surprised by customs charges. Grin
smigg · 29/03/2021 20:43

The poster who I quoted, who said to buy British.

But you replied to my post where I said I had bought some Murano glass in London to tell me it was from Murano, which was never in dispute.

The poster who said buy British, didn't say buy British Murano did they?

emilyfrost · 29/03/2021 20:45

@alaia3

This country has had it as far as I’m concerned. We’re going backwards to nowhere.
So leave. Nobody’s making you stay here and whinge.

Brexit was the best thing for this country.

tangerinelollipop · 29/03/2021 20:45

That’s because they all agreed to operate together with regard to the vaccine. But no country was forced to agree

No, but there has certainly been peer pressure. Think of how Hungary was singled out for going it alone and ordering Sputnik. Hardly a very understanding and compassionate bunch, are they?

BagOfWind · 29/03/2021 20:45

After reading many threads on here I would like to add is your vase an essential item? Hmm
We are in a pandemic don’t you know Smile

Gwenhwyfar · 29/03/2021 20:46

@1Morewineplease

But Brexit means exactly this!!! We can no longer trade freely with Europe. End of. Why should anyone think " but I only wanted to order a ridiculously expensive piece of red glass for someone and receive it for almost free?"
Well, maybe because Boris said he got a good deal and not a totally crap one? Maybe because Brexiteers went on and on about how they were all about trade, it was just the other stuff they didn't lik. Turns out they don't like trade either. This is really not what was sold to people is it?
dontsaveusername · 29/03/2021 20:47

Brexit was about more than a bloody vase.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/03/2021 20:47

"So leave. Nobody’s making you stay here and whinge."

Stupid Brexiteer comment ever. You've made it impossible for people to leave without a visa. All the remainers are stuck here now bothering you. You can't tell them to go away!

MrsDrudge · 29/03/2021 20:48

You should have checked before you ordered. More money than sense is a phrase that springs to mind.

moggiek · 29/03/2021 20:52

Absolutely, dontsaveusername!!

MarinPrime · 29/03/2021 20:52

No one else is bothered OP, and I've not heard anyone complaining in RL.

moggiek · 29/03/2021 20:53

This is nothing more than a rather sad stealth boast, non?

XingMing · 29/03/2021 20:54

There are some exceptionally talented glass artists in the UK. Despite your relative's fondness for Murano glass, it might be a good time to consider broadening the collection, in the interest of global quality.

user1493494961 · 29/03/2021 20:55

But have you had your vaccine Op.

PinkiOcelot · 29/03/2021 20:56

@Bunnyfuller just tell them to put it up with an agency. We have tenants move out on a Friday and new ones move in on the Monday. No problem.

joangray38 · 29/03/2021 20:56

I wanted to buy some makeup - £18 tax and no I don’t want/can’t buy British as it isn’t made here. Same with murano glass the name gives it away. Choice is taken away and the buyer wont just buy British why should they after having access to the European market place.

Seventrees · 29/03/2021 20:57

So how are we supposed to "leave" the UK exactly? You know, now that we've had our Freedom of Movement taken from us? Please explain how the average UK person can now just "leave"?

Seventrees · 29/03/2021 21:00

So many reports of small export businesses going under. On top of the mass exodus of business from the UK we're already seeing. Leading to massive unemployment. Which people who still have a job will have to fund.

To the person rambling about being caught out a second time or whatever, this is not the ‘second time’ I have ordered from the EU and had these charges.

The first time I have ever noticed this was when something came from Russia, but I was told this customs tax (£130) was apparently also because we are no longer in the EU so, according to the customs representative I spoke to in the phone - “I don’t really understand it, but don’t have that protection anymore.” I sent off the requisite form to query that but it’s been over a month now, I think. No doubt it’s lost in a mountain of similar queries, so won’t hold my breath to hear back about that.

In the interim, 3 separate things were delivered from Bulgaria - all fine.

Something from US, but only £20 to pay on that as is reasonable and to be expected.

Now this.

But, you point is, you have no way of knowing whether you will be charged or not and no way of disputing the charges until you’ve paid.

Whether you import directly yourself or buy from a company that has imported the items (or parts of the items) for you, these charges will inevitably have to be mitigated against and they will be passed onto you as the consumer. All sorts of items are about to get a lot more expensive.

Hi folks,

We're just moving this over to the brexit topic.

adeleh · 29/03/2021 21:02

Well they’ve exported 40 million doses of the vaccine including £10 million to the U.K.,. The U.K., to date, has exported none. I’m not going to be pointing the finger at the,m for not being compassionate.
pompey38 · 29/03/2021 21:05

Oh , piss off with your Murano glass and £3000 worth of art

bungaloid- you import tax for anything worth over £135

FightingTheFoo · 29/03/2021 21:06

You can get Murano vases at Selfridges apparently.

You sound unhinged btw.
