SLOW CLAP FOR BREXITEERS (again).

I posted a while back about a ridiculous customs charge I had to pay due to the wonder that is Brexit.

So now, it’s a special birthday of a relative who has had a hard time recently. I ordered her a certain type of Murano glass vase (she collects these) and, hardly surprisingly, it comes from Italy where it is made. No problem as it’s free and fast delivery with this company.

Anyway, the vase didn’t arrive. Checked on UPS and hey presto - a customs charge of £170 for a vase that cost £450. This is “due to the inconvenience that is Brexit” that’s how it translates on the Italian tracking page).

So, it seems we can no longer order anything from Europe for to the genius of those who voted Brexit! Has anything more idiotic ever taken place in British history? Maybe reality will finally hit them at the same time as the customs charges hit?

People get so aggro and fixated on the fact that in this scenario was a vase, but what if you wanted / needed to buy your mother a fridge that just happened to be produced in Germany? Yes you could buy it from a UK supplier (as I would, no point importing a fridge) but those extra customs charges will likely be built into the price you pay.

How do you have so much money to spend on luxury purchases from the EU OP? You don't seem very bright. I can't imagine you can earn much with your limited comprehension. Is it family trust money you are spending?
Save yourself the effort of another thread and your surprise (again) at being charged customs duties. Next week, when you absolutely need to import a French 18th century tapestry for £1,800 - come on here and someone will work out the duty for you.

It's a hard life OP. Just ask a relative of one of the 25,000 people who die of hunger and poverty every single day.

But obviously we should have stayed in the EU so that the vacuous can import their expensive luxury goods on the cheap.

Well said!!!!

How is that well said when our food prices are going up? Who does that affect most? The poor!

Erm.. do you really think that 25,000 people die of hunger everyday in this country? You seem to have missed the point that this is a very extreme example of a first world problem.
thesecretvoter · 29/03/2021 21:25

I try to only buy British, why wouldn't you?

Northernshepherd · 29/03/2021 21:26

I voted remain. You are a fool. Are you seriously saying you're surprised people did not consider the extra charges faced by well to do folk buying fancy presents when deciding how to vote? People voted (whichever way) based on the things that were important to them.

Well one things for sure

You’re never going to do that well as a country if you’re bitterly divided, yet that’s what we are.

No need to do that either. They sell fridges in the UK too

alaia3 · 29/03/2021 21:29

Too many people are having a turn. So aggressive and unpleasant. No wonder the county is about to sail down shit creek.

jobs were being put at risk by cheap Eastern European labour

Utter nonsense. Back in the early 2000s, the rates we were paying for qualified electricians and plumbers were ridiculously inflated because there was a major shortage in trades. At one point, the charge out rate for a plumbers mate - a trainee plumber, was more than our charge out rate for our company director.

As Eastern Europeans were given freedom of movement from 2004, we saw these rates normalise back to what they had been previously, still not cheap, but a reasonable market rate. They didn’t steal anyone’s jobs, they plugged a skills gap. Contractors welcomed it as they could take on more work, clients welcomed it because they could do more projects. The economy benefited too.

This “coming here stealing our jobs” narrative is ignorant and designed to rile up those who are looking for an excuse to blame immigrants for the nation’s problems.

“They sell fridges in the U.K. too..,”

Aaaagggghhh!

Anyway. I’m off. Can’t argue with batshit. Good luck folks!

You have also come across as pretty unpleasant at times...

I have never seen this sort of attack on here on people who spend this sort of money on a holiday or a mountain bike. And there are quite a few threads about both. Don’t know why art attracts such bile

It's not art it's the import tax.

If I started a thread now about buying a £300 dress from the US & complained about paying an import fee what do you think people would say?

Doingitaloneandproud · 29/03/2021 21:35

Shall we expect another thread in a few weeks time when you're surprised by another charge?
Paquerette · 29/03/2021 21:39

@Gwenhwyfar

"So leave. Nobody’s making you stay here and whinge."

Stupid Brexiteer comment ever. You've made it impossible for people to leave without a visa. All the remainers are stuck here now bothering you. You can't tell them to go away!

Stupid comment.

If you can pay for your own housing, living expenses and healthcare you're welcome in most countries, including those in the EU. If not you will struggle in pretty much any country in the world.

Brownteddybear · 29/03/2021 21:39

There is no vase or artwork, just a poorly veiled jibe at those who voted to leave.

That's all folks. Anyway OP has flounced. Off to dream up the next luxury item.

ListeningQuietly · 29/03/2021 21:42

Levi Jeans have gone up in price since before Christmas.

Spare parts for many White goods are getting harder to source

UK exporters are being crippled

the OP's choice of tale of woe is surreal
but the problem is real.

m0therofdragons · 29/03/2021 21:43

With family in the US and Canada I’ve always been aware of this and it’s increased over there at the moment too due to Brexit but it’ll calm down again. Overall we would pay appropriate export tax. It’s not a random charge but some people get away with it by lying about the contents and it not being checked. I didn’t vote for Brexit but either way there would have been good and bad points and you can spend your life looking for opportunities to say “ha, see I told you so” or you can work on not being a dick.

FYI most of us don’t spend that much on a vase for ourselves so certainly wouldn’t for a gift so it’s hard to find common ground.

DdraigGoch · 29/03/2021 21:44

@sst1234

Number of comments telling people to buy locally is really quite something. Some people really have limited imagination. They must think it’s exotic to buy a something from abroad. While we’re at it, why don’t we stop eating imported fruit and veg and only stick to potatoes. Little Britain at its best.
But I don't buy bananas direct from Costa Rica. I buy them from a greengrocer who buys them from a wholesaler who imports them. That way I don't have to sort out any of the paperwork or deal with a useless courier like UPS. I'm still buying locally, even if it wasn't grown locally.
MintyMabel · 29/03/2021 21:45

as far as I’m aware all nations are part of it and I strongly believe we would have been which means even if by now we had realised we were way behind, we would be on the back foot trying to get any traction.

@Sittingonabench that’s a different issue and actually goes to the heart of what brought us to Brexit. People were complaining not about things the EU forced us to do, but about things we could have done differently within the EU but successive U.K. governments refused to do.

The U.K. had already placed orders for the vaccine when they were still in the EU. You can strongly believe what you wish, but the signs are, the U.K. was already doing their own thing.

It also completely ignores what impact there might have been had the MHRA been involved in the approval process working alongside the EMA, rather than them having to rely on the remaining nations with their less qualified agencies to carry out the required review.

QueenOfTheDoubleWide · 29/03/2021 21:47

Yes you could buy it from a UK supplier (as I would, no point importing a fridge) but those extra customs charges will likely be built into the price you pay.
As others have explained more than once, a company importing a large quantity of items are likely to pay less than delivery charges for one single item

You really are totally unaware and insensitive to others aren't you? Many of those who voted for Brexit did so out of a belief that the status quo was not working and things could not get much worse for them. Buying high value art and ornaments would not even cross their radar as they struggle to put food on the table.
I'm afraid I can't find any sympathy for someone so petulant

MintyMabel · 29/03/2021 21:47

I'm still buying locally, even if it wasn't grown locally.

You do realise you’re still paying import charges even though you don’t buy the product direct from the supplier?

Not Murano, but a hugely talented glass artist
