Westminstenders: Move Your Business To The EU

RedToothBrush · 24/01/2021 14:46

The government is advising people to move their businesses to the EU to avoid UK taxation and red tape.

Why would you do this?

For the interests of the uk?

Or is it about power WITHIN the uk?

PMK. Lots of veg in the garden here, most of which DD won’t eat (she has declared that she doesn’t eat leaves Hmm), but that’s why we have 3 bags of frozen peas! Today I finally finished turning the last of the cooking apples into apple sauce.

My mother (born 1916) hated cooking too and wasn’t much good at it. But housework, shopping and cooking were hard work. My early childhood home had coal fires which were a lot of effort and generated a great deal of dust. (The only other heaters were electric ones that were seldom used - and it was a big house, poorly insulated, with big windows.). Shopping had to be done daily as we had a small fridge (by today’s standards) and no freezer. The washing machine was a top loader and hard work (I think when I was much younger stuff just went to the laundry or was washed by hand). Eventually, after my mother developed a heart problem we had a cleaning lady, and, amazingly, got a dishwasher - that was in about 1968 and I literally knew no of one else with one.
Life for many women, even relatively well-off ones, was really a slog in those days. It must have been difficult to enjoy cooking, especially given the limited time and limited range of ingredients, not to mention the cost. I believe that food was relatively way more expensive than it is now - in fact I doubt it’s ever been so cheap, or so easy to prepare.

DH has just ordered an eastern european cooking book in an effort to brighten up swedes, turnips and greens.

I just made Hugh Fearnley Wotsit’s potato and turnip dauphinoise - it fabulous and I don’t like turnips very much. Was from Veg Every Day. Jamie Oliver’s ‘Veg’ is also useful. And Veggiestan by Sally Butcher.

@DGRossetti. Fuck. And by the end of this year Brexit will have cost us the same as our EU contributions since ‘73.

So it’s like a double Brexit.

Weve got Olivers veg book. My big issue with it was the lack of stuff suitable for seasonal British veg in it. I kind of gave up with it for that reason. I should probably try it again but i got frustrated with having to buy in stuff for recipes. I find his recipes more expensive than I'd really like tbh. Much prefer Furry-Whittingtonboots for that reason.

I’m probably not as committed to Brit seasonal veg as I should be. Not terribly fond of swede.

The one that drives me mad is Ottolenghi - great recipes but they take all day to make. Who has fresh Kaffir lime leaves to hand?

RedToothBrush · 24/01/2021 23:43

I wouldn't say im fond of swede. Which is why i want to find recipes to make it bareable! Oliver's training is too mediterranean for the British climate to really work for british veg all year round.

I give you the original Lord Woolton pie

It calls for parsnips but I think you could probably make an acceptable substitute using swedes.

From the previous thread, a comment from Emilyontmoor

...the more you study recent Chinese history the more you see just it as a continuation of the rise and fall of dynasties.

I think the same can be said of the trajectory of Imperial Russia, the former USSR, and the Russian Federation.

From a lurker a lovely swede recipe
Smoked olive oil isn't really essential, what with the smoked paprika. I used ordinary oil, but used smoked sea salt (Lidl & Aldi stock it) to up the smoke.

DoubleTweenQueen · 25/01/2021 09:22

Move your business to the EU - apparently unofficial advice. Nudge nudge etc.
Why are you all talking about plants? Are they more difficult/expensive to get hold of now? Like everything else?
Already sussed the MP that's masquerading in our constituency, massaging his career trajectory.
Haven't seen much of the Brexit die-hards lately?

SabrinaThwaite · 25/01/2021 09:28

They featured some swede recipes on Saturday morning’s Kitchen Cabinet, including whole roast swede.

Looking forward to my haggis, tatties and neeps tonight though.

Shocking, depressing, but ultimately not surprising. Angry

Thanks for the new thread, RTB.

DGRossetti · 25/01/2021 10:37

Proof - if it were needed - of how scared the Tories are of the Scottish independence they will be remembered for long after Brexit is fixed.

All we need to make it a dead cert is Tony Blair and/or David Cameron to stick their oars in.

Peregrina · 25/01/2021 10:39

Hmm, somehow I don't see any campaign led by Gove gaining much traction in Scotland.

SabrinaThwaite · 25/01/2021 10:46

Biscuit for Gove

DGRossetti · 25/01/2021 10:59

Just had an email from my MP. They want to call me ? (I did rather go off on one when they voted for the Boris bill).

(My last MP Gisela Stuart also kept trying to call. She wanted a photo op with DW outside the post office she voted to close was fighting to keep open. So pleased I told her to shove it.)

DGRossetti · 25/01/2021 11:06

@Peregrina

Hmm, somehow I don't see any campaign led by Gove gaining much traction in Scotland.
I suspect the next poll will have increased a % or two in favour of independence.

It's an interesting question as to what the unholy alliance of Goven-Brown (texture like shit) are actually campaigning against ? After all, if - as Boris insists - there's not going to be a referendum, there's no need for a campaign.

Suggests something has been wargamed and it's not Boris (or his successors) call any more ????

I'd be curious as to the numbers of rejoiners and unionists ? I know one of this parish ( dexra ) but is it a significant faction ? And which sentiment prevails ? I don't think they are compatible now. If you are a Unionist, you have to accept Brexit. Whereas there is some logic in an IndyBrexit position even if a minority ?

The problem Gove will face - and I wonder if he has run his actions past his paymasters on this - is that trying to quell Scottish Nationalism is also telling English nationalists they they can go fuck themselves with whatever is left over after the Scottish get arsefucked. And that may not be the greatest Tory vote winner in a long term.

There are two plants growing now.

DGRossetti · 25/01/2021 11:10

and ..

www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/there-a-number-of-diehard-remainers-who-would-quite-like-the-uk-to-break-up-claims-andrew-neil/25/01/

The UK risks becoming a “failed state” unless it makes reforms to the Union, former prime minister Gordon Brown has warned. His comments come as Andrew Neil claims a number of Remainers want to see the UK break up.

(contd)

I don't "want" a break up. But if the people of another country in the UK wants independence, then it won't be my place to refuse.

HannibalHayes · 25/01/2021 11:13

Andrew Neil is going full on hardcore right-wing Brexit loony now that he's no longer constrained (as far as he was) by working for the Beeb.

Hopefully he'll soon dispel any of the gravitas he earned in his previous roles...

bellinisurge · 25/01/2021 11:17

Ha ha. Do things which drive the Uk inexorably towards a break up and then blame people for talking about it.
I never thought an independent Scotland or a reunited Ireland would happen in my lifetime (in my 50s). Didn't lobby for it/didn't see the point.
I would now be surprised if neither of those things happen.

HannibalHayes · 25/01/2021 11:19

Who would ever have guessed that the Conservative and Unionist party was referring to the Irish union?
