Westministenders: Unilateral Ignoring of WHO rules

Where we are:

On 1st January the EU started to apply checks on all goods from the UK coming into the Union.

However the UK decided to take a slower route to this, and planned that on the 1st April the UK we would be carrying out Sanitary & Phytosanitary paperwork for animal and plant EU imports like meat and eggs.

Then on 1 July we'd implement a full customs check on all goods arriving into the UK from EU member states.

Obviously we've struggled with exports as we weren't ready for this and its fucked business. But ultimately the import side of things has yet to hit the shit fan still.

It sounds like there is likely to be issues with imports of food in particular, so there is talk of delaying our plan of checks until later in the day. There is concern that the reopening of pubs and restuarants which will up demands of imports occuring at the same time as checks are put in place is likely to be 'problematic'.

Remember we get 2/3 of fruit, veg and cheese from the EU. And half our wine. And to date these largely have only been affected by haulage issues NOT UK customs issues...

You might want to keep that in mind.

now that we have left the EU, are the benefits of Brexit?
I was hoping one benefit of Brexit might be that Nigel Farage fucked off, we didn't even get that.
I suppose you could say the fish are benefiting from the collapse of the UK fishing industry. So that's one benefit at least.

Kendodd · 23/03/2021 14:29

Another benefit, I'm sure form fillers have seen a massive increase in employment.

TheElementsSong · 23/03/2021 15:00

We have had the answer - too busy.

To be fair, perhaps the reason they are "too busy" is because they're spending all their time wailing "Whyyyyyy Dooooo Yoooooo Haaaaaate Ing-Ger-Land?" Grin

pointythings · 23/03/2021 15:04

I would expect yellowspanner to trot out the UK vaccine programme. Which we could have had without Brexit, but hey.

I'm always very Hmm at people who equate loving your country with wanting to plaster its flag everywhere. You won't see a lot of orange in my house, but I'm still quite fond of Cloggieland.

Peregrina · 23/03/2021 15:08

Yes, you would expect the vaccine programme to be trotted out. We must be grateful for small mercies that Johnson didn't put the roll out in the hands of his cronies.

Peregrina · 23/03/2021 16:07

67,000 retail jobs lost. But no matter, as Clavinova told us, JCB is creating 450 jobs.

ListeningQuietly · 23/03/2021 16:25

I've still not seen a single benefit of Brexit.

I've not had one pointed out to me that cannot be debunked in one sentence.

the negatives of Brexit re piling up

but the government voted to screw over people in dangerous leasehold flats (rather than making the rich bastard freeholders rectify the mistakes)

and the government brought in legislation that lets those rich enough to have a second home overseas have a holiday
but not those with family overseas

BASTARDS

DGRossetti · 23/03/2021 16:29

@Jason118

I am not going to list things because there are too many and I am busy. Made me laugh. Typical response of all Brexit supporters when asked about how we are better off.
Vaguely reminds me of being back at school, and being warned by a teacher not to write one item and "etc" when asked for a list.

Alternatively, reminds me of Stewart Lee ..

I like all the cheeses. All the cheeses .... all of them Red Leicester .... all the cheeses

yellowspanner · 23/03/2021 16:37

Jason, I was not asked about Brexit.
I was asked which policies of the government I support.
All of them.

yellowspanner · 23/03/2021 16:41

I
Just for the record you all need to read the posts.
I said I support the government, which I do.
I was then asked which policies I like. Nothing to do with Brexit. I said I was too busy to answer. I was. I was helping someone with their bees.
I am no longer too busy.
However, I was NOT ASKED ABOUT THE POSITIVES OF BREXIT.
So read the posts before posting nasty comments.

ListeningQuietly · 23/03/2021 16:42

@yellowspanner

Jason, I was not asked about Brexit. I was asked which policies of the government I support. All of them.
Including leaving leaseholders with valueless properties?

Including Hereditary peer elections?

Including allowing offshore tax havens to keep their company registries secret?

Including allowing the owners of UK Newspapers to pretend they live abroad and pay not tax in the UK ?

Really, ALL of the Government's policies?
Even the ones that contradict each other ?

wewereliars · 23/03/2021 16:42

Nobody supports all government policies, unless they are terminally ignorant and don't know what they are and / or stupid and do not understand what they mean. Unless they are the the head of government I suppose. That you Boris?

Kendodd · 23/03/2021 17:10

Helping with your friends bees. And yet you support the Gov removing a ban on bee killing pesticides. Poor bees.

