30 pages. And yet no Remoaner can tell us how they plan to get back in to the EU. Tell us your cunning plan. I assume it involves a “People’s March”, John Bercow, Tony Blair and an unelectable Labour Party.
You do realise that in all likelihood no one on this thread is a senior elected official or on the campaign/strategy team for this right so we can't write plans on their behalf?
I can give you my hope but not my plan. The treaty we have signed gives me some hope because much of it allows for a reframing. In effect it is BRINO because we have to abide by EU standards and regulations (not exactly sovereignty and taking back control but besides the point). The treaty sets up not just a framework for constant negotiations but 5 year reviews for adjustment. Anything is possible in 2026: Single Market, alignment, customs union, up to 90% of EU membership – but one thing won’t be – Rejoin.
So get the 2024-2029 parliament out the way, closer alignment where we might at least get some of our rights back such as the ability to work and live abroad. Then from 2029 we'll see - I suspect we will rejoin at some point after that just because of demographics and economic necessity. I suspect levels of xenophobia, jingoism and English exceptionalism will have dropped by then too. It will be interesting to see how much soft power and wealth we have lost by that point as that could determine on whether we have to adopt the Euro and Schengen as a condition for joining.
This all hinges obviously on how Labour fight these elections because FPTP is not particularly progressive in this day and age, the Tories can win a 80 seat majority off the back of 40% of the vote so I am glad to see that Labour are looking to amend their rulebook to allow for electoral pacts so could govern in the event of a hung parliament.
Does that answer your question?
