Westminstenders: Move Your Business To The EU

RedToothBrush · 24/01/2021 14:46

The government is advising people to move their businesses to the EU to avoid UK taxation and red tape.

Why would you do this?

For the interests of the uk?

Or is it about power WITHIN the uk?

@ListeningQuietly

I just looked at that JPM story no evidence of new jobs more likely to be reallocation of staff BUT if its an online bank, they could work from anywhere so Canary Wharf is still stuffed
According to the Wall Street Journal, the HQ will be in Canary Wharf - so a brass plate, then, and a few suits calling in for meetings, when allowed.

The call centre will be in Edinburgh. Still in the UK, but not London. Oh, and the average wage is around £23,000 pa.

ListeningQuietly · 27/01/2021 20:41

Chers
As I said on another thread,
COVID has proved that people in the knowledge economy are no longer tied to place
And can thus be paid the going rate for where they happen to live
so long as the servers are in the right regulatory space

I do not believe in "Trickle Down"
but I do know that pin money by the super rich is worth more than the average London salary

I'm really pleased to see @thecatfromjapan back on the boards.

In terms of Starmer, I agree that he probably needs to set out a compelling vision of a better Britain, and give voters something to get behind. Someone I follow on Twitter mentioned that he thought last year Starmer had been emphasising the principle of reciprocity, and that's what I'd be interested to read more about.

I've been wondering if Starmer has been savvy enough to listen properly to the kinds of concern that were articulated in David Goodhart's book The Road to Somewhere about 'metropolitan, liberal elites' and find some of the things that more people can get behind (e.g. last year's Telegraph headline about veterans deserving COVID free care homes)

At the moment it all seems a bit lacklustre from Labour, and yet while I agree that politics should move on from its present hang up on the past the exceptionally weak performance of Change UK makes me think we'll be watching Labour's death throes for a long time yet.

I do feel it's a shame though: I don't believe that most people are OK with the direction of the Tories into a highly libertarian, 'I'm alright Jack' pro-billionaire autocracy, but there's no one obvious with a better national narrative to convey Sad

TatianaBis · 27/01/2021 22:56

Gah just can’t stand David Goodhart - liberal elite until racism got the better of him and he turned conservative elite.

mathanxiety · 27/01/2021 23:12

I've always thought federal UK was an obvious choice - but that was only really feasible with a Labour/LibDem/Green government

@TatianaBis
I think the only way a referendum will ever be called in either case is with Tory support, probably only if cutting NI and/or Scotland loose was actually a Tory project. The reason for this is that Labour would suffer greatly in subsequent elections from Tory charges of tearing the Union apart. Not for nothing are the Tories called The Conservative and Unionist Party.

The problem when it comes to ripping off the tape that holds the Union together is that the population of England is the electoral plum for both Labour and the Tories, and therefore deep-seated nationalism of the English electorate matters to both parties.

Lovely to see you, too, Arborea.

Article her about car industry, giving another snapshot of how the pandemic is hitting industry.

However, as the article also says, beneath the pandemic lurks Brexit.

The wine importer (mentioned on here a few days ago) was interviewed as well. When asked if his company would still be here next year he confidently replied it would...

Could they tell me who they fancy for the 1.50 at Cheltenham this Saturday?

Shrillharridan · 28/01/2021 08:06

Alright?
Off to do my shift at foodbank today.
I forbear to comment on posts discussing food poverty and "starving children" because a) it makes me incredibly angry that certain posters are so glib about this issue and I won't give them the fucking satisfaction and b) once you've seen kids in a school dinner hall go around picking up and eating other kids leftovers its quite hard to be glib about it.
I live in what is classed as an affluent area.
Food poverty is now - in my view - one of the worst threats to our young people/families.
4 million children in poverty in the UK in the 21st century.
Let that ^ sink in.
I know what its like being a child trapped in poverty.
I suppose I'd hoped we would move on as a society from my youth.
Thats all I have to say about that.

Poor old Sam Cam struggling with exporting to the EU from her fashion business. Oh dear, how sad, what a pity.

I think the last person i may have sympathy with over her business is sam cam.

Its not like if it goes tits up the family will have to move into dave's shed. Its a vanity business, no more no less.

But interesting reportage.

Of the thousands of small business owners suffering, the BBC ran their fingers through the phone book and they "happened" to stop at SamCam ?

So what's the real reason ? The cynic in me says that it's a desperate attempt to pander to the "Bloody Nose" Brexiteers who may be losing faith. "Don't worry the country is going to shit. Look who's been kicked in the 'nads again." ????

Peregrina · 28/01/2021 12:00

A modicum of sympathy is maybe due to Samantha Cameron in that I assume she voted Remain. But then, not a lot of sympathy really. If her husband hadn't immediately done a runner he might have been able to negotiate a softer Brexit.

I see Boris' push for Scottish independence continues unabated.
Why on Earth he thinks his presence would hinder independence sentiment, I don't know. Deluded.
DGRossetti · 28/01/2021 12:26

Why on Earth he thinks his presence would hinder independence sentiment, I don't know. Deluded.

I think something has snapped. Every single attempt to counter independence since last September has just nudged the support up.

What's that expression about when to stop digging.

And the idea of a "dream team" of Gove and Brown may just have sealed the deal.

WorriedMutha · 28/01/2021 12:26

I expect Boris has written an article in favour of independence and one against. Just so he can weigh up the pros and cons don't you know.

prettybird · 28/01/2021 12:31

Nicola yesterday during her corona virus press briefing said that he shouldn't travel (beyond going up the "office"), not because he wasn't welcome in Scotland but because it was not essential travel and he should be setting a good example.

She did add that if she were to be political, she'd be delighted he was coming WinkGrin

HannibalHayes · 28/01/2021 12:35

@Clavinova

HannibalHayes By the looks of it, we're the only island in the top 50.

You have forgotten about Northern Ireland - it's attached to a different island.

And note the difference in infection rates at the border...
Peregrina · 28/01/2021 12:59

I see from various facebook pages I am on, that Sam Cam is not getting much sympathy.

Let's face it, she and hubby won't be facing eviction soon, and they won't be relying on the food bank to feed their children.
