Westministenders: Unilateral Ignoring of WHO rules

Where we are:

On 1st January the EU started to apply checks on all goods from the UK coming into the Union.

However the UK decided to take a slower route to this, and planned that on the 1st April the UK we would be carrying out Sanitary & Phytosanitary paperwork for animal and plant EU imports like meat and eggs.

Then on 1 July we'd implement a full customs check on all goods arriving into the UK from EU member states.

Obviously we've struggled with exports as we weren't ready for this and its fucked business. But ultimately the import side of things has yet to hit the shit fan still.

It sounds like there is likely to be issues with imports of food in particular, so there is talk of delaying our plan of checks until later in the day. There is concern that the reopening of pubs and restuarants which will up demands of imports occuring at the same time as checks are put in place is likely to be 'problematic'.

Remember we get 2/3 of fruit, veg and cheese from the EU. And half our wine. And to date these largely have only been affected by haulage issues NOT UK customs issues...

You might want to keep that in mind.

It's so thoroughly depressing. We know that we can't withstand the might of China, so instead of being part of organisations which aspire to higher ideals and attempting to set a standard, we say if we can't beat them we will join them.

Not that it surprises many of us here. We don't hear much now about how being out of the EU will raise standards - we could but we won't, when a race to the bottom is easiest for Johnson and his moneyed chums, who will be alright anyway.

HannibalHayes · 16/03/2021 19:31

Yes, where are the likes of Corcory and the others who were adamantly proclaiming that we would be immediately raising standards?

Tumbleweed

Saw this on twitter.

Caused a bit of a giggle...

Amusingly I had an email from LeClerc earlier commenting how quiet these threads are at the moment.
To which my comment was
we are biding our time

There was rather a blast of "told you so" the last time things changed
and when Lockdowns ease
we'll be at it again
as the inoculated excrement interacts with the vaccinated ventilation device

That's one better than my DH's comment this morning. He noted how rapidly the UK was becoming the Western equivalent to N. Korea.

We can't actually trade with (used to be) our biggest trading partner so now we'll have to a) grow our own root vegetables and b) feel big by having more nuclear weapons, whilst c) the public is no longer allowed to protest and all the while d) Westminster quietly demolishes any legitimate opposition, centralises power further and cosies up to other totalitarian states (ones with money). All classic tinpot dictatorship moves.

Dom's fingers are all over the review of defence and foreign policy and you want to just weep. So that's what he was doing with his garden leave and this is it? Screw the armed forces, build up nuclear capability, build a whacking great 'command' room and all those asinine idiot little boys masquerading as senior politicians and their SpADs all get to play war with real toys. All least the US had hopes of Biden's win to maintain hope and optimism. What do we have? Not much...

DrBlackbird · 16/03/2021 20:19

I almost can't read the news anymore...

mrslaughan · 16/03/2021 20:32

Have you seen that Pritti's announced today that all council elections are going to become FPTP?

ListeningQuietly · 16/03/2021 20:48

"Become" ?
English ones always were
Scotland and Wales she cannot change

mrslaughan · 16/03/2021 20:50

Major of London is apparently preferential voting? This will more to FPTP

ListeningQuietly · 16/03/2021 21:05

MrsL
London mayor is primary unconnected legislation
do you have a link ?

Its also not a home office matter, its MHCLG
who are in the doghouse already over May 6th

ListeningQuietly · 16/03/2021 21:28

That Indie story is crap journalism
MHCLG oversee elections
not the Home Office
and primary legislation would be needed - not a risk they will take

by golly we need a competent press

Peregrina · 16/03/2021 21:40

and primary legislation would be needed - not a risk they will take

This Government would, with their large majority.

There isn't a huge amount going on atm. A lot is being effectively hidden by lockdown.

Things will become more apparent when things reopen and we start to apply customs checks on our side....

Dh was saying to me just today that he thought we shouldn't be running our stockpile down but should be maintaining/growing it as he anticipates shortages once checks that should be happening already are implemented.

DrBlackbird · 17/03/2021 01:16

Developing talented scientists was actually something the U.K. was good at doing, but even this the govt seems to want to screw up. They don't want to pay for anything but nuclear warheads. They are all nuts.

mathanxiety · 17/03/2021 04:54

I see that President Biden will be having a call with Taoiseach Martin on Wednesday which is St. Patricks day. I suspect the timing is no mere accident of schedules but highly symbolic

It's an Annual Thing.

Normally the Taoiseach would fly to DC to have a sit down with the US President of the day around St Patrick's Day, and hand over a bowl of Irish shamrock.

There is usually a morning meeting, followed by lunch at the US Capitol, and an evening reception at the White House.

There's a lot going on in NI.

Peregrina · 17/03/2021 07:47

What is going on in NI? Our Press won't report it because it's expedient for Johnson's Government not to, and secondly, because they are not interested in NI anyway.

I thought they had delayed these checks for 6 months (at which point they'll delay them again)...
squid4 · 17/03/2021 09:16

I've been double-jabbed now. Pfizer.
Friend of mine caught covid 8 weeks after first dose of Pfizer. I remain a little anxious about this strategy, though as cases have come down under lockdown we may get away with it anyway.
Slightly despairing of all the vaccine scrapping.
Hospital situation re covid is better than it was, though locally cases barely dropped at all for a month or two & still high (far higher than september). ITU back to normal number of beds, only since this week.
Staff battered.
Mother in law's funeral was pretty shit. No way to say goodbye.

squid4 · 17/03/2021 09:17

Also everyone in the hospital expects another wave and absolutely no one thinks we are going to have a glorious summer, but I don't know if that's because we're all traumatised.

squid4 · 17/03/2021 09:19

I am so appalled at them cutting away our right to protest and wonder if this issue has cut through (I know hardly anything does).
