Westminstenders: a feature of the system not a bug

RedToothBrush · 25/11/2020 16:02

Tests on the new queuing system in Kent have revealed that lengthy tail backs are a feature not a bug.

We should get used to them because thats normal not the system malfunctioning, but the planned system working as designed.

Today we have found out that there's no money left. The economy is fucked. And tomorrow we will probably all be in T3 with the Isles of Wight, the tip of Cornwall and inner Westminster the only places left in T1.

Christmas has apparently been 'saved' though. Well if you are dumb and lacking in functional brain cells its 'saved'. Trade for Christmas is already thoroughly goosed and indoor family gatherings may come with a extra side of covid. The BBC have done an epic job of 'doommongering project fear' style graphics on this wonderful subject.

Tis the season to be jolly. Jolly fucked.

what one west country farmer thinks of the new farming policy.

Everything I know about maize silage I learnt from the Funky Farmer ...

Songsofexperience · 03/12/2020 08:54

I was trying to be sanguine. But now I'm beginning to feel very anxious about what's coming. It seemed unfathomable that the gov't would let grocery stores run out of stock. Now...? Coming hard on the heels of so many job losses. It's really worrying.

There's a word for what they're doing.
Let's say I don't believe they're acting in the people's interests.

mrslaughan · 03/12/2020 09:16

Gaspode - but the lower employment and animal husbandry standards- that was project fear......

Peregrina · 03/12/2020 09:21

What is Johnson playing at? Well, I think Osborn got that right in his article - he would much prefer to be writing rubbishy articles about scotch eggs rather than make a decision. Now a decision has to be made; a decision which would have taxed the ability of the most skilled politician which he's not.

borntobequiet · 03/12/2020 09:21

At least we have a (mostly) functioning NHS. I've had a few recent problems that have been very well dealt with so far (though last year I had a gallbladder problem that was very badly managed, with repeated cancelled appointments etc.) So it's likely the vaccine can be rolled out relatively efficiently.
I really don't like to think of the problems that might be encountered in the USA. Doubtless Biden and team will work hard, and some states may handle it well...but there must be the potential for huge social unrest if people can't get hold of a vaccine, or if the anti-vaxxers come out in force to disrupt things.

Whenwillow · 03/12/2020 09:21

I can't normally concentrate long enough to watch videos but that Funky Farmer really grabbed my attention. Thanks for sharing it.
I'm interested in thoughts re live export and brexit. @derxa shared a bbc link on another thread. I'm glad it's going to be banned but still unsure why it was the EUs fault, rather than the individuals who choose to do it.

borntobequiet · 03/12/2020 09:24

As for Brexit, who knows, except that it appears to be more of a shitshow every day. I sorted supplies at the weekend, and plan to do the finishing touches over the next few days. I appear to have bought an excess of jam again, I'm not sure why I do it. But at least I have plenty of pesto this time.

borntobequiet · 03/12/2020 09:29

I assumed that live animal exports were allowed because live animals are exported for a variety of reasons and "for slaughter" is something that needs to be defined. Slaughtered tomorrow, next week, next month, next year? Now going to look it up.
IMO proposed legislation is virtue-signalling squirrelling from UK. Do they really care? (Ans: No)

Greektome · 03/12/2020 09:29

I did the same with jam last time - now whenever I open a new jar, there's mould on top.

North Sea Cod www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-48798925

I don’t think GO has been on Desert Island Discs! Luckily the Mash did a selection for him

I must say, the Mash is much funnier now.

I suspect it's too late for the cod now.

I wonder if it's another squirrel to take our eyes off transition time born
I've spoken to a few people irl about January and most are not really aware of potential problems. It's just the odd article here and there, on the TV it's there and gone in a flash (mainstream media) It's really being kept quiet isn't it?
I've been accused of reading too much on line and to stop fretting.

The one thing I don't need to stockpile is jam: I have a gazillion jars of homemade plum jam, raspberry jam (although dh and ds tend to go through that - the raspberry harvest isn't as proliferous as the Victoria plums Wink), blackcurrant jam, strawberry jam, rhubarb and ginger jam.... I also gave a few jars of Seville orange marmalade and some whole Seville oranges in the freezer for another batch. Plus far too many jars of plum and tomato chutney Grin

The thing about the CDS / CRGS tax on second homes is interesting, because in fifteen years of living in France I don't know anyone who has actually made a profit on their home after renovation costs. I know they say all that stuff about profit on the telly programmes, but the French market really isn't like that.

www.irishtimes.com/news/world/brexit/good-chance-brexit-deal-can-be-reached-in-next-few-days-coveney-says-1.4426486

Coveney is optimistic: Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has said that while the UK does not always behave like it wants a Brexit trade deal, he believes that the British government does want a deal to be agreed.
Concluding such complex negotiations was “never going to be easy” he told Newstalk Breakfast on Thursday. But he was confident that there was “a good chance we can get a deal across the line in the next few days.”

Although Coveney also warns about reports that the British government was preparing a second piece of legislation could breach the withdrawal agreement.

However, Bernd Lange, a German MEP who chairs the European Parliament’s trade committee and was briefed by Mr Barnier on Wednesday as a member of its UK coordination group, said that he was less optimistic a deal could be reached than at the start of the week, and that with the facts he had at hand a no deal seemed the better outcome.

We got the vaccine approved first as we're a much better country than the French, the Belgians , the Americans, better than every single one of them.

FatCatThinCat · 03/12/2020 11:21

That's Gavin Williamson's opinion by the way, not mine. I think as a country we're complete knobbers compared to everyone else.

Richard Madeley had the best idea of how to deal with him:

Re Live exports
its not the exporting per se
its the length of the journey
so hill farmers will not be able to send livestock to far away abbatoirs either ...

THe EU does not rule out cross border movements because the borders are close together and can be crossed at 110 kmh Smile

Greektome · 03/12/2020 12:55

What a seriously weird comment. Best in what way? In every way?!!

Greektome · 03/12/2020 12:57

Which does highlight that he doesn't believe that Britain is "the best country". These politicians have come to a conscious decision to use populism / nationalism for their own ends. They have faced the deep embarrassment of doing this, and they have decided that it's worth it.

re lorries and drivers
I told you so springs to mind Sad

pointythings · 03/12/2020 13:27

We've come to a sad state of affairs when one of our politicians has to resort to Trumpian statements about how we're the best. I suppose we should be grateful that he didn't say 'bigly'.

HappyWinter · 03/12/2020 13:28

@prettybird

Reflecting what LQ has been saying for ever yonks AngrySad

Drivers are no longer wanting to bring loads to the UK so supply chains will be fucked. Sad

Is this just with no deal or is it with a deal too?

It doesn't make happy reading. It's far more pessimistic than I imagined (and I wasn't exactly imagining rainbows and unicorns). We are screwed, aren't we?

All of the "it'll be fine" from people about Brexit reminds me of a study from years ago about communities living near and far from a volcano. The ones who lived very far away worried a lot about the volcano erupting. The ones who lived right next to it didn't worry at all. I'm a bit worried that we are living right next to the volcano. It must be some kind of mental block that's evolved to help humans cope with a crisis, although I'm not sure it's the best way!
