Westminstenders: a feature of the system not a bug

RedToothBrush · 25/11/2020 16:02

Tests on the new queuing system in Kent have revealed that lengthy tail backs are a feature not a bug.

We should get used to them because thats normal not the system malfunctioning, but the planned system working as designed.

Today we have found out that there's no money left. The economy is fucked. And tomorrow we will probably all be in T3 with the Isles of Wight, the tip of Cornwall and inner Westminster the only places left in T1.

Christmas has apparently been 'saved' though. Well if you are dumb and lacking in functional brain cells its 'saved'. Trade for Christmas is already thoroughly goosed and indoor family gatherings may come with a extra side of covid. The BBC have done an epic job of 'doommongering project fear' style graphics on this wonderful subject.

Tis the season to be jolly. Jolly fucked.

It's basically squirrel racing, isn't it? They need some 'good news' to distract from the coming storm that is No Deal Brexit.

Yep!

Also, they know that their core supporters are a bunch of flag-waving English nationalists, who lap this stuff up.

The UK was the first country to sign a deal with Pfizer/BioNTech - now we will be the first to deploy their vaccine

My limited understanding is that it's two jabs that need to be separated by 21 days ?

Who trusts the UK to be able to manage that for 6 people, let alone 60,000,000 ??????

(I don't, by the way).

Anyway, back to Brexit, and Oh. Dear.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/dec/02/uk-hopes-of-early-us-trade-deal-dashed-by-biden-warning

Britain’s hopes of securing an early trade deal with the US have been dashed by a warning from Joe Biden, the president-elect, that America will not sign a trade deal with anyone until the US has sorted out its competitiveness.

Britain had been closing in on a trade deal with the administration of Donald Trump, a fierce opponent of the European Union, but Biden has said in a New York Times interview that his priorities will be to improve investment in US manufacturing and the protection of American workers.

“I’m not going to enter any new trade agreement with anybody until we have made major investments here at home and in our workers and in education,” he said.

Some supporters of Brexit had touted a US trade deal as one of the early benefits of leaving the EU and its customs union, although the economic value of such a deal had been questioned.

Biden told the New York Times: “I want to make sure we’re going to fight like hell by investing in America first.” He named energy, biotech, advanced materials and artificial intelligence as areas ripe for large-scale government investment in research.

The remarks underline the extent to which leading Democrats have retreated from a wholesale embrace of globalisation, and insist US foreign policy must give greater priority to America’s domestic interests.

(contd)

my DBs circle are mildly amused, as they feel this isn't a million miles away from a US version of Brexit. "Taking back control" being a prime driver.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 02/12/2020 16:07

Sickening appropriation, but not surprising. Sigh.

I wonder if we need some form of Brexit-reeducation camp to drill it into the naysayers that Brexit Will Be Bloomin' Brilliant ?

Also some sort of law to prevent social media from spreading vile rumours about Brexit ???

www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/fish-merchant-who-voted-brexit-to-take-back-control-of-uk-waters-says-he-was-brainwashed/01/12/

A leading fish merchant who voted Brexit to “take back control of UK waters” says he was “brainwashed” after the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) unveiled requirements for exports from 2021.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Ian Perkes of Ian Perkes Fish Merchants Ltd, said he “wish he hadn’t” voted to leave the European Union in 2016, adding that tariffs on exports would be a catastrophe for his business and the fishing boats that supply it.

Earlier this month he joined an extensive list of industry figures who put their name to a letter warning that the bureaucratic requirements the government says are needed to export fish to the EU from 1 January will have a “seriously detrimental effect” on the industry.

Perkes had previously described warnings of fish being left on the dock after Brexit as “a lot of old tosh”, saying “businesses will continue” and “thrive” post-Brexit.

Here’s Ian Perkes, director of Ian Perkes Fish Merchants Ltd. He wasn’t so concerned about Brexit being bad in April 2018.

His outlook seems less bullish now.

Chief among the issues, as pointed out by the FT’s George Parker, is that much of the catch is usually shipped to markets in Europe.

“The problem, rarely acknowledged by ministers, is that Britons do not much like the fish caught in the UK’s rich fishing waters”.

This is news to a leading fish merchant? Hmm

At least I'll be Alright Jack - I actually like mackerel, pollack, weird shellfish and mollusks.

...Both Downing Street and the UK’s medicines regulator have contradicted a claim by Matt Hancock that Brexit helped the UK become the first western country to license a vaccine against coronavirus.

Very interesting article: BJ has gone from being a rebel at the back of class lobbing paper pellets and making fun of leaders, to being the boss having to make unpopular decisions, enact difficult policies and take responsibility for bad outcomes.

The people who supported him and got him there are no longer likely to back him. How will he survive without them? Maybe he won't.

In short, Johnson is discovering that people don’t see the joke when you’re the boss.

I bet Osborne enjoyed writing that. But motley crue? Where was the sub-editor? (Do they still exist?)

I tripped over that but wondered if it could have been taken from 'accrued' so had to look it up. Unfortunately it seems you are right and I haven't gained access to a new word.

Peregrina · 02/12/2020 22:13

But Osborne is wrong - I don't think we took cod out of our waters - we used to take them out of Icelandic waters until the Cod Wars finished that off.

I don't know about hake - except I do know that it's more popular in Spain. If we have hake to see then we just remarket it as merluza and bingo, everyone thinks they are on their hols and scoff it with pleasure.

borntobequiet · 02/12/2020 22:15

I could imagine George Osborne claiming to like heavy metal on
Desert Island Discs, for a wind-up, like. In fact, rather than going to bed as I should, I’m going to see what he did choose, if he did.

I must say, the Mash is much funnier now.

GeistohneGrenzen · 02/12/2020 22:30

I retract my last sentence ^^

There's more to the word 'crue' than I first thought e.g.

Middle English -
crew, n.1 ... Etymology, OF creüe, crue increase, auction (orig. p.ppl. of croistre grow, increase). Definitions (Senses and Subsenses). 1. A company of armed men or 'recruits', a task force or crew.

There's more, but I'm for sleep.
G'night.

Just what is Johnson playing at? It is less than a month left to the end of transition. Including Christmas. And they are still playing at reckless ridiculous buggers with our lives.

I was trying to be sanguine. But now I'm beginning to feel very anxious about what's coming. It seemed unfathomable that the gov't would let grocery stores run out of stock. Now...? Coming hard on the heels of so many job losses. It's really worrying.
