Westminstenders: a feature of the system not a bug

RedToothBrush · 25/11/2020 16:02

Tests on the new queuing system in Kent have revealed that lengthy tail backs are a feature not a bug.

We should get used to them because thats normal not the system malfunctioning, but the planned system working as designed.

Today we have found out that there's no money left. The economy is fucked. And tomorrow we will probably all be in T3 with the Isles of Wight, the tip of Cornwall and inner Westminster the only places left in T1.

Christmas has apparently been 'saved' though. Well if you are dumb and lacking in functional brain cells its 'saved'. Trade for Christmas is already thoroughly goosed and indoor family gatherings may come with a extra side of covid. The BBC have done an epic job of 'doommongering project fear' style graphics on this wonderful subject.

Tis the season to be jolly. Jolly fucked.

But we know with people like Bridgen and Co, that they will make a noise and then dutifully troop through the Government lobby for the vote.

@Peregrina

But we know with people like Bridgen and Co, that they will make a noise and then dutifully troop through the Government lobby for the vote.
So hold them to account for it. If Bridgen pops up a few days later whinging about a bad deal, remind the dozy fucker he voted for it.

Rather than sitting around bewailing the Trumpster tactics, as if they're some magic spell in the worst D&D ripoff imaginable, everyone should be looking at what works against such, and deploy accordingly.

I would be curious as to whether people on Joe Bidens team have any contact or knowledge of team Starmer ? Because there appears to be a development of the tactic of simply refusing to engage where it generates trends. Someone has twigged that Google* only starts to trend things when the story is being discussed across demographics. Which is one proxy for "controversy" and thus "big advertiser bucks".

If you make sure your demographic - in the shape of your biggest follwed accounts - does not engage over false stories, then said false stories generally limit themselves to their own echo chamber.

Of course, by taking back control of deciding when you engage, you can simultaneously ensure that your opponents fuckups do become "viral". Four Seasons, and Melting Rudi being two cases in hand.

The tools maybe new. But as Shakespeare said, "There's nothing new under the sun."

OchonAgusOchonO · 01/12/2020 12:10

Ben Habib (Brexit party) was interviewed on Newstalk (Irish radio station) this morning. It was hilarious. He kept going on about how trade is about having a product other people wanted and tariffs are irrelevant. His final comment, when pushed on the fact tariffs on english potatoes would make them unaffordable was "well get your potatoes elsewhere then" Grin

Peregrina · 01/12/2020 12:41

There is nothing new under the sun predates Shakespeare - it's from the Old Testament.

As for the tools being new, well, new tools come along all the time. You can read into that what you wish.

@quiteathome

Just saw on a deals page that Sainsburys will be doing an offer of 10x bonus points on cupboard foods and non alcoholic drinks from the 4th December. Wondering if t is to get some stocking up done before the Brexit rush.

I am behind on the rest of the threads. Will catch up later

Which rather suggests that Sainsbury's are expecting New Year supply issues and therefore want to encourage people to stock up now while supply levels are good, to minimise the chaos later, without quite saying so in as many words.

I see the DoT is really digging into the archives for advice to hauliers

Just opened a letter from my bank informing me that my accounts will be shut down thanks to brexit. Every time the anger about the brexit betrayal starts to subside, more shit hits the fan.

Angry
Whenwillow · 01/12/2020 14:04

@FatCatThinCat why? I'm wondering because my local branch is also closing but the letter didn't mention Brexit.

Whenwillow · 01/12/2020 14:05

Sorry misread. You not in UK?

ListeningQuietly · 01/12/2020 14:17

I can relax now.
I've got my Christmas tree
and have done the Lidl Chocolate run

I will take Full advantage of the Sainsburys Brexit stockpile offer
and would encourage all those who have the space / money
to do the same
so that the shops can replenish before Christmas and have food available for those who
cannot stockpile

But if you buy now, it will be your fault if there are shortages in january.

Selfish remainers, causing the good and brave brexiters to starve.

mrslaughan · 01/12/2020 16:23

I note the guardian article referenced NZ - but didn't use any facts. It's definitely used in chicken - but I doubt uk will import chicken from NZ.... having said that - there are new laws coming into play to reduce the intensity that poultry can be farmed - so I would expect antibiotic use to drop...... there is also discussion in NZ about the general use in farming, so I wouldn't be surprised if Jacinda doesn't tighten that up (especially as they are in a loose coalition with the greens). Beef and sheep are not intensively farmed in NZ - so it's use in those meats in minimal.
Pork.... I don't really know much about - except I know there is a lot of free range pork available in NZ - abs I expect the same laws that have led to reform in the poultry industry over stocking levels, apply to pork as well.

DGRossetti · 01/12/2020 17:24
As predicted.

The Tories daren't risk our next election being in sync with the US presidentials.

They need a 2/3rds majority to overturn the FTPA. Will they get it ?

PS the Graun are just reprinting what the Economist said better last week

Fuck business

www.businessoffashion.com/news/luxury/luxury-industry-fights-to-keep-tourists-in-london-after-brexit

England’s luxury stores will have more than Christmas sales to worry about when they reopen next week. Many fear a planned tax change related to Brexit could hurt business even more than Covid-19 lockdowns.

Retailers are calling on UK Finance Minister Rishi Sunak to reverse a decision to abolish a perk for shoppers from China, the Middle East, the US and other areas outside the European Union. The system lets them reclaim the 20 percent value-added tax on purchases in the UK.

Sunak’s plan, which is expected to go into law as soon as Thursday and would take effect when the Brexit transition ends on December 31, would make Britain an outlier in Europe, according to the Association of International Retail. Rather than boosting government coffers as intended, businesses say, the move will encourage tourists to shop in Paris or Milan rather than coming to London for Burberry coats or Mulberry handbags — a change that would put jobs at risk and also hurt hotels, restaurants, theaters and other tourist sites already suffering from the pandemic.

From Twitter;

I wonder if we will consider a scotch egg to be a substantial meal once Brexit food shortages kick in?

It will be a substantial meal for four
ReturntoSpamfritters · 01/12/2020 19:12

And a pasty is not a substantial meal, which is hilarious. Does Useless have shares in a Scotch egg factory or summat?

ListeningQuietly · 01/12/2020 19:55

So a Cornish Pasty - the standard main meal of the miners - is not substantial
but a Scotch Egg - a Fortnum and Mason snack - is
Hmm

wherearemychickens · 01/12/2020 21:35

This is all quite, quite mad isn't it. Less than a month to go. Biggest change in our trading relations with our nearest trading partners in, well, ever. No clue what the rules will be. Mad.

Orban is not going to like this bit of publicity
I should not find the details nearly as funny as I do

There's a pleasing reversal of the pendulum feel to the end of 2020. Hopefully keeping a few of Boris boys awake at night.

Not quite fin de siecle but there are some interesting parallels.

borntobequiet · 01/12/2020 22:08

Scotch Eggs will surely become a rarity if Scotland gains independence. (My brain is frazzled and I have nothing sensible to say. I’ve spent too long on schools threads.)