Peregrina · 23/03/2021 17:15

So breaking an International treaty is fine.

OK but this will work both ways, as countries like China have not failed to notice. So what exactly do we expect the Chinese to say when the Foreign Secretary huffs and puffs over Hong Kong? It's likely to be a polite "Why should we respect a treaty signed last century, when you don't respect ones on which the ink is barely dry?"

squid4 · 23/03/2021 17:44

So, is anyone losing their shit over the US questioning AZ trial data or are those hysterical headlines only when a European country does it?

(nb. I support AZ and would take it, but they aren't doing themselves any favours right now!)

ListeningQuietly · 23/03/2021 17:49

squid
I've had an arm full of AZ
I am safer with that vaccine than without
All news stories about vaccines are noise not light at the moment
so I am actively and deliberately not reading them
until its covered in
New Scientist / The Economist / Private Eye

squid4 · 23/03/2021 17:50

I'm happy you've had a vaccine! My parents have both had a first dose of it too

The british press is going a bit insane with this though

pointythings · 23/03/2021 17:56

The british press is going a bit insane with this though

Let's face it, 'insane' is their default state and has been for some decades.

ListeningQuietly · 23/03/2021 17:58

The Government are doing policy by tabloid leak.
The BBC seem to have lost all independence.
All of the editors know that telling their readers about the truth of Brexit will lead to rioting.
The head of steam building as lockdown ending looming is becoming a concern.

so pointing the finger at vaccine situations in other countries is an excellent squirrel

especially with elections looming in a few weeks

squid4 · 23/03/2021 18:02

Pretty sure there will be riots.

BBC 5 pm news bulletin said that BJ had “nearly died” of Covid. WTF?
They changed it to “was seriously ill” by 6 but...anyway, I complained.

Clavinova · 23/03/2021 18:29

67,000 retail jobs lost. But no matter, as Clavinova told us, JCB is creating 450 jobs.

Not too long ago, the retail industry were warning of tens of thousands of unfilled vacancies when EU freedom of movement ended.

Never mind JCB:

March 2021 -
The ONS found that UK Tech has created more than 100,000 jobs since the start of the pandemic.

Harvey Nash Tech Survey;
“The ONS figures underline the strong health of tech amidst booming demand for digital and cloud-based solutions and services in the Covid era. We don’t see any sign of this changing, and expect many thousands more jobs to be created in tech through the rest of this year and beyond. The pandemic has not dimmed tech – in fact, it has turned up the lights.”

The UK jobs market recovered 170,000 jobs in January as the COVID-19 vaccination roll out boosted employer optimism, claims new research from job search engine Adzuna.

Thames Freeport today announced that it was open to do business with new customers, hours after the Government announced that it would be one of eight new freeports in England.

25,000+ new jobs with many more across supply chains, with significant investment in training and skills.

The East Midlands received a major economic boost...with the government’s announcement that it will be one of eight new Freeports in England, creating an estimated 60,000 new skilled jobs for the region.

as part of the Spring Budget, Tees Valley was announced as one of the first places to get Freeport status under the new Government policy to create Freeports across the country.

Covering 4,500 acres, the Teesside Freeport is the largest in the UK. To put the size into perspective, it is equivalent to 2,550 football pitches. It will create more than 18,000 jobs and provide a £3.2billion boost to the local economy over the next five years.

Peregrina · 23/03/2021 18:35

The british press is going a bit insane with this though

Because that is the only thing which Johnson has been able to get right by letting the NHS tackle it. Whether that was just luck, or because he finally got rid of Cummings and has some slightly saner advisers now, who knows?

I thought Fauci had said that the AZ vaccine was OK?

As for riots, there were some in Brisol which were reported, but not much reported about the Newcastle protest the other day.

Re medical supplies MIL still awaiting some special bandages made in Germany - it must be about 5 weeks now she's been waiting. Covid or Brexit, or a combination of both?

Peregrina · 23/03/2021 18:37

Freeports failed last time and were quietly scrapped. Promises of jobs, isn't actual jobs.

Clavinova · 23/03/2021 18:40

Pretty sure there will be riots

Is this analysis correct??

Up to 1.3 million overseas nationals have left the UK over the past year, with almost 700,000 non-UK born workers having vacated London alone, according to a study.

“Migrants, especially from Europe, are disproportionately likely to be employed in the hospitality sector, and other service sectors that require face-to-face contact, so are more likely to have been furloughed or lost their jobs.
